12 The Lincoln Star Tuesday, July 27, 1971 Yankees Alive Again After Early Problems WHAT WAS WRONG BEFORE IS RIGHT NOW NEW YORK (AP) right with the New York Yankees? Suddenly, the team that seemingly do anything right the first part of the season the team that had trouble winning half its games the team whose bullpen was tossing away games with astonishing regularity That team has righted now resembles the team that finished a surprising second in the American League East last season. A five-game winning streak and 13 victories in the last 17 games have carried the Yankees to the .500 level for the first time since May 19 and moved them to within IV 2 games of third-place Detroit. The surge resembles the 1970 second half spurt of 47-30 that gave the Yanks a final record of 93-69, their best mark since 1964, when they won a record- tying fifth consecutive pennant and their 29th most by any team in major league history. Last strong finish created illusions of strength. Yankee officials decided to maintain a pat squad over the winter.

The strategy backfired, however, and the club slipped disappointingly out of contention early in the season, dropping as far as 15V2 games behind front-running Baltimore on July 15. just say a little disappointed about the way the team got said Lee MacPhail executive vice-president and general manager, far from discouraged. Nauslar suffered burned nerve endings in his legs that prevented him from walking until January. He also developed cataracts and can see only shadows of objects out of his right eye.

He said the cataracts cannot be removed because a doctor advised him contact sports might cause the retina to detach from tfaie eye. Nauslar started working out again for a couple of hours a day last spring. The toughest part of the comeback, he said, is trying to regain his balance and quickness.
