HORRI- Mrt, Mary C. Foster, of Cool Spring Township, Cuts Her Baby's Throat Kills it Instantly, and Then Horribly Gashes Her Own Thro t. Yesterday morning at about 8 o'clock Mrs. Mary C. Foster, wife of Mr.

John E. Foster, who lives on 'Squire W. Montgomery's farm, near Fifth Creek Church, Cool Spring township, cut her 16-months-old baby boy's throat with a razor and killed him instantly. After killing the child the insane mother cut her own throat with the razor, but did not cut either jugular vein or the windpipe, though she cut deep enough to expose the windpipe. Sh is not fatally cut.

Dr. J. E. McLaughlin attended her and sewed up the wound. It seems that Mrs.

Foster was alone in the room ith her youngest child, and that her mother-in-law, old Mrs. Foster, was in the kitchen churning. The old lady heard a noise in the house and started into the house, when she met her daughter in-law at the door with a razor in her hand and her throat cut. The old lady called out, "Drop that razor," and the insane woman dropped the razor, when the old lady grabbed it. Old Mrs.

Foster went into the house aud found the lifeless form of the child propped up against a trunk with his throat cut from ear to ear. The old lady then gave the alarm to the neighbors, when 'Squire Montgomery, Mr. Foster and several others arrived on the scene. When her husband arrived Mrs. Foster begged him twice to kill her so that they "eould all go together.

Her husband asked her why she committed her horrible deeds, and the woman said that her mother-in-law told her to do it. All know this to be a hallucination of the crazy woman's brain, as the mother-in-law is a good woman and much respected iu her neighborhood. Mrs. Mary Foster is undoubtedly insane. She became insane a month ago, and application was about to De made to have her admitted to the State Hospital at31organton, when she became better.

Since then she seemed better until last Thursday night, when she again showed wild symptoms, which yielded to talks from her husband. Her husband thought her as well as usual when he went to his work yesterday morning, but she doubtless suffered a sudden attack of ard suicidal mania and Hie convenient razor prompted her to her horrible deed. As the citizens of the neighborhood are entirely satisfied that the child was killed by his mother and that the mother is insane, it was felt that an inquest was unnecessary and the coroner was not notified. Clerk Hartuess will issue a warrant for Mrs. Foster's arrest as soon as she is able to be moved, and, if she is found to be insane (as she will be) an effort will be made to have her admitted to the State Hospital at Morganton.

If she cannot be admitted at once, she will be placed in jail, as it is dangerous for her to be left at home. Mrs, Foster is about 35 years old, and has two living children, both girls, aged about 4 and 6 years, respectively, They were not in the room when she killed the baby. Her husband is a poor man, but an hon est, upright citizen who has the re spect of his neighbors. He is almost crazed from grief over his misfortunes, and has the sympathy and assistance of his neighbors. We are informed that no special rates will be given to Charlotte on the 20th.
