PAMPA DAILY NEWS 13 I'ampa. Texas 69th Year Thursday, April 10, 1975 Amarillo Relays Begins 26th Stint At Noon Today HV At II SI MS 1L! f'll By PAUL SIMS AMARILLO Pampa, with more depth than other Panhandle teams, and El Paso Irvin, with speedy sprinters and a super half miler, are co favorites to capture the team championship of the 26th Amarillo Relays Track Meet, which begins a two day run today in Dick Bivins Stadium. Pampa has never won the team championship but has a good shot this year, already owning three track titles. The Harvesters won champioaships in meets at Pampa, Perryton, and Dumas this year. Irvin, which should win the mile relay and fare evenly with also strong Wichita Falls Rider in the sprint relay and 220.

could also win its first championship in history. Competition began at 12 noon today with the field event finals and running event preliminaries. The meet will resume at 1 p.m. Saturday with the running event finals. Today's six low finals.

Today's finishers will qualify for Saturday's finals. Pampa must have several points in the field events to stay close to Irvin. The Harvesters will enter Willis Price in both high and long jumps and Garland McPherson in the pole vault who are capable of placing high. Weight men Frankie Lemons, Graig Hill and Joe Graves could also give Pampa points in shot put and discus. Irvin likely will win the half mile Saturday with consistent Manny Mendoza, who has the fastest pre meet time of all entrants 1:56.6 Pampa's Noel Hansen ran 1:59.5.

his season best, in the North Plains Relays Saturday at Dumas, and has a shot at winning the 880. Irvin sprinters Lydell Morrison and Robert Edwards have run 22.3 and 22.6, respectively, in the 220. Rider's Chuck Humphrey and Steve Dawson are 22.1 and 22.6 sprinters. Pampa's top entrant in the 100and 220 will beDavidCaldwell. Pampa has the meet favorite in the intermediate hurdles Howie Lewis, who ran a 39.3 at Lewis also has a 14.6 clocking in the 120 high hurdles and is the favorite in that event.

Tascosa and Amarillo, neither of which has run up to potential this season, could also make runs at the title. Pampa. however, has beaten both teams in meets this season. In fact, the Harvesters have won championships over every 3 AAAAteam. "We've had three of the best practices we've ever had this past week; three excellent practices.

Our times improved and our attitude toward working was tremendous," Pampa coach Scott Dunnam said. I think they're all wanting to do well. GOLF Large division schools, including Pampa, started at 9 a.m. today at Amarillo Country Club in the Amarillo Relays Golf Tournament. After today's 18 holes, the low 16 teams and ties will make the cut and return and return Saturday.

Nichols In Front By 1 Over Jack AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPI) -The way Jack Nicklaus is playing this Masters, you get the feeling he's merely biding his time. Lee Elder monopolized the limelight by becoming the first black to play in this tournament and Bobby Nichols quietly grabbed the first-round lead by shooting a 67 in Thursday's rain. But the man everybody had better start watching is Nicklaus. Favored to win the Masters for an unprecedented fifth time, Nicklaus is just one stroke back and the way he played the opning round he created the feeling he was just coasting.

"Any time you have 36 putts and shoot a 68 on Augusta National, that's a good round of golf," said Nicklaus. "I played more conservatively than I had planned. I didn't have that many opportunities to get birdies. I played cautiously because it was so wet out there." Nichols went into today's second 'round with a one-stroke margin over both Nicklaus and surprising Allen Miller. Arnold Palmer, the Masters other four- time champ, was another stroke back along with J.

C. Snead and Tom Weiskopf. That's pretty fast company. Nicklaus was a winner his two previous outings (Doral and Game Postponed Pampa's district baseball game against Borger, set for 4 p.m. today at Optimist Park, has been postponed due to wet grounds.

The game will be played, weather permitting, at 4 p.m. Monday at Optimist Park. Both teams are 0 2 and need a win to stay close to the leaders in 3 AAAA. Caprock (2-0) hosts Tascosa (2-0) and Amarillo High (11) visits Palo Duro (1 -1) in games today. Heritage); Snead is this year's San Diego champ; and Weiskopf, second three times in the past six Masters, won last week at Greensboro.

Nichols, who will be 39 next Monday, has won only one major title in 16 years on the tour, the 1964 PGA, and admits he started "playing it safe" Thursday when he found himself at 5 under par after 15 holes. Elder is seven strokes back after shooting a first-round 74, but doesn't seem to mind. "That's super for me," he said. Billy Casper, the 1970 Masters champ, is three strokes back along with Tom Watson and Bob Murphy. And the seven-man group at 1-under 71 of the 76 starters broke par the first day Lee Trevino and wondrous Sam Snead, the three-time Masters winner who will be 63 years old next month.

Thursday's weather was wet and foggy but the golfers didn't complain. BORGER Although Tascosa is favored in boys singles, Pampa has the strength to capture its first district tennis title in history here today as the six 3 AAAA teams hold their annual tournament to determine who qualifies for regional. Pampa has a decided disadvantage in girls singles, owning little depth. However Stacy Douglass, who qualified for the Division semifinals of the Amrillo Relays last weekend, has a good shot of finishing high in the Division of the district meet. Co favorites in girls singles are Tascosa, Amarillo High and Borger.

Tascosa, with No. 1 and 2 seeds in boys singles, is picked to win the boys division. Alan Alpar is ranked first in singles, while Bobby Hall is second. In doubles. Amarillo High's Jim Montoya and Ben Ballingee are No.

1 seeded. Pampa's best bet at winning an individual title is Eugene Laycock in singles. Laycock plays the winner of the match between Caprock's Greg Taylor and Palo Duro's Jeff Graham. Second seeded in doubles are Marty Hands and Jim Ferrell of Tascosa. Pampa's top entrants in doubles are Jerry Allen and E.B.

Ellis who play Caprock's Leroy McMurtry and Tim Wyble. The Harvester duo beat that team in the Amarillo Relays. In girls singles, Elise Richardson of Amarillo High should have little trouble winning the championship, although Borger's Diane Jack is capable. The two are ranked first and second, respectively. In doubles, tascosa's Sharon Satterwhite and Elixis Hefley are No.

1 seeded. Pampa, in doubles, will enter Karen Hampton and Donna Coufal. They play Tascosa's Armanda Ham and Lynn Rogers. Others to play for Pampa are Doug Hughes in singles, Armando Mesa in singles and Wayne Williams and Frank Stowers in doubles. Girls entered include Maria Martinez and Gena Cox in singles and two doubles teams Cathy Carpenter Anne Henderson and Ginger Richardson Connie Jones.

Matches began this morning and will continue through the afternooa All matches are at Borger High School. Semifinals and finals will be held Saturday. Halfback Bubba Bean returned to practice after missing Wednesday's session, but halfback Ronnie Hubby was still on the sideline.

The defense continued its heavy contact work. Defensive tackle Jimmy Dean missed the workout with a sore leg. At Lubbock, Texas Tech worked out in 40 degree weather. "Everybody seemed like they wanted to get something done today," coach Steve Sloan said. "I would term it a good practice and the players seemed to enjoy the cool weather." The Arkansas Razorbacks went through a brisk workout Thursday with the defease dominating the scrimmage section of the practice.

The coaches singled out junior linebacker Johnnie Meadors and senior nose guard Mike Campbell for their defensive efforts during the drill. The offense was paced by the passing of Mike Kirkland and the running of Rolland Fuchs. DONNA girls singles 3rd Straight Reds Tip Los Angeles UPI Sports Writer Clay Carroll isn't the sort of fellow who likes to rub it in but, let's face it, he did.

And so the Cincinnati Reds emerged laughing from their season opening three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday night when Carroll was the winning pitcher in a 7-6 victory. It was the Reds' third straight victory over the Dodgers and reminded the Los Angeles club that the Reds, too, have a star relief pitcher. The Reds contended throughout the winter that Carroll merited comparison with Iron Man relief ace Mike Marshall of the Dodgers, the National League's Cy Young Award winner in 1974. Carroll's 7 appearances and 12-5 record were modest alongside Marshall's 106 appearances and 1512 mark but the Reds insisted their native of Clanton. was a star, too.

The Dodgers aren't likely to argue the least today. Carroll shut out the Dodgers with one hit in the last three innings Thursday night and received credit for the victory Iwhen Tony Perez' eighth-inning double drove in Pete Rose with the winning run. Carroll appeared in all three games of the series, allowing two hits and no runs in 5 2-3 innings Marshall appeared in iwo games of the series and was the losing pitcher when tagged for two runs in the ninth inning of Wednesday night's second game. George Foster's second homer of the game set the stage for the Reds' triumph, tying the score at 6-6. Perez' game-winning hit was his first hit of the season and tagged Charlie Hough with the loss.

NBA By United Press International The Washington Bullets picked an inopportune time to suffer a rare loss at home, a 113-102 defeat at the hands of the Buffalo Braves in the first game of the best of seven playoff series. But the BulleLs can't be blamed solely. Bob McAdoo the Most Valuable Player in the National Basketball Association, scored 35 points pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked five shots for the Braves. "We forced them to shoot quickly and we blocked shots," said Braves Coach Jack Ramsay. "We filled the lanes and ran our fast break well.

When we do all those things, we're playing our game." In other playoff games, Detroit won, 122-106, win over Seattle to even their series at 1- Girl Linksters 1 and New York beat Houston, 106-96. McAdoo hit 16-of-28 shots and it was his 19 first-half points that kept the Braves within four, 56-52, at the half. Phil Chenier led the Bullets with 23 points while McAdoo was holding Elvin Hayes to 20 points. Knicks 106 Rockets 96: Jim Barnett replaced Earl Monroe in the second quarter after Houston had pulled to within three "points and hit for nine points as New York built an 18-point lead and then held to win. Walt Frazier led the Knicks with 26 points and Rudy Tomjanovich was high man for the Rockets with 22.

Pistons 122, Sonics 106: George Trapp scored 24 points and hauled down 14 rebounds Thursday night as Detroit beat Seattle to avenge a 90-77 loss Tuesday night. The Pistons hit 16 of their first 22 shots and took a 33-24 first- quarter lead.
