Page 4 8A The Kansas City Star Sunday June 6 1982 Sparks: Zany humor an inch deep By Tim McGraw contributing reviewer Kirk-Stieff silverplated toasting goblets Gala gifting in the traditional vein toasting goblets for the bride and groom Slender stems graceful shapes And of course fine silver plate by Kirk'sief 3995 dog The group has recently released its 11th LP Angst in my Pants but there is little hope Sparks will garner the large number of followers it has in Europe Sparks played a few of the songs from that album including the opener "Sextown and the totally inane For the many cultists who were loudly requesting their favorite songs however the group stuck mainly to older material One outstanding piece Hour seemed influenced by such British bands as the Move and Mr vocals stood out even when he did a Beach Boys imitation Guitarist Bob Haag had some fine breaks but they were sparse giving way mostly to overladen wall of Los Angeles-based band's brand of pop is an acquired taste Russ vocals seem to be the outstanding feature of the band and are heavily influenced by Bryan Ferry Though the group attempts to copy Roxy Music and some other arty pop bands the music is more shallow Consider the lyrics of can dance like Sherlock HolmesI can sing like Sherlock HolmesBut I can 't be Sherlock The music may seem pointless but it was all in fun ana the fans ate it up Mr brother Ron performed the first encore in a wig and white wedding dress Later wearing overalls and a typically deadpan expression he mimed the words to a commercial by Bob Hope and lip-synched Sonny and "I Got You with the help of a stuffed Spark Russel Mael vocals Ron Mael organ Bob Haag guitar Jim Goodman keyboards Les Bohem bass David Ken drick drums Presented by Parody Hall How can anyone take this band seriously?
