I TUB NORTH STATE PRESS. Having Rented the Washing- 1 1 NEW MARKET. PTaVIXO completed our NEW MARKET Pitt County Letter. (Correspondence of The Observer. 29, '78.

Meesrs Editor? Evercince our return from the Fair, it has been our purpose to write a shortjletter for the Observer the popular paper of our county. The Fair was undoubtedly a grand but the State Guard, iu our was the grand feature ot the Fair and without them it would no doubt be almost void of interest. Aud their conduct while in Raleigh such as to merit the approval of every one, there being but very little drinking or disorder among them "Camp Anderson" its discipline. The Democrats of the, nation hope to see this quarrel effectual ly and finally healed before another general election. It is tune there was an end of this setting up of personal authority and cross purposes.

Let the people the voters of the party nominate their candidates in Nw York as they do everywhere else, and then vote for them in solid phalanx. In, Pennsylvania, ihe Djnncrats fought under more favorable conditions and of the result it can ouly be said, the triumph is Cameron's own. lie bought it and paid for it, as his father 7. 1 "WASHINGTON. C. TUKSDAY; NOVEMBER 12. 1878. j1 MAJORITIES, i i. FIRT DItRICT.

From information received from vari us sources we luake the following tabulated statement, which we thiuk is cor- feet i Yeatea. Martin. 268 COO Beaufort, Bertie, Camden. Chowan, Currituck, i)are, Gates, Hertford, Hjde, 150 400 305 20O 10G 01 170 140 Martin, Pamlico, 4 Pasquotank, Perquimans, Pitt, Tjrrell, Washington', Totals, 420 160 124 250 350 1840 1894 THE RESULT. The great political battle of 1878 has bfecn fought and every inch of the ground-lias been stubbornly contested.

That the result has not been such as to fil us with rejoicing, none will deny. yVhavMB not swept the country as ire Lad bdped, yet we have gained a substantial in -retaining our own, nd hive, beyond peradventure, control i1 of both branches of the National Legis This was the bone of conten-. tipn. jmiucataieiy arter tue adjourn- ment of the' last Congress It twasgj ven OUt froni tbc'Radical th-at tbeicontml of the next House must pass fnto the hands of our antagonists: They confidently claimed that this end could and would be accomplished and now that the struggle is over, though the returns come in meager, and in many instances conflicting, yet enough can be lifted from the multiplicity of rumors to forever put an end to the Radical hopes in this direction. Now, as the smoke from the battle field lifts and is wafted away, we find, at this writing, that the Democrats have gained 8 members of Congress and lost 12, making, a nett loss of 4.

Thus: the Radicals gain in Illinois 2, in Massaphusetts 1, in Mi- i 5jiS. and ioiSi. In VWVZZtt 'State, we are filled with genuine sor row i and regret over the defeat of the knightly and chivalrous Waddell invthe Third District. The defeat of this cul- tured and courtly gentleman would, uuuvr Buy circumstances, De a matter of profound regret but our sorrow is made more poignant, when we remember that it was- compassed bjr the election of bully nd blatant braggart, Dan Russell, than whom, even in the ranks of Radicalism, there is none more unfit for the exalted 6eat of Congressman. However, for our sorrow, deep and 6tinging as it is, in the election of the glorious and gallan1 Kitchin in the Second District, we find a palliative.

This, was certainly an unlooked-for and unexpected victory. though early in the campaign we had tpld our readers his chances were far from desperate; yet the odds we're bo terribly against him, thai it seemed like hoping against hope. This is the first time in the history of the Second District, that it has had a Democrat to represent it, and wise has acted in her selection of a the Djstrict representa- tive, for, among the brave, the chivalrous and the just, no name shines with a brighter lustre than does that of W. II Kitchin. He has been our choice among "all the candidates in the State first, last, and all the In this our own the first District we feel measurably sure of the election1 of honest Jesse Yeates though the vote was very light and-the returns, come in fragmentary, yet enough is positively known officially and otherwise to justify us in confidently claiming 4iis election.

Elsewhere will be found a tabulated statement made from the best and most "reliable sources. So the delegation from this State will staud as in the nast 7 -Democrats to 1 Radical. When we take everything into consideration the desperation of our political foes for they were fighting for life itself we are well satisfied with the result of the struggle of last Tuesday. We have the assured control of both the Senate and. House, and so can put a period to the extravagances and peculations of the Radicals, and have an unobstructed road opened to economy nd reform.

The onlyjAinr that now can stand between the people and promised relief, is the veto of the great living Fraud, Rutherford B. Hayes, while he himself trembljes in, the balance. A Democratic President in 1880j, under any and all circumstances, is assured We congratiu. upon the bright bow of promise that is spanning and encompassing them. dawn of brighter and happier days is upon that will sOon burst into the- broad day of prosperity.

Be steadfast in your allegiance to the old party yet a little while1, and ye shall reap if you faiut not. LIGHT LITERATURE. always1 been a mystery to. us, why it is, that Washington, with its proverbially refined intelligence andtaste has never properly appreciated supported land sustained a first class; book store. There is no town in the Stale, that surpasses Washington in the! general education of its citizens.

Our people arc pre-eminently a reading people, and yet, we have never had iu our recollection a good number one book store; this does not' speak well for us abroad, and should be remedied at the earliest practicable moment. Another thing has at times sorely puzzled us Why it is that moralists or those- who pretend to be as a class condem the practice of novel reading, as hurtful. Will the mo.it fastidious critic please. point us to one line of an immoral nature, that ever fell from the facund pen of Scott? Will-he please show us one sentence, that could not be read before the most fastidious woman in the land? If chaste lauguage, elegant word paintini, beautiful ideas, and magnificent scenic descriptions are hurt ful, then discard the Waverly series. What town is there pray in which, we do not meet an Uriah Ilecp or a Wilkins Micawber Where is the man.

Who has not assisted him. as the night drew on, in placing his candle in the window; as a beacon to guide the erring one heme again Who has not met upon the streets the pompous Mr. Domby, the dapper Si-aon and the sprightly Dolly.Varden? Who has never met a Pecksniff, or been convulsed at the follies of Sam Weller? and, who has followed the wanderings of Little Nell, weary foot prints and not bedewed her with his tears jWho her twilight musings has joiued her in in the old moss covered church, and not felt all his sy mp1 athies go out toward her? Who hts nit had his heart vjrrung by the plaintive mournings of her grandfather? Who has stood beside her little humble grave.starred with the spring violets and the dandelions, and not felt I all his better nature stirred within him But her wanderings are over," and be- neath the churchyard mold, Little Nell sleeps well; even the author of her ideal being, the incomparable Charles Dick ens, (peace to his ashes) has bowed his: adieux, and passed beyond the silent riTer to uniavel the'uiysteries of Ddwin Drood Tell us pray what is the character ol the immorality, that we find in the "Moon Stone," in the "Mysteries of Mary and thej 'Law and the Lady, "or in any of the writingsof Wilkie Collins? He invariably punishes vice and' rewards virtue Are we not facinated with ithe terseness of his style and fthe purity of his lani guage Are we not bewildered. with the combinations and intricacies of his plots and astounded by the abrupt sudden ness of his denouements Where can! we get a better idea of the character and history of the French, than through the writings of Victor Hugo, or Alexander Dumas? While G. P.

Where cafl we find anything more chaste or grace ful, than "Mile Wallingsford's Court or where can we get a better ideai of the manners and customs of tuj Red Man, than in the "Leather Stocking! He is an iconoclast indeed, who would tear down from his pedestal in the tetn pie of fame a Diekens, a Scott, a Bui wer, a Collins or a Cooper, and smirch his fair name with even an imputation of immorality. Is Bunyans Pilgrim's Progress immoral? Where among the vicious must ire class Christian Heidi Mrs.

That this yellow covered such as "Three String 'DareDevi Buffalo Bill' and all of Beadle dime novels are vicious in their teacht ings, and hurtful in their tendeies none will be so silly as to deny, a the man, who has them on his counter for sale, should be indicted as a vender of immoral and obscene literature. We have been led int6 this a train of thought by haying seen a catalogue of the latest publications of the 'Sea Sid Books, that have heretofore sold in bound form, at two, three anl four dollars per and therefore been beyopjd our purse, are now througlj the generosity of this pnblishing house within the reach of the most impecunii ous. WASHINGTON LETTER. From our regular Correspondent. Washington, D.C., Nov.8. '78. After a desperately fought campaign on their part, the Republicans have fail ed to wrest the National House of Rep resentatives from the Democrats, and the forty-six Congress is what your readers wdre assured it would be Democratic in both branches The ma jority in the House is about twenty, and in the Senate half many, fhe rel turn of Lord Roscoe Conkling an Don Cameron to the latter body, from NeW York and Pennsylvania, being over whelminelv assured is the share of sub stantial benefits falling to the Republi cans.

DARK I before liiiu his done "many a time and The State is, simply Cameron's plantation, the possession of which remains in the firaily after, the manner of the English law of entailment. It is today, as it has been for years, the most corrupt, commonwealth in- America. Pennsylvanians I may not relish being told this, but it is true. The unscrupulous methods and corrupt practices'of Cameron are known and acknowledged, yet opportunity arrives to rebuke them and shake off the disgrace, the hide-bound partisans and marketable classes walk, up to the polls together with a degree of shameless effrontry never witnesssd anywhere else. Open barter is made with dangerous elements, and condemned convicts are given a life reform, and "addition, division, and silence." So long as this condition of things is tolerated the Keystone State deserves no sympathy.

Cameron's disbursements in this struggle amount to tens of thousands, and are only equalled by the enormous expenditures of the Republican Campaign Comn ittee of this city. Now that the campaign is over, it is proper to contrast the general manage nient of it, and point out the wrak spots on our own side. On the part of the Republicans there hasbeen great act- tivity combined with skill and ability to say nothing of unlimited ''money resources The cash has been freely and effectively used, "where it would do the most good." The office-holders and candidates have raised large sums, while the national banks aud kiudred interests have contributed their share. With none of these resources to draw upon, the Democratic Committees have had almost no money at all. But worse than that there has been a fatal lack of energy and proper direction It seems to be the fault of nearly all campaigns on our part, that we lack in organized intelligence, -so to speak.

There is abilf Ity enouizh-in theTJe mocrat'ie party, but a seeming want of that alertness and cuteneps which does therirht thin at the critical moment a Irek of that systematic thoroughness which knows, too, when and where the rub is to be. This is not written with a view of upbraiding any particular committee or persons, but in gbneral terms it is noticable that when the fight narrows down to a con test of brass and "wit the Republicans m6sly The Tildn campaign of 1876, was the best conducted in many, years, on the Democratic side, and the blunders that lost the presidency were all made after the votes had been cast and the battle Won. In the present campaign another point in contrast is the conduct of the leading Democratic and Republican newspapers. The Republican papers have been active and The with some exceptions, apathetic; even indifferent. In New York two of the Democratic papers have supported Republican candidates for Congress and a combination ticket against regular Democratic nom-ineesX Correspondents representing Republican newspapers have done an im mense amount of work which cannot fail to be effective.

The correspondent of the Democratic papers on the other hand have not been invited or encour aged in any efforts they may have made in that direction. To the honor of the country press it has mostly done its duty weU4 Taking all these things into consid eration, the Democracy is to be congratulated that it has held its own in this contest. Had the House been lost the probability of. a Democratic President two years. hence, would have been very materially weakened.

Before that time it is to be hoped that all differences will be and that" the party will go into the with its bid-time zal and determination. Under these conditions success is assured. The Radical claim of victory this time is simply ridiculous. It would rpquire a microscope of great power to discover any aggregate "gain" in their favor. They would seem to be tickled because the Democrats have not annihilated them wholly and carried a two-thirds majority of Congress; which would probably have been done but for the reasons re-fered to above.

Now, although this result docs not fill fthe full of our, hopes or anticipationsyet it is full of goodly pro- mise for the future. The backbone of Radicalism is broken, and they are pow-firlee's for evil, and.

po" more can the farce, of 8 to 7 be re-enacted. That the fullness of. our hopes was not realized on last Tuesday, may be attributed'to the apathy of the people, which apathy is one of the fruits of the Presidential steal; for, how often do we hear men 4 CI1 tis ollJ t0 vote cannofc "have our men, even if we elect them." The gain of one in Nevada is of the first importance, for with that State arrWd on the Democratic side', we have a jna- jority of States; so, in the event of the people failings to elect a President in 1880, under the unit rule ot the lyon-gtitition, the Democrats, having a majority of the States, would win the Pre-t sidency. We jare, therefore, prepared on' all sides for any emergency. If there is any cause for repinings ind.desp0nd.encyfc jt: surely belongs in the Itadical camp.

They were the ones that were bent upon wresting from us the control of the House. That they have been most sadly failed in their; endeavors, is an as-Ysured fact, and to them belongs the re- gretand chagrin attondah upon failure The most unpleasant phase of the recent elections is, that the States that fcave cast their lots with the Radical party, cast 213 electoral votes, enough to elect the President, with 28 votes to spare! Among these, however, is New York, which was split most terribly in a family feud between Tammany and anti-Tammany, and. also New Jersey and Connecticut, which can easily be won back to the Democracy in a fair, 5 square, stand up fightj. Insignificant as was the Greenback I 'yJ vet it was prolific of, evil to the i It caused us the loss of aha in two" Congressmen in xmuuw, TVfifthusetts. and one in NewJfsey.
