the celebrated Black Cap Raspberry which bears his name having been asked by the Horticultural Society of Lawrence Kansas what is the best soil for rftSpherfy plantation arid what are the best kinds answered as follows: With the query comes an answer obtained from Mr Doolittle who says ''A light sandy sott that never had a particle of manure and was so light that it had never been fully sodded over with grass was selected and produced the best results" And further he added that he would never manure highly uor subsoil for this crop" Now what is to be said The question is already answered by one authority Iu its native habitat the Black Cap Raspberry is often found in light and gravelly and stony soils on hill-sides and even on cliffs The red raspberry is found in stony places in mountainous regions and both these native species are obserVed to be thrifty and to bear abundantly in such situations but they are also found to do still better in heavy and rich soils on lower and moister grounds Under high cultivation and with heavy manuring the sands of New Jersey have been made to yield most abundant crops of these fruits but on poorly farmed and arid sandy thin soils the crops are not found to be remunerative Therefore our Kansas friends are advised to prepare for the droughts of their region by deep cultivation ot their ceil -which is rich enough without manure they are urged to adopt careful and thorough cultivation of their plantations and where convenient to use heavy mulching even with coarse manure or corn-stalks in the future years of their raspberry patches With regard to the sod the recommendations do not accord with those quoted above but a rather heavy and retentive but mellow and sandy loam would be preferred to sand unless that was so nnder-laid by a stratum of water that abundant moisture could be brought up by the capillarity of this material As to varieties the following may safely be planted: Black Caps For abundant yield ad Kindred Evils growing out of these Complaints and Buggy Stolen The Murderers not Arrested From the St Paul Pioneer- 1st Mr Charles Grant who arrived yesterday from Pembina has furnished us with the particulars of the murder of the celebrated Indian chief "Hole-in-the-Day" It appears that Mr Grant who was coming down from the Eed Eiver settlement and Pembina met the chief near Crow Wing This was about 12 o'clock Saturday The two parties had some conversation together in the course of which the chief informed Mr Grant that he was glad to meet hirh that he was making arrangements to go down to Washington and that he would be happy to avail himself of Mr Grant's company as far as St Paul Mr Grant agreed to accompanyhim and having some business to attend to parted with him the chief proceeding in the opposite direction At the time that Mr Grant met him there was an Indian of Hole-in-the-Day's band in the buggy with him From the accounts furnished to us it appears that they had proceeded but a short distance from the place where Mr Grant had encountered them when three Indians belonging to the Leech Lake Pillagers jumped out from a clump of trees where they had been hiding and fired three shots at the unfortunate man each shot taking effect and killing him almost instantly At the moment of the attack the Indian in the buggy jumped out and making his way into the woods succeeded in effecting his escape It appears that the Indians nad previously visited Hole-in-the-Day's house and pillaged it of all the arms they could find They then left and on the road met the chief and killed him with his own weapons The place where the deed was committed was on the Gull Lake river between Crow Wing and the Agency After the murder they cut his body with knives and threw it into the road where it was found a short time after by Mr Charles A Rufiee and Mr Aspinwall The savages drove the horse and buggy off in their retreat The greatest excitement prevails in that section of country and every exertion is being made to arrest the perpetrators There are various reports prevailing up there as to the cause of the murder some saying that it was effected by relatives of his to 36000 men in the standing army Prince Napoleon was in Constantinople on the 3d and athed with the Hultan The Viceroy of Egypt atJ all ambassadors of foreign powers were present There was a spirited debate in the French Corps Legislatif on the 4th on the policy of the government Jules Favre attacked that policy with his accustomed energy orchard would make any tree look commonplace An acre of Norway spruce or sugar maple planted twenty-five feet apart would look as formal as any apple orchard These suggestions are worthy of attention by those who would unite profit with ornament FOWXS IN OBCHAKDS It appears that some of our farmers have obtained a double advantage in keeping fowls and we might say triple for while they are made healthy and productive they are kept from mischief and made the means of destroying myriads of insects The plan is to build a picket fence around the orchard five or six feet high and keep the hens in the enclosure They are put in early in the spring and kept there till cold weather comes in the fall having of course a house conveniently situated for protection nights and during storms By this method of keeping fowls all the annoyance they usually make at garden time is averted and they are kept at little cost obtaining most of thetime sufficient food to support themselves and of just the sort to make them lay profusely But perhaps the greatest profit obtained from this mode of keeping fowls arises from the myriads of worms and insects destroyed that are injurious to the trees and fruit and this alone is enough to pay any farmer for the extra trouble or expense made from using the picket fence in place of any other A CONSUMPTIVE COUGH are men of note and of such standing that most be believed ticed that they had vacated the stands and suddenly and mysteriously disappeared The game played yesterday is much played in the South by whites Indians and negroes and is called racquette There are equal number of players on each side each man armed with two sticks about three feet long with spoon-shaped ends between which they catch tha baU On each side of the field is placed a post 16 or 20 feet high on which is a small flag one red and the other blue the colors adopted by the players When game is called the ball is thrown up in the center of the field by the umpire and then there is a struggle among the players each one trying to catch it in his racquette and hurl it against the post of the adverse party the side succeeding in hitting the post of the opposite side 12 times being declared the victors The game yesterday was won by the Chickasaws the score standing 12 to 9 The players enter of his present wife who has been confined but a few days of a child who would it is probable have succeeded to all the
