Wednesday, September 1, 1976 The Daily Tar Heel 9 Skip Foreman New seats boon or bust for Carmichael? WAS' It iMKWC.Vwivrfvi It Basketball fans in the ACC offer, without a doubt, the largest variety of behavior imaginable, except perhaps for Central Prison or Dix Center. They are also the most loyal. Basketball fans in the conference would easily give up the relative warmth of their dormitory room for a sleeping bag on a winter night to see their favorite teams. Meanwhile, their alumni counterparts are offered the opportunity, for a fee determined by their social standing, of keeping high and dry, while the postal service delivers their seats. The fans of Carmichael Auditorium are mostly knowledgeable, extremely partisan and terribly cramped.

But the cramps are about to end. Or at least it seems that way. The old wooden seats which were the luxury spots of Carmichael are being removed. They are being replaced with bleacher seats similar to those in Kenan Stadium. The conversion to the bleachers will allow nearly 1 ,000 more people to attend Carolina basketball games.

Will the new seating affect Carolina basketball? Depending on whom you ask, the degree of effect varies from a minor change in appearance to affecting the actual recruiting of future talent William Farmer, a senior from Rocky Mount, feels that seating shouldn't make much of a difference. "I don't think that 900 more seats is going to bring any names here that weren't coming in the first place. "Carmichael is a relatively beautiful place. The addition of the seats shouldn't detract from the beauty," Farmer said. He said that one problem that will arise will be the immense heat generated by the increased attendance.

Farmer also noted that the seating situation could "create better friendship or more animosity between students and alumni" due to the heated battle between the students who have to strain and hustle for their tickets and the elite who don't. "It's not necessarily the appearance, but the people that count. The thing is getting more people inside safely and with more comfort," Farmer said. Another basketball observer is R. V.

Hight, who has worked for the basketball office for the past two years. He sees the effect as short term and detrimental. He thinks that the potential recruit who was ready to choose Carolina as his school is going to change his mind after one look inside the auditorium. "The wooden seats made Carmichael look much larger. Even though it holds more, I think kids would start turning down Carolina, simply because of the small size of the gym." "We can see that Duke's gym (Cameron Indoor Stadium) has hurt their recruiting.

1 believe it was Bill Foster that said something about Duke's gym needing renovation soon, or they were really going to be hurting." The Sanford senior also noted that many of Carolina's home games are being played either in Greensboro or Charlotte and that iil.iunimiii HtsjfWifel imii j. nim in u.i i in .1 .1 111, 11 1 .11.1 11 n. 111 mm. nui.1.1 ij fY' 1" ----r "Aiiww- in mi 1 ni 1 1 1 y- rtrmnuif irr 11 nnn -t ioSaMd It 1 I i 4. i Photos by Howard Shepherd Chapel Hill, suddenly turn his back on the place because he doesn't like the looks of Carmichael? If such big names as Louisville and Notre Dame ever make the schedule, will the Carolina student make the sacrifice, both physical and financial, to see the teams? The answers will make themselves clear this winter.

maybe the player won't want to go that extra distance to play a "home" game. The big names Louisville, Notre Dame, or UCLA will be hard to draw to Chapel Hill, thus making the students who can't get to the other sites somewhat upset. Club sports provide this outlet for sport-loving individuals. rs Club sports furnish an opportunity to compete without either intense pressure to win or the time-consuming practice of varsity athletics. Most club sports stage social events, occasionally with other schools, making the program' one of relaxation as well as competition. All but a few club sports are run through the Sports Club Council (SCC) and receive funds from Student Government. Participant fees provide the rest of the funds.

The cost of taking part varies widely among the sports. For example, the club football fee is $25, with equipment provided, while scuba divers usually have $500 worth of their own gear. In general, the longer the sport has been in operation, the lower the participation fee, according to Lynn Featherstone, club football coach and active SCC worker. He cited his own case as an example. "When we started the football club, equipment was extremely hard to come by and not really the best," he said.

"But now the varsity has recognized us as legitimate, and they give us their old equipment that otherwise would be given to high schools."
