The building is administered to by the physical education department, and any new projects would have to be spearheaded by it.

Having just replaced all the wooden seats with bleachers, it is doubtful that a new project could be undertaken for quite some time. So the outlook for future musical attractions in Chapel Hill is not too favorable. Memorial Hall, with its seating capacity under 2000, is out of the question, according to Henry, and is in need of some improvements itself. Kenan Stadium could provide the space needed, but with the vast amount of preparation needed for a big production, it too would be an impractical site. Oct. 31 in Memorial Hall. by Pete Mitchell Staff Writer Carmichael Auditorium is "Blue Heaven" only part of the time. To Carolina basketball opponents, guest speakers and musical performers who visit Carmichael, it's just plain hell. The acoustics in Carmichael have been a much talked-about item since the building's completion in 1965.

During those second-half Tar Heel rallies, the crowd noise ringing off the steel beams and dome-like ceiling must be an inspiration to the home players. But during a concert the atmosphere couldn't be more frustrating. Many performers have complained of the poor acoustics, and Stephen Stills summed up the views of all the skeptics at his Carmichael Auditorium concert last year. "It sounds like the inside of a toilet bowl in here," he said. Carmichael once was a major arena for popular music talents to show-off for a night.

But there have been fewer and fewer concerts over the last several years. Last year, Fleetwood Mac was the only notable group to appear other than Stills. So far this year, Judy Collins is the lone scheduled visitor to Carmichael Auditorium. "Actually, the acoustical situation is only a small part of the problem of getting groups to come here," explained Carolina Union Director Howard Henry. "There just isn't the interest in a small place like Carmichael for the price we can afford.

The big ones would rather go to Greensboro or Richmond or Columbia, S.C., where they can draw 15,000 people or so." And Carmichael Auditorium? It may continue to be filled with ear-deafening roars during basketball season, but it probably won't be filled with top performers. As a concert hall, Carmichael just doesn't flush. "But that's not true anymore. There are much bigger facilities around our area now for them to stop at.

They can't make much money, and we can't afford the big names here when we only have 8,000 tickets to sell for a concert." Henry did suggest some kind of acoustic remodeling, however. It is especially needed for the benefit of guest speakers and activities such as commencement ceremonies. "Maybe something like what we have in the Union meeting rooms could be used," said Henry. "It would be possible to install fiberglass acoustical panels, but at a considerable cost, of course."
