Frances Hogan. director of athletics for women, said the interest expressed by the students was the main reason for adding the tw sports.

A group of UNC coeds organized a successful softball team last spring and Hogan received a petition of over 100 names requesting a track team. She said surveys were sent to incoming freshmen asking them if they were planning to try out for a varsity sport and if so, which one. She said track and field was one of the most frequently named. Bill Cobey, UNC athletic director, said in an interview earlier this summer that his department looked at the sports offered to girls in North Carolina high schools and found the only major ones UNC didn't offer were softball and track and field. "Since 85 per cent of the girls enrolled at Chapel Hill are from North Carolina, we felt these were good choices," he said.

"Title IX also influenced the decision to add more women's sports." The two sports weren't added until spring, he said, because women's athletics weren't handled by the UNC athletic department until October 1974. The earliest any sports could have been added was last year. "We waited until this spring to add new women's sports because when we inherited the program it offered eight sports," Cobey said. "It was and is one of the finest athletic programs for women in the Southeast. "Also, everything was so up in the air then with Title IX, and we assumed an attitude of 'wait and see' because we didn't want to go off into too many directions at once.

Also, in a sense, we didn't have the money. We haven't operated in the black.for three years due to inflation. The student fee increase should help, and we're projecting a balanced budget," Cobey said. Though it was decided definitely to add the two sports in mid-April of 1976, no official announcement was made. Cobey said this was because, "we're (UNC athletic department) not looking for headlines.

We're trying to run a comprehensive athletic Texas Instruments electronic calculator TI-12QO NOW 995 program and let our actions speak louder than our words. We've never been the type to release a lot of things." Cobey said he had mentioned the addition of softball and track and field to the women's program to several alumni and civic groups he had talked to this summer. Also, he told several of the women with a high level of interest in track and field that there would be a team. No coach has been named for the softball team, but Joe Hilton will handle the track team, in addition to his duties as men's track and field coach. The organizational meeting for the team will be Tuesday, Aug.

3 1 at 7:30 p.m. in 304 Woollen Gym. Hilton plans to schedule combined meets with the men when the opposing school has both a men's and women's team. In addition to separate meets with other women's teams, Hilton also said he may be able. to take some women along when the men participate in open meets, which have events for women.

ilton said the women would work out at the same time as the men and that the basics would be the same. As far as conditioning for women goes, Hilton said the only problem would be with individuals. "It will depend on their background as to how their conditioning will be handled. Some we'll be developing. We have to do this for the guys, too." No recruiting was done for the new sports for this year because it wasn't decided until the middle of this past spring to add them.

Kathy McMillan, the long jumper from North Carolina who won a silver medal in Montreal, was approached with a scholarship offer, but she had already decided to go to Tennessee State. The women will use the present track and field facilities, but the facility for the softball team is still in the planning stages. Hogan said the area behind the administration buildings on Highway 54 and Hinton James field are possibilities. Although officials seem fairly certain about the programs though for softball and track and field, there is some confusion as to whether the addition of these two new sports brings the total number of women's sports to 10 or 11. Under men's rules, indoor and outdoor track are classified as separate sports.

If an athlete participates in the indoor season and not the outdoor season, he still has a year's eligibility left in outdoor track. But the AIAW (Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) classifies indoor and outdoor track as one sport. But for now, Cobey says the UNC athletic department prefers to think of indoor and outdoor track as two sports. Hogan also said that if enough women express an interest in cross country, the sport may be included in the program. Dorrance to take reins as UNC soccer coach Dorrance said he would try to recruit the best North Carolina players he could.

He expects the North Carolina Soccer League to be a good source of players for the team, and said he was interested in this sort of player feeding into UNC. "The caliber of the average North Carolina player is improving and catching up with the caliber of players across the nation," he said. "But we can't compete with just North Carolina players; so we'll continue to attract excellent out-of-state players." Dorrance played under Allen after transferring to St. Mary's College in Texas. He was named to the second team All-ACC his junior year and to the first team twice, once during his senior year and once during the final year of his eligibility.

In addition, he was captain of the UNC squad his final year and named to the All-South squad. In 1974, he reorganized the Chapel Hill Soccer Club and became its coach, and a year later organized the North Carolina Soccer League, a senior amateur league. The league started with 10v teams and has expanded to include 34 teams. Dorrance, who played under Allen at UNC, will take over as head coach after the 1976 season. This coming season he will serve as an assistant to Allen and will take some of Allen's ork load in that capacity. "The potential for the soccer program here at Carolina is great," Dorrance said recently. "But that is not to say that it hasn't been fulfilled. It has been, and finishing second in the ACC last year proves it." Dorrance said the UNC program has always been excellent, and is one of the best teams in the nation without a scholarship program.
