The old hard shelled beetles have been on the plants for several days and many have been taking valuable time to pick them off" by hand. This is of course helpful, but an easier and more effective way should be employed. The old beetles do no damage themselves but lay the eggs which hatch into the young soft shelled larva that are such hearty eaters.

These may very easily be destroyed by coating their food with a poisonous powder or liquid. As to which method to use will depend largely on the means at hand. For small patches where the owner has plenty of time to go over the plants several times the plants may be coated with a powder composed of one part Paris Green to fifteen parts of flour. This should be applied at the lir.t appearance of the soft shelled bugs by shaking it on the plants through a thin cloth in the morning while the plant is moist with dew. This may remain on the plants for some time though it is more than likely it will removed.

by wind or rain in a few days and another application needed if further injury is being done by the bugs. For larger plantings and for more effective results the use of a poison spray is preferable. This is made of Arsenate of Lead dissolved in t-tor at the rate of one pound of the poison to twenty gallons of water. It should be applied on a drying day by the use of a spray pump or sprinkler or may be applied by shaking an ordinary broom dipped in the solution over the plant. The spray pump is the best as it applb the solution- more evenly and economically.

The spraying has the advantage over the dusting or sprinkling in that it is more lasting and may also be used for a double purpose by adding', the Bordeaux solution to the poison solution thus prevent ing blight. i According to experiments tarried on throughout the State, spraytmr with the double solution has prt-duced gains of from 30 bushel in th eastern counties to 75 bushels in thr western counties. Besides the increase in yield the keeping quality of the potatoes has been improved. The effectiveness of the work depend-largely on thoroughness and promptness. The first application should be made at the first appearance of th bugs or by the time the plants an? from four to six inches high and repeated about two weeks apart as thrt 7:00 a.
