LOS ANGELES EVENING POSTRECORD -LOS ANGELES SATURDAY MAY 11 1935 Club Leaders Leave Luggage-Laden For State Convention at Del Monte Share Interest in Project Portias of United States to Meet In Los Angeles During July Home on the Range Joan Wilton When we think of day our thoughts invariably go back to the time when we were very young Perhaps it was down on th farm maybe back east or up north Wherever it was we are bound to think of some pet dish mother used to make for us I know why it is but most of us associate some kind of hot bread or special cookies that we used to swipe from the cooky Jar with mothers We lose track of these old-fashioned recipes and long for the blueberry muffins we used to Yet or the steaming spoon bread mother had on Sunday nights Do you remember the fong weary hours mother used to pend rolling and cutting out cookies crispy sugar cookies or spicy ginger cookies? Not many of us have time to bother with all this tedious work We can buy so many of these fine tidbits already made But now and then it is fun just to tinker with some of the old recipes We can have these good old sugar cookies without any rolling at all Made the new refrigerator way we just slice them and bake them in a jiffy Cream a half a cup of butter and wor kin a cup of sugar Then add a beaten egg 14 cups of flour 2 teaspoons of baking powder and a bit of salt A teaspoon of vanilla or lemon flavoring last of all Shape the dough into rolls 14 Inches in diameter adding more flour if necessary CHILL THEN SLICE Chill for several hours then lice and bake in a hot oven 5 or 8 minutes Sugar may be sprinkled on the cookies just before they go into the sven And I believe cookies had a plump raisin in the center didn't they? This dough will keep indefinitely in the ice box This basic recipe may be used for spice cookies by adding a dash of nutmeg cinnamon and mace Ginger cookies come out nice and crisp by eliminating the vanilla and using in its place I teaspoon of ginger and 4 teaspoon cinnamon Some southern mothers were famous for their spoon bread Before the day of tested recipes and regulated ranges spoon bread was an art If you follow this recipe you may follow in your mother's footsteps as a master of bread making 2 eggs 4 cup white Revisions Election Feature Sessions By GERTRUDE PRICE Shawls and combs of to Rumor the tiff between the California league of Women voters and the California federated clubs over differences of ideas on some phases of proposed legislation now before the state assembly concerning management of Te-hachapi institution is to be soft-pedaled at the convention SOFT-PEDAL DIFFERENCES The bone of contention is over the question of giving a board consisting of a majority of wish to lend their efforts to welfare work of a constructive type will devote the coming year to various projects suggested by the main auxiliary group Calls Loyalty Supreme Gauge of Affection Between Spouses Adversity Test Upper left Rosalind Goodrich Bates upper right Gretchen Wellman lower Judge Georgia Bullock braved a strange new wilderness Mrs Bergdoll Is doing much the same We are not concerned as to whether or not the renowned slacker is worthy of such devotion That is a personal matter between two people After Claims Moving Often Upsets Security Sense By OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON Varied Social Events To Highlight Woman Medicos Conclave all we find our dreams and their fulfillment in most peculiar places But to be true to the one in whom we believe the one whom we love no matter what he may he dr what he haa done at the least a sympathetic understanding finality of moving He became very quiet HE BEHAVES BADLY The next two days he spent with the family at a home Everyone conspired to make him happy His mother drew even brighter pictures of "the other city" and "the new and the long ride he would have on the way At first he was contrary He was restless when awake and still more restless (sleep He refused to eat and tKat worried her still more She decided that he was confused about the whole affair What could she do to explain that he would have another home very much like his last? -that was it the idea flashed By the seebnd night he had developed a slight tempera-turer so she sat on his bed and told him to hurry up and get I By HELEN WELSHIMER When a wsman loves a man he will brave fire and flood tempests for him she will scale perpendicular hills and swim fiords risk the loss of name and family and friends When a woman really loves she fights for the man most valiantly whether she sees him every day or time and distance separate them -so she see him for a long long- time We have an incident of it again Mrs Grover Cleveland Bergdoll is the wife of the man who won the reputation as the most notorious slacker in the World War He is the man without a country He return to the land for which he refused to fight He would like to have his children grow up in this land though His wife has just come to America bringing with her the four small children of her marriage to plead for her reinstatement as a free man MEASURE OF DEVOTION Grover Cleveland Bergdoll has not a country of course But he has something that is worth more He has a wife who will not fall him scorn him let him go There are few human relationships in the world which are complete Few people who love each other so much that the world is well lost for their devotion Few who stand on spiritual heights together When they do they have been-espe-cially blessed If a man and woman will not cleave together forsaking all others when one or the other is in trouble they might as well give their affection to the ragman to carry away for it worth more than the few pennies the peddler will pay No woman no man wants to bring unhappiness to the one he loves But having brought it the measure of devotion automatically must be taken CRISIS IS REAL TEST One wonders sometimes what would happen if a test should confront some of the so-called happily married couples around us who apparently live on an undisturbing monotone Would they he drawn closer together mounting taller hills of spiritual understanding? Or would they discover they do not have the love and courage to face unhappiness for eaqh other? One wonders too sometimes if maybe they have quietly met the test and climbed the bill and we (who think of them as placid) do not know that once upon a time they were very brave Mrs Bergdoll is an example of a pioneering woman who is not afraid to make a public gesture for her husband Women who came westward with their men in the half-forgotten years Groups to Install Officers separated cornmeal 4 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons melted shortening 2 cups of milk 1 tablespoon sugar Bring 14 cups of milk to the boiling point While this is heating mix the flour corn-meal salt and sugar with the rest of the milk Then add the oil and the hot milk and mix well Stir in the egg yolks then fold in the well-beaten egg whites POUR INTO DISH Pour into an oiled baking dish Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until the center is firm Serve this right in the baking dish with a spoon cherry cobbler bring back memories for some of you?
