Baha'is accept the teachings of many prophets, including Christ, Mohammed and Buddha but believe that Baha'u'llah, the prophet founder of the Baha'i Faith, has brought the revelation for this age. "Social conditions today are so different, that's why we need the divine guidance," Zohoori says. Tracey Langhorne, a Baha'i and junior biology major, says the UNC Baha'i Club discusses today's social problems in a free exchange of ideas.

"We get together to talk about a lot of different concepts that you ordinarily don't think about," Langhorne says. "The club is a resource for Baha'is as well as the rest of the campus." The club meetings, open to anyone, cover topics such as gender roles, the elimination of racism and the spiritual and practical requirements of life. While the Baha'i Faith emphasizes unity, it recognizes the importance of cultural diversity. For example, the Faith encourages cultural identity such as the decision to wear dreadlocks versus the decision to let hair grow straight. However, it holds that people conform to the larger spiritual principles, such as the equality of the sexes.

Since the Baha'i Faith involves no clergy, meetings are planned locally by Baha'is and include devotional services, study classes, discussions, social events and the observation of holy days. The Faith has its own administrative order for local, national and global guidance. Two generations later, Sarah Pereira is returning to her ancestors' home to discuss racial unity and equality. Pereira, the fifth and final speaker in the Baha'i World Peace Lecture Series, will talk on "Racial Harmony: A Prerequisite for World Peace," at the Hanes Art Center Auditorium, Saturday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the UNC Baha'i Club and Chapel Hill Baha'i community, the event is free and open to the public. Pereira will focus her lecture on the Baha'i perspective of how to conquer racism and what steps must be taken toward building a unified world. Her understanding of racism stems back only two generations in her family tree her grandparents were slaves in Raleigh's Boylan Plantation. "We (people) have been torn apart through wars caused by hatred based on artificial barriers and defenses," Pereira says. "Many have been brought up to support race, language, class and sex prejudice It's time to tear these barriers down." Now retired and living in Charlotte, Pereira received her doctorate in romance languages from Ohio State University, where she earned undergraduate Phi Beta Kappa honors in liberal arts.

She then entered an intensive study program in Portugese language and literature and Brazilian-Portugese culture at Vanderbilt and Georgetown Universities. As a Baha'i, Pereira believes the world should be looked upon as one country, all nations as one nation and all people as belonging to one race. "The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens," she says. "We are the leaves of one tree and the fruit of one branch." Globally, the Universal House of Justice serves as the supreme governing body for the Baha'i Faith, providing advice and guidance for the Baha'i world community. However, the role of the hard disk drive is becoming more significant.

"Hard drives are considered essential now," said Steve Gaddy, purchasing consultant for the Microcomputer User Service. "The people who write the programs expect hardware, because as the programs get more sophisticated in their functions, they require the capabilities of hardware." An independent world religion, the Baha'i Faith has 4.5 million followers in more than 200 countries. Its membership includes people from almost all nationalities, classes, trades and professions. More than 2,000 distinct ethnic groups are represented.

Nam varZohoori, a Baha'i and graduate student in the School of Public Health, says that while the Faith is based on principles, it offers concrete solutions to modem-day problems. "When we talk about world peace and the unity of mankind, we realize there are a lot of obstacles to overcome, barriers to address," Zohoori says. "But there are Baha'i teachings that address all our problems. We're not going around talking about ideals with nothing concrete." The basic tenet of the Faith, founded 140 years ago in Israel, is the unification of men and women of all races, religions and languages. Under this principle of unity, Baha'is follow the central themes of the oneness of God, of religion and of mankind: "Baha'is believe that religion is a progressive revelation from God," Zohoori says.

"We believe the only difference (in religions) is that they came at different times according to the needs of the people." Under progressive revelation, God reveals a divine manifestation, a prophet, for different ages in history, he says. Zohoori draws a comparison with a grade school. Like teachers, the prophets educate people according to their intellectual capacity given the time in history, he says. "Getting a computer is like learning to drive a car," Gorsuch said. "When you first started, your Dad didn't go out and buy you a Mercedes Benz. You probably started out with a low-budget model and worked your way up.

It's the same with a computer. You have to learn how to ride a bicycle before you can drive a race car."
