Murder Case to Remember Crimes BOONVILLE Ind Oct In opening the trial of William Davis charged with murdering Ollie Carroll eb 16 Prose cutor Davis requested the Jurors to watch closely for evidence showing that Davis was the leader of a band of thieves and desperadoes who had terrorized the people of Warrick County for the past five years The numerous crimes com mitted in this county were mentioned by the prosecutor who asked the Jury to consider the evidence only from the point of the Infliction of the death penalty and to make an example of Davis Governor Declines to Order Inquiry at State School Governor Marshall is convinced that the stories told recently by girls escaped from the Indiana Girls' School at Cler mont concerning ill treatment received there are untrue and that the young women whom the police captured and re turned to the school are to be classed as wholesale prevaricators Mrs John Kern a member of the board of trustees of the Institution and Dr Kenosha Ses sions the recently appointed superintend ent of the school held a conference with the Governor yesterday morning and told him of charges made by the girls of alleged 111 treatment at the Indianapolis police headquarters Mrs Kern had asked the Governor to make an investigation of the alleged bad conditions at the Girls' School but upon being told of the stories the girls were telling about the twelve to seven It is provided however that the Board of Public Works may employ an addi tional Janitor for eight months in the year The ordinance to establish a municipal garage provides for the posi tion of city mechanician at 85 a month Mayor Shank believes there are not too many Janitors at the city building and he also is strongly opposed to Hie city renting a building for a garage long as the city does not have a suit able site 1 will not be in favor ot pay ing out money for a building for a gar age" said the Mayor "I have been told that the equipment In such a building would cost at least $500 and that the right kind of a mechanician would com mand a salary of 100 a month I will veto every ordinance establishing a mu nicipal garage" LAMKIN DISCUSSES WORK Mr Shank said he also was opposed to the plan to reduce the number of em ployes in the office of the city clerk and that he would veto the ordinance If it were passed by Council James Lamkin first assistant city clerk said yesterday that if the position were abolished he probably would resign Mr Lamkin as serted that the work In the office had in creased greatly during the past two years and that each man in the office had all the work he could attend to at the present time Mayor Shank said he believed that the action of the Council Monday night meant a 9 cent park levy and a 74 cent levy lor general Owen who held mayor yesterday same opinion A Schrader of Public Works the action of the Council In ratifying the garbage contract was legal in view of an opinion given the Works Board by the legal department to the effect that the contract had not been killed by the Council when an ordinance providing either for its ratification or rejection was stricken from the files President Blum berg said he also believed
