Walton. Chairman. Secretary. CATTLE DISEASE IN WOODSON. The stockraisers of the eastern part of the State, especially of Woodson county, hare a new cause for alarm in the appearance of a contagious disease known as the 'foot and mouth disease This disease originally made its appearance in Europe, and it is said, first made it's appearance in the U.

S. in 1839. It seems to specially effect the feet and mouth of the animal. As the disease advances the hoofs rot off; frequently the entire foot dropping off. The mouth also becomes enflamed and the tongne and gums are covered with blisters and eruptions.

The disease is said to be extremely contagious and makes it's appearance in from one to four days after the animal has been exposed. So far but three herds seem to be affected in Woodson and a rigid quarantine has been established to prevent the spread of the disease. Governor Glick, Major Sims, Secretary of the State Board of Agriculture, Dr. Holcomb, Veterinary Surgeon and other gentlemen of note visited the infected district last week for the purpose of determining what means could be used for the eradication of the disease. The veterinary gives it as his opinion that the only way to deal with the case is to establish a rigid quarantine, then kill the cattle of the diseased herds and burn the carcasses.

By prompt and radical measures it Is believed the disease can be stamped out with an outlay of not more than $10,000 or S12.000. It is a matter of vital importance to the people of this section that the disease be stamped out immediately, for if it be allowed to run it will probably spread to this part of the State and cause immense damage. The neatest and most appropriate contribution to the flood sufferers which has come to our knowledge, was made by the farmers of Sedgewick county. There are 2(5 townships in Sedgewick county. The farmers of each township clubbed together and furnished a car-load of ear corn.

The railroad companies agreed to fur nish the cars free of cost. The 26 cars were loaded at Wichita and made up In one train. On the top of each car was the representation of an immense grasshopper. The cars were also marked with the names of the various townships which had contributed the grain. The gift was an appropriate return for the generosity shown by the people of the east to Kansas during the period of grasshopsers and drouth a few vears ago.

It also shows the vicissitudes of fortune then Kansas, withered by parching winds and eaten out by locusts, was driven to the verge of famine, now grown rich and strong, has enough to feed all who have suf fered by the raging waters. We are sorry to hear that some of our readers who have tried sorghum as feed are not entirely satisfied with the result of the experiment. We are eorry because we have been the spe cial advocate of this sort of sweetness and because it was the one crop which could be banked on by the residents of Barber county as being almost absolutely certain of a growth. We have built up a good deal on the hope that in sorghum would be found the solution of the feed question in Barber county. It would be sad indeed if the sorghum stalk should after all, be doomed to go down in disgrace and waste its sweetness on the desert air.

It is possible however that those who have net found sorghum satisfactory may not hare found the best method of putting it up or possibly they may not have had the best variety of cane. We still have confidence that if rrop-crly managed the sorghum will regain its reputation as a stock fattener. On the first page will be noticed an extract from the Topeka correspondent of the K. C. Journal announcing the candidacy of George D.

Orner for the position of Secretary of State. There is no man in the State whose qualifications for that position are better than George D. Orner. And there is bo one whom the boys down in this section would better like to see get there. will be a number of candidates in the field, but we believe that in spite of his out of the way location George will go into the convention with a strong following.

It is quite a while till the convention and there is no telling what may develope between now and then but it looks now as if Barber county stood as good a show of getting her man there as any of them. The Kansas editors will start on an excursion to Florida, via Memphis and 2Tew Orleans, on April 4th, to be gone tea or twelve days. however also, that they will not find here a paradise. The chances are that they will meet many discourage-ing circumstances and petty annoyances which will make them long for the flesh pots of Egypt. For instance the immigrant may find here as pure and wholesome water as ever spar kled in the sunlight or he may find that his claim is watered by a fluid which will agitate his internal economy like a cyclone.

He will find here air as balmy and sky as clear as ever spread over the orange groves of Spain and then again he will find va riations in the weather when the wind will penetrate his anatony in a way which will surprise him. In the way of insects he will perhaps see no more here than in the east but the insects are healthier, as a rule here than there. and the imigrant may be surprised at the confiding manner in which the bed bug will nestle up to him and get in his work where it will do the most good. These are small matters of course, but it is out of small circum stances that the web of life is woven. These are some of the little thorns which hedge the pathway of the man who fixes his habitation in the far west.
