it Tuetday March 3i liiei The Kansas City Times A-13 Channel 5 has first 10 pm newscast to attract 40percen of audience on television There is more money in news these days Tha commercial networks could produce a top-rated daily children's show if they wanted to It is lamentable that each does not have at least one show lor children just one hour a day when the ratings are not paramount The Independent Network News at 9:30 pm on Channel 41 averaged 5 percent of the audience in February a so-so share for the new national news service Prime-time averages on week-nights placed Channel 5 first with 32 percent followed by Channel 28 percent Channel 25 percent and Channel 41's 6 percent From last year Channel 5 gained 6 points Channel 9 lost 1 point Channel 4 was unchanged and Channel 41 lost 1 point KCPT-TV Channel 19 had 3 per-cent of the prime-time alfdience during February It sound like much compared to the high-rolling commercial stations but it is triple the amount measured for the PBS station last year Seven-day sign-on to sign-off averages place Channels 5 and 9 in a tie wijh 29 percent Channel 4 with 22 percent Channel 41 with 10 percent and Channel 19 with 2 percent KCMO-TV cracked a significant i ratings barrier with ita 10 pm news caata during the February Arbitron survey period Channel 5 became the first Kanaai City TV station in recant history to attract SO percent of the 10 pm television audience to its week-19u night newscasts It represented gains of 1 share point from January and share points from a year ago KCMO celebrated Thure-mu a day with a "life begins at 40" party for ita news staff WDAF-TV the perennial third-ranked news station at 10 pm suffered the biggest losses Channel audience share was 10 percent last month down from equal shares of 22 percent in January and 12 months earlier KMBC-TV Channel 0 held onto sec-ond place with 20 percent of the 10 pm audience It was a 5-point drop By Steve Nicely from 12 months ago but a 1-point gain over January The jury is still out on the ratings effect of Christine Craft the new Channel 8 co-anchor The lead-in audiences those tuned to the individual stations during the half hour before the 10 pm newscasts continued to show a strong influence on the size of the news audiences However the differences between ence Although still In first place it was down to 32 percent last month It ia followed by "Family Feud" on Channel 5 with a 27 share Channel 4's "Tic Tac Dough" with 16 percent and Son" on Channel 41 with 11 percent The recent decision by CBS to cut Kangaroo" to a half hour and move it from 8 am to 7 am can be traced directly to the ratings It is the only daily show on network television but CBS wants the time to allow Charles Kuralt to expand his "Morning" show to 60 minutes The captain only gets 12 percent of the audience during the hour in Kansas City More children watch "Woody at 8 am on Channel 41 and a new show at 8:30 "The Great Space Coaster" on the same station has a 22 share and has 16 Kuralt 8 percent share at 7 am even in the same ballpark with ABC's "Good Morning America" (38 percent) on Channel 6 and (23 percent) on Channel 4 Even "Underdog" and "Popeye" outacore Kuralt with an average of 22 percent of the 7 to 8 am audience The change will be effective in September when Bob Keeshan begins his 27th season on "Captain Kangaroo" the longest-running show lead-in and newscast audiences were larger In February than they were in January Channel newscast gained 2 points on tha size of ita 6:30 to 10 pm audience Channel 6 gained 1 point and Channel 4 lost 4 points The shifts are considered significant because it takes a conscious effort to switch channels from an entertainment show to a favorite newscast on different channel Most viewers simply go with the station that is already tuned in Although Channel 5 increased its dominance at 10 pm it lost some ground at 6 pm It ia still No 1 with 31 percent but it ia down from 33 percent in January and 32 percent a year ago Channel 6 which currently has the only other 6 pm newscast remained stable with a 26 share the same as a year ago and a 1 -point gain on January Channel 4'a early newscast the only one at 5 pm continued to show a loss trend It's 38 percent share is down 6 points from a year earlier The station carries a game show "Bull's Eye" at 6 pm with a respectable share of 24 percent but it will replace the game show with a second half hour of news within the next two months "PM Magazine" at 6:30 pm on Channel 9 also continues its loss trend As a new show a year ago it attracted a phenomenal 44 percent of the audi- Order Gifts Many Many Name Brand Gift Items Reduced To HU no alrvr fm 16 US Reports: Since 190 the United States Government has
