Spyros P. Skouras Famed Film Magnate Dies At Age of 78 NEW YORK (AP) Spyros P. Skouras, who rose from busboy to movie magnate, once wired a financially troubled theater owner, "No mariner ever distinguished himself on a smooth sea." One of 10 children and the son of a Greek shepherd, Skouras combined determination, optimism, energy and ambition to become the year head of 20th Century He died Monday night in his Rye, N.Y., home of an apparent heart attack. He was 78. His older brother, Charles, brought Spyros and a brother, George, to the United States in 1910.

Skouras worked days as a busboy at the Planters Hotel in St. Louis, studying accounting, commercial law, English and shorthand at night. Sometimes, he recalled, his feet were SO sore that patches of skin came off with his socks. Long days became his custom. As president of Fox, he would conduct business conferences with other executives during limousine rides from his suburban home to his office, where he would continue discussions and dictate to a secretary during a daily steambath, massage and shave.

His day ended 12 and, often, 20 hours later. Skouras and his two brothers, who propelled a $3,000 investment in a 1,200 seat nickelodeon into a string of theaters, earned sizeable fortunes from their partnership. The eight-day jamboree commenced with opening ceremonies, in which several scouts from each continent marched through the arena with his respective country's flag. Upon arriving at the 800-acre campsite, the boys pitched their gear and made ready for what they expected would be a calm stay.

The area was divided into 11 campsites; which were further divided into troops consisting of 40 individuals 36 scouts and four adult leaders. Each troop was further divided into four patrols. Donati emphasized the entire several Philippine and Japanese campsite was a compact, a adding that scouts were close to his tent. He said each day of the jamboree featured an arena show, during which several of the scouts from individual countries presented demonstrations. The Australians exhibitied their boomerang throwS ing skills, while the Koreans presented a dance routine.

The American contingent performed an Indian dance, signifying the fact they are the only nation where the Order of the Arrow exists. This is an order whose members consist of outstanding campers selected by their fellow scouts. The young scout said there were various activities which the scouts could take part in, such as swimming, boating, fishing, and archery. Typhoon Hits Camp He then made mention of typhoon Olive (known as Typhoon No. 19), which struck the campsite Aug. 5 and continued to dump rain on the area for three days and nights. The scouts were finally forced to evacuate the site for one night, but returned the next day. He stated the entire area was a sea of mud, causing many scouts to lose their shoes.

He pointed out the tents managed to survive the 60 mph winds and other equipment also escaped damage. The weather, aside from the typhoon, was hot, he said. He said that although the campsite was at the base of 12,397 foot Mt. Fuji, the top of the peak was covered by clouds the majority of the time. Although there was no snow on the top at the particular time, he said you could tell where it usually fell by the sandy color of the ground.
