King will attend the National Conference on Teacher Education and Professional Service in San Diego, June 20-25. He will also attend the annual meeting of the National- Education Association in Los Angeles from June 26 July 1 as an alternate delegate from North Carolina and as a representative of both the State and University units of the North Carolina Education Association.

NROTC Rifle Team Is 4th In The Nation The Rifle Team from the Carolina NROTC Unit placed fourth in the nation in the competition with some 52 other colleges and Universities throughout the country, according to an announcement by the Secretary of the Navy, i Only five points separated the Carolina team from the third place in the annual NROTC Rifle Matches. In individual scorers, the Tar Heel team was also among the top in the nation. Of approximately 250 individuals they placed 9 and 10 respectively With scores of 287 out of a possible 300. The highest scorer in the nation fired a 289. The sharpshooters from UNC this year were G.

R. Kwist of Springfield, and W. H. Poke of Macon, Ga. The team coach is 1st Sgt.

Thibaut, chairman of the Psychology Department, will attend a meeting of the International Congress of Scientific Psychology in Bonn, Germany, on a travel grant from the National Science Foundation. As president of Rho Chi, national pharmaceutical honor society, Dean E. A. Brecht of the School of Pharmacy will preside at the annual convention in Washington, D. C.

Matthews is studying Negro political participation. Kenan Professor of Medieval History Loren C. MacKinney is completing a catalogue of medical miniatures in medieval manuscripts under a three-year grant from the National Institute of Health.

He will travel to Russia, East Germany, Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia this summer to study medieval manuscripts. The Social Research Council of New York has awarded Dr. Robin D. S. Higham, assistant professor in history, a fellowship for research on national security policy.

Vicente Cantarino, instructor in the Department of Romance Languages, is conducting a seminar for teachers of Arabic at the University of Michigan under a National Defense Foreign Language Fellowship. While UNC students donned swimsuits and headed for the nearest beaches, the mountains or Europe following exams and graduation, their professors began a busy summer of research, conferences, conventions and lectures.

Many professors are travelling around the world to conduct research financed by special grants or awards, while others are attending conventions as officers of regional and national organizations. Dr. Laura Thompson, research associate in anthropology, is continuing investigations of the rural community in Iceland and Northwest Germany; while Prof. Arthur M. Whitehill Jr.

Dr. Joseph St. Jean assistant professor of geology, has been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to conduct research important to petroleum geologists in New York State and Europe.
