A. January went to Kansas City, Monday afternoon to visit relatives and attend the funeral of Engineers Piper and Snyder. Born: January, 16th, to Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Fowler, of Paola, a son.

Mrs. Fowler was formerly Miss Sallie Trayser, of this city. The Order of Eastern Star of this city visited that lodge in Paola Tuesday evening when the Grand Worthy Matron of Kansas made her annual visit there. J. A.

Fry, Conductor, went to Council Grove, yesterday afternoon to bring President Bush and General Manager Higgins and party into this city. T. M. McGinnis returned Sunday for a visit with his family in Los Angeles, Cal. He enjoyed fifty-two hours in a snow drift, near Syracuse, on the return trip.

Clyde Chandler and wife of Kansas City, are visiting a few days in Paola with his parents, F. M. Chandler and wife, and Mrs. Chandlers relatives in Osawatomie. Mrs.

O. T. Beeson and Mr. and Mrs. Craig went to Kansas City Monday to visit friends and relatives and attend the funeral of their friend and former neighbor, A.

D. Piper. E. G. Smith went to Kansas City Monday to assist Mrs.

Chas. Snyder in the arrangement of her husbands' funeral. Mr. Smith was Mr. Snyder's fireman at Neodesha, for a long time.

The estate of Mrs. Anna Shipley, received the amount of her insurance in the Lady Maccabees' just one week after her death. This is prompt service and the members of the order here, are proud of the record the order has established. C. B.

Rowe's barber shop was flooded Wednesday morning by a bursted water pipe. Charley has moved his shop into the room back of the State Bank where he thinks he will stay henceforth. Squirrels Nest in Stove Pipe. The other evening, Mr. and Mrs.

S. S. White who live on Lincoln ave were, puzzled and worried by noises that seemed to eminate from their stove pipe. They, like many others, who had always burned gas in their stoves, were compelled to re-inforce their heating accomodations with wood during the recent cold snap. They finally chased off the cold chills that traveled 1 promiscously over their respeclive nervous systems, chased off the notion of spooks and took down the stove pipe, When they did so, out rolled the contents of Mr.

Death of Leroy Peer. Leroy Peer died at the Samaritan hospital in Kansas City, Sunday afternoon, after a protrated illness with paralysis, aged 48 years. Funeral services were held in his memory yesterday afternoon at 2- o'clock. Interment made in Mt. Washington Cemetery.

Mr. Peer lived in Osawatom'e about ten years ago and was employed as a brakeman. He is survived by his widow, one son and one daughter, of Kansas City, his mother, Mrs. line Peer, a sister, Mrs. Minnie Peer, all of this brotherina a sister, Bumgardner, a Clarence Mrs.

Ernest Hise, a brakeman, working between this city and Coffeyville, was severely injured at LeRoy, Tuseday, when he was knockec from the top of his train by a projecting pocket of the coal chute and had his right arm broken and left hand badly mangled, necessitating the amputation of a part of that member. He lives in Coffeyvill and has a wife and two children, For several years he lived at Osawatomie. Notwithstanding the severity of the weather, a jolly sleighing party braved the elements Wednesday night of last week and drove to the spaceous the home of A. J. ney expecting mild dissipation of oysters, but had reckoned without their host, as usual, and a bounteous table loaded with roast chicken and the goodies only such a home can supply was a happy and very much appreciated surprise.

Jasper Blackmer is crippling around this week as a result of an overwhelming desire to beat the plumber out of a few shekels. He crawled under his house one day last week to fix the gas pipe and in his attempt to get out he wrench ed his back quite severely. Geo 1 I. Crocker, of Garnett, will open a garage and auto livery here about February 1st, in one of the Taylor buildings near the Missouri Pacific Depot. He will have the county agency for the Ford Car.

He is a progressive man and fully understands every detail of the automobile business. Mrs. C. A. Braun went to Kansas City, Saturday and accompanied her son, Bert home.

He was threatened with pnemonia, but it is believed at this time is well on road to recovery. He had been staying at the home of Chas Snyder and is employed in the claim department al the Missouri Pacife freight offices. Ora Tyler, an engineer out. of this city for several years, and a young man who grew from boyhood to manhood, died at St. Margaret hospital in Kansas City, Kan last.

Wednesday and was buried at Springfield, Mo. His death came after a long period of suffering. He leaves a wife, his father and one brother, Bert, formerly of this city. Miami Reublican. Harry J.

Walthall came in from Trinidad, Sunday to move his family to that city, where he has a position as conductor with the Colorado Southern. There is quite a colony of former Osawatomie people there. We recall, G. E. Moore, Mrs.

George Reese, formerly Miss Gussie Giller of this city, Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Jenkins, and now Mr.

Walthall and his family. Harry grew from boyhood to manhood and married and prospered here, and he will always regard Osawatomie as home. We dislike very much to have him leave us. Matthew Reed, one of the early settlers of Kansas died at his home in Louisburg, Tuesday. had been actively engaged in business in and around Louisburg for fifty years.

They were returning home from a trip through Texas. The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Consolidated Building and Loan Association was held Monday evening, January 15th, in the office of J. B. Remington. H.

E. Newhouse was elected director for two years and C. S. Bixby and Dr. L.

J. H. Stricklan and C. F. Merrill, of Washington, D.

C. interstate com merce inspectors, arrived in this city Tuesday to investigate the cause of the wreck at Lyndon, Kan sas, Sunday night which resulted in the death of four men and much damage to property. Much interest is manifested in the East over the investigation of the steel manufacturers, and the number of wrecks that have occured throughout the country owing to defective and improperly constructed rails. The investigation here is thought. to be a part of this wholesale investigation of the steel interests.

Hays. Mrs. W. E. Curtis returned Sunday from a six week's visit in Canadian, Texas, with her son, Roy and family.

Lester Hallock the accomodating ticket agent at the Missouri Pacifie depot has been laying off sick a few days. B. L. Sheridan, of the firm of Sheridan, Meuser and Sheridan, or Paola, was a business visitor in this city, Monday. E.
