Sentimentality abounds, and if you shed a tear, you'll hate yourself afterwards.

(At the Cardinal, shows at 1:30, 3:25, 5:20, 7:15 9:10 p.m.) BARBARELLA (nr)-Jane Fonda's sex romp succeeds where CANDY failed. Beginning with a marvelously erotic striptease in a weightless chamber, and continuing through sexual exploits with David Hemmings (who is anxious to experience the "new" lovemaking), the film is fast and funny, retaining the comicstrip Camp and not trying to become anything more serious. (At the Varsity, shows at 3:30, 5:19, 7:08 and 9:05) THE STRANGER RETURNS (nr)-Tony Anthony is a budget-priced Clint Eastwood in this Italian about every other institution or organism available for dramatization. Star-studded, but hours is a long time to sit still for anyone, much less Otto Preminger. (5) TUESDAY 9 p.m.-THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING, an NBC World Premiere movie that actually holds promise.

Though it's shortened and visually expanded, it's still genuine Bard and, as Life Magazine says, "Dazzling!" Four Oscar nominations have been awarded the film, including bids for Best Picture and Best Director (Zeffirelli). 1 V. confrontation but refuses to stars. 71 4 'YOU'RE A BIG BOY NOW WEDNESDAY I 9 p.m. -YOU'RE A BIG BOY NOW will not only prove to be the most delightful movie you've seen on TV this year, but one of your alltime favorites. Much neglected when it first appeared (in 1966), it's a wacky story of a young boy's loss of innocence in New York City. Elizabeth Romeo and Juliet are young and exciting, and supporting actors in the roles of Romeo's cohorts and Juliet's Nurse are expert. (At the Carolina through Sunday, shows at 2, 4:25,6:50 and 9:15 p.m.) IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (nr)-Last year's Oscar-winner makes yet another visit to Chapel Hill.

GREENSBORO MAYERLING (M)-The old classic is remade with Omar Sharif, Catherine Deneuve and Ava Gardner. Terence Young directed the costume drama about Austrian aristocracy and misfortunes in love therein. The reviews have been lukewarm, blaming the director for creating "no real feeling" for the era or the characters. (At Janus 1, shows at 1, 3, 5, 7 9 p.m.) THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER (nr)-Alan Arkin is Carson McCuller's deafmute hero in this sensitive story of loneliness (again!) and a group of people in a small Alabama town who try to escape. Arkin is an Oscar nominee for Best Actor, and Sondra Locke, a newcomer, won a Supporting Actress nomination for her portrayal of Mick, the tomboy with frustrated musical aspirations. (At Janus 2, shows at 2, 4, 6, 8 10 p.m.) GONE WITH THE WIND (nr) What can anyone say about this movie after thirty years? These classics are better seen than heard (about).

(At the State, snows at 1:20, 3:15 5:10, SECRET CEREMONY (R) This is not as bad as Elizabeth Taylor's and director Joseph Losey's last work. But it's almost as pretentious, and not quite as slow-moving, enlivened by the macabre performance by Mia Farrow, who's slowly becoming the demented heroine of the movies. Robert Mitchum is appropriately sinister. The plot is about mistaken identity and reincarnation, but it's not as interested as it sounds.
