Theater Avila College By Terry Teachout A Special Reviewer Cat Anderson plays high he invented some of them in fact also an old-fashioned crowdpleasing showman one of the last of a dying breed Most of all he is a superb mainstream trumpeter underrated because of his high-note reputation When all his facets are on display as they were Saturday night for the Friends of Jazz the result is an exhilarating evening of music and entertainment Because of the last-minute nature of the concert (Cat was booked because of an unexpected cancellation and the group obviously had not rehearsed) the delighted audience got an extra helping of Anderson the inviting high school students to come up and take a chorus engaging the crowd in a spirited rundown of Ba- Who'll Stop Thv BainiHi 9:15 Ba telling stories about his mentor Duke Ellington with touching devotion He even took requests ranging from Monk to Behind all the horseplay though was a brilliant jazz soloist Cat trumpet stratospherics are just part of a fluent swinging style out of Louis Armstrong by Cootie Williams Throughout a long program of standards (liberally spiced with classicEllingtonla) Anderson made his real claim to fame clear for all to hear Sharing the billing was Herman Bell a talented multi-instrumentalist whose strongest point is a bluesy down -home approach to the guitar Johnny Moore was the star of the rhythm section Saturday night his drumming was sharp witty and Imaginative Also yvel-come was Sammy perceptive backing and Garner-like solo work THE FRUIT IS RIPE 5: 15-7: 5 () BEYOND AND the hideous head changed Into a visored helmet or vice versa reptilian movements were uncannily convincing and there was a funny moment when Unferth having been swallowed whole lit a candle and started kicking the mon insides Humor was plentiful all afternoon university professor ate books and later regurgitated them in class Lobdell did a first-rate drunk routine and in his most lyrical piece played a shaman who turned himself into a gently soaring bird At another moment he was a distraught lover whose face peered out from the mouth of Pamela bizarrely androgynous costume apparently inspired by an Abner Dean cartoon DRIVE IN THEATRES PETER LOBDELL mime At Penn Valley Community College Theater By Harry Haskell Music Editor Peter Lobdell a talented and absorbing performer gave a program of solo mime Sunday afternoon sponsored by Mimewock Lobdell created the mime sequences in the Broadway production of including the restrained and symbolic blinding of the horses that was made so gorily explicit in the film version Lobdell has the ability as all good mimes do of making us see what he wants us to see But he also has a very distinctive stage presence that gives each of his characters a fresh memorable quality The title of the program suggested the unifying motif behind Lobdell varied subject mat- ter In several pieces he played more than one character usually with the aid of masks cleverly designed by himself and Jane Stein The theme of metamorphosis was nowhere as important as in some of Marcel pieces but it did allow Lobdell to display his versatility and command of theatrical illusion In and the for example impish demigod turned a woodsman into a tree Daphne-like and then chopped it down Equally fanciful was in which a happy-go-lucky fellow wounded a forest magician with dire results In Bathtub Blue-Water Bosun Lobdell played a Walter Mltty type who while TEXAS DETOUR SENIORS SWINGING CHEERLEADERS pr if WiFlSPOF ill a suer $701 KtfY 40 THE FRUIT IS RIPE
