ort. Jam, H. Barnes nd ir, 1 uiig' Bad SI oilo by Man members of the Ancient Order of Doited Workmen last night celebrated the. fourteenth anniversary of the establishment of the order on this coast. The order has been very prosperous here, and has grown with a rapidity truly marvelous a fact which was well shown by the immense crowd which as seuibled at the Oakland Theater to witness the public exercises.

There were large delegations of members from Oakland, Alameda, and Berkeley, be- sides Urge numbers of friends of the At 8 o'clock the bouse was crowded to suffocation, and while waitiagfor the exercises to begin the people amused themselves by admiring the beautiful floral emblems with which the walls were decorated. After an opening selection by the 5 band Past Supreme Master Workman William H. Jordan delivered an address of welcome. Mr. Jordan was enthusiastically received, and was frequently interrupted daring his remarks hy bursts of applause.

He spoke as follows: fellow Workmen, Ladie and Gentlemen: Fourteen years ago the Ancient Order of United Workmen made its appearance upon the Pacific coast. It was but a feeble Institution and its coming was unheralded by any loud announcement of various deeds or gilded promise. It came among lis at a cexiod in the history of our State when the social and political atmosphere was musty with discontent; when the dis- eordant mutterings oi the laboring classes were beard on every side demanding an enlarpemefit'of their rights and ordering capital to cease from its oppression; when the din and confusion of contending factions, the clash and clangor of over-loaded oratorical musketry was distracting oar people and blighting our reputation. It came among us quietly and without pretentions, asking only that it might be premised to contribute its mite to tbe elevation of common humanity and the relief distress. At that time there was no Workman lodge west of the Missouri river and the order in all America did not number more than About 9000 souls, with a fraternal his- toryof but seven years.

Thus situated.it must have been with a profound sense of loneiines that oui present Grand Recorder, H. ii. Pratt, acting under a commission from tbe Supreme Master, planted the banner of Workmenship upon these shores by organizing in the city of Oakland, California Lodge. No. 1.

Tonight the Workmen of Alameda county have met to celebrate the fourteenth anniversary of that glad event. Brother Pratt, to whose derotion and zeal we owe cur existence; is with ns, 1b form somewhat bowed by the weight of years, but his spirit and his faith in the perpetuity our Institution unabated. California lodge, No. 1, is with us, no longer a weak J. factor in an uncertain problem, but strong, numerically and financially, and with a record of good deeds that fully demon- straies the fact that the great problem of which she is and has been a factor, hag been iuuy soivea.

adoui me ieeioi mis man and of this lodge are tonight assem-bled the representatives of twenty-four lodges, with a membership of about 1700, while throughout the Slate of California the order has grown to a membership of 19.000, and upon the continent to a vast army of 227,000 souls. The Ancient Order of United Workmen Is no longer a stranger in the land. Its rood deeds and elevating influences have been felt in countless homes and by unnumbered hearts. It has encuurag, the despondent, helped the weak, and poured Into the laps of widowed mothers and orphaned children morn than In the county of Alameda alone, this great organization has dispensed in the payment of relief (or the sick, during the last fourteen 'years, more than toO.000, and to widows ana orphans the considerable sum Of 1248.000. So well devised is the machinery whereby these large sums of money have been raised, and so harmonious and equitable has been its working, that no man has felt the burden cast noon him, nor would he, if he con Id, take back a penny that he has contributed to the common geod.

To-night we rejoice in our achievements of the pest ard here in this presence and in the presence of our zealous and talented Grand Master we staud ready to pledge ourselves and the Workmen of Alameda county to astill greater activity, confidently expiesslng the assurance that when another fourteen years shall have passed we shall be able to bring into the storehouse of the older not less than two full sheaves where now we lay down but one. In the name of the Workmen of Alameda eountv I now extend to this audience a hearty welcome to our convocation. To yon. Grand Master, do we extend loyal greetings, and as in speech and song we shall express the gladness of our hearts to you, from the higher battlements of our mighty fortress, hang out the banner of our cause anew, and take courage in the devotion of your followers. To tbe citizens of Oakland we sav thrice welcome.

You have an interest in our success, and we trust that as you listen to the story of what has been here achieved by Workmenship, you may join with us in the promotion of he great cause of Charity, HopeiUnd- Protection. Again, tone and all, welcome thriee welcome. -The next number on the programme vraj a champagne sonar by a male quartet, consisting of Ben Clark, D. P. Hughes, H.

A. Kedfield, and George H. Carieton. Of course these gentlemen sang splendidly and of course tbey were encored. They sang "Integer Vitae," This was followed by Gounod's "Sing, Smile, Slnmber," which was rXeasinglv lung by Miss Eva Tewell.

Miss Tewell was also encored. Sam Booth sang two of his comic ballads and fairly captured tbe audience. Ue was called out a number of times to how bis thanks. Grand Master J. M.

Young tben de-lived an address, in which he set forth some of the advantages which accrue from membership in the order. Dr. Young said that the order was founded upon broad humanitarian principles, tbat the true brotherhood of man was its essential principle. He also told something about the growth of the organization in this btates since the founding of California Lodge, No. 1.

Miss Mary E. Ford sang "Tbe Watcher," by Adam Giebel, and in response to an encore renaered a charming ballad called "The Old Maid." Miss Bertha M. Farce, the charming elocutionist, then appeared and recited the pathetic story ot "Fiying Jim." Tbe young lady made a decided "hit" and was twice recalled by tbeaudience, piv'nK quaint version Jof "Comin' nro" tbe Kve" and James Whitcomb "Specially Jim." The young larty bas ail the charm of manner and dramatic force which go to make up an accomplished elocutionist. Miss Carrie Nortbey-Roma sang in brilliant style tbe famous cavatina fruiu Meyerbeer's opera of Robert Diabl. Ralph Arthur played i he flat obligate.

Tbe beauty of this young Yoice, and the truiy artistic work which she always ciot are so well known that it is almost nriecessarr to say that she was enthusiastically encored. She sang a wtiich was totally different from cavatina, and showed beyond a i that she possessed equal facility brilliant and for sustained music. iAt Grand Master William H. Barnes vm delivered one of bis characteristic ecbes and convulsed the audience bts numerous amusing anecdotes apt illustrations. XLe final number was "Home, Sweet uioe, song by Miss Roma, the and-1 oe joining in the chorus.

To Join the Real Estste of McAfee St Baldwin What Representative Morrow Bays. Dmlp Report. Richard P. Hammond United States Surveyor General of tbis State, President of the Board of Park Com-missioners, Vice President and acting chief executive of tbe Olympic Club, and an active member of other well snown organizations, has decided to retire from politics. The rumor that he intended to resign his Federal office and enter tbe real estate office of McAfee Baldwin reached the ears of a D.

re porter late yesterday afternoon, and last evening, after the General had conducted a very successful business meeting of the Olympic Club, the re-orter button-holed him for a few moments. "Is it true," inquired the reporter, "that you intend to resign your office of United States Surveyor General and go into the real estate business?" "I am bappy to say that it is true. Tbe business' of the real estate and auctioneer Gnu of McAlee Baldwin has grown to such magnificent proportions tbat it has become necessary for them to take in a third partner. Some time ago the firm approached me upon the subject and made the proposition. Mr.

Baldwin told me that, with tbe extension of the firm's business to such State proportions, it had become necessary to have an active partner, well acquainted with tbe topography of tbe State. He thought tbat my active duties as Surveyor-General for the last three years had amply qualified me for the position of one of the real estate triumvirate which he (Mr. Baldwin) intended to form. I told him I would tbink tbe matter over, and my present determination to resign the Federal office is the result. On and after September 1st the firm will be known as McAfee.

Baldwin Hammond. Tbe firm of McAfee Brothers originated in 1871, and subseonently became McAfee Ba'dwin. 1 do not think I could have associated myself with a more well es-tab ished or progressive firm." is quite well known tbft General Hammond has been slated for tbe nomination of Congressman irorn the Fourth District, and that his nomination for Lieutenant Governor on tbe next Democratic ticket, with Stephen M. White at tbe head, was among one of the strong possibilities. Tbe reporter therefore aked: "Does your retighatibn from the office of Surveyor General mean tbat you are out of politics "Yes." said General Hammond.

"The authorities at Washington bare ben notified. My resignation takes effect in Marcb, 1890, at tbe expiration of my four years' term. As I shall, however, after Septera ber 1st be en gaged in tbe real estate business, if I find the new field taking too much of my time I shsll retire from office earlier. "Yes, 1 am out of politics. By that I mean tbat I no longer desire to bear the responsibility of any political office, subject to the change of administrations.

But mv instinctive interest in our State and National Governments would never permit me to remain idle in political matters where I can be of servile to my friends. What I mean to say is, tbat I am not seeking any office. It's to be 'strictly business' with me hereafter. My experience as Surveyor-General has taught me that California is just awakening to ber vast possibilities and tbat tbe progress we have thus far made is but a sample of tbe great prosperity in store for tbe State, wboe every county is now rapidly filling up with" Eastern immigration." Congressman Morrow, when interviewed as to who would be Genen-1 Hammond's successor, said that be hadn't given the matter any attention. He said tbat the office of Surveyor-General under General Hammond's administration had been conducted fo satisfactorily to the authorities tt Washington tbat there was no necessity for him resigning before his term had expired.

There would not have been tbe slightest danger of removal from office. As to who would succeed him, there were several men in the State qualified for tbe position and many more who thought they were fit for it. There would therefore be no lack of applications for tbe position. He bad not yet thought of a strong candidate. On Telegraph Avenue.
