SWC News BAYLOR CLOSED out heavy work Wednesday for Saturday's annual Green-White game with the No.

1 defense and the No. 2 offense sharing the spotlight. Offensive coordinator George Kirk said his "No. 1 unit looked very bad the worst this year." The No. 1 defense held the top offensive unit to three first downs.

Tailback Billy Wiison of Houston had the best day offensively, scoring three TDs for the No. 2 unit the longest a 75-yard burst. All-Conference end Roger Goree led the No. 1 defense with cornerback Ira Dean of Houston, tackles Richard Mason of Amarillo and Joe Johnson of Bryan also drawing praise. Sherman Patton of Austin Crockett, a two year all- district performer, has signed a basketball scholarship with Bavlor.

Patton, a 6-foot-7 center, averaged 16 points a game last year. Jack Schultc. a 6-foot-7 star from Subiaco, has signed a letter of intent with Arkansas. Schulte was the first eager signed by Hog coach Lanny Van Eman this year. Glenn Walls, a widely ROiiRlit Soutli Gnrlaml tackle, sljrned a national letter of intent with S.MU Wednesday. Earlier, Walls liiul signed Rij; Eight Conference letter with Oklahoma, but changed his mind and signed (he national letter with SMC. The Mustangs also announced that fl-foot-7 Sammy Hervey of Kilgore Junior College sljrned a national letter. Pettit (Continued From Page One) three he was considering was difficult enough without cluttering it fvirVher. N'MSU, it seems, is doing a great job of selling its national basketball prominence of recent years.

Tech is hanging tough with its own salesmanship, and the race appears, at this juncture, to be neck-and-neck. The Raiders remain in the picture also on both Littleton and Reamon. But their opposition isn't so easily defined. Either may still choose one of a half-dozen schools. All three youngsters are greatly needed and greatly wanted by each school seeking their services.

That seems to be the one common ground for all recruiting, and ambiguitive art which stands paradoxically as both the salvation and damnation of college athletics. APPLYING THE FORCE New York's Thurmian Munson is forced out at third by Milwaukee's George Scott at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night. Munson tried for the base on a bunt by Steve Kline in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Yanks won the game 2-0. (AP Wirephoto) TEAM 28-8 Palmer, Cox Near LCC Win Mark On a clear day you can forever, but those type days have been few and far between for Lubbock Christian College Yet, through all the dirt and wind, the Chaps have managed- to win 28 of their 36 games this year.

However, despite such a banner year, it appears that few of the records set in 1971 which, incidently, was LCC's first year of baseball since the early 1960s will be broken. Glen Palmer and Rodney Cox are both winthin range of the team, for victories but Hal and the ERA mark seem to be the only pitching records danger, Palmer is 7-C with a 1.19 ERA and Cox is 6-3 with a 0.86 ERA. The Chaps only have 10 games remaining, so Palmer and Cox each will get three more starts. Bart Hernandez, who stands 5-1 with a 2.09 ERA, also' will get three more starts. In hitting, Lupe Perez is currently swinging along with a .403 mark and that's .003 better than the team record set by Hernandez, who had only 63 at- bats a year ago.

Henry Garza is within range of the runs scored mark 35 as he has 27. Jesse Benavidez, who also las scored 27 runs, is just 14 lits away from the record of 47. Paul Russell is 10 RBIs away from the mark he and 1 Hodie Garcia set in 1971. The Chaps need only one more win the rest of the way to set a school mark for victories as Jiey now stand 28-8 and finished 28-16 last year. However, the Chaps, who stand 15-5 in road outings and 13-3 at home, have iust four games left at home.

LCC stands in "close" ames contests decided by two or fewer runs. Plus, the Chaps have dropped only one ot nine one-run games.
