direct selling companies as the Louisiana Supreme Court upheld a Shreveport ordinance making house-to-house canvassing a misdemeanor The law forbids "solicitors peddlers hawkers itinerant merchants and transient vendors of merchandise" from "going in and upon private unless they have been "requested or invited to do so hy the owner or occupant" The law excepts sellers of mtlkl1 tee 'iM V-etahles held to supply a public need from day to day In securing a recent permanent injunction against enforcement of a similar law In EmmeUsburg I Roal RHk Hosiery Mills Ind-ianapolis also won the ruling that their representatives are not "peddlers" hence are unaffected by such statutes The Louisiana court was less eulogistic about roving representatives of any description however Frauds Are Alleged "Many frauds" it asserted "are perpetrated upon unsuspecting housewives by strange peddlers in the sale of their shodd goods and many fraudulent schemes are worked upon While the State of Louisiana licenses peddlers the Louisiana legislature granted Shreveport a new charter in 1937 This specifically gave the city the right to "regulate or suppress" peddlers as a nuisance The court seemingly confirmed the authenticity of this charter while denying that itinerant salesmen possess any common law right "No law it declared "gives a licensed peddler the right carte blanche to enter a private residence for the sale of his goods nor does the state grant him any such arbitrary or unreasonable privilege under his license" AMUSEMENTS Loew-Poli Palace Freddie Bartholomew and Mickey Rooney made
