Mine Workers president was sentenced to five years in prison and fined $130000 today for making illegal political contributions with union funds The 70-year-old Boyle suffering from a back ailment stood silent and tight-lipped as Judge Charles Richey of the US District court imposed the sentence As a condition of release pending appeal Richey ordered him to post the $130000 or a surety bond in that amount with the court The judge further ordered that the money come from own pocket and restrained him from dissipating his own assets Justice Department prosecutors would not comment on the sentence Boyle was led away by US marshals and put in the court lockup in light of order that he not be released until the $130000 is posted Actually Richey imposed two 5-year sentences on Boyle but said they could run concurrently One Richey said was for Boyle's conviction of count one of the 13-count indictment against him conspiracy to misuse union money under the LandrumXIriffin Act He also imposed a $10000 fine on that count The other 5-year sentence grew out of count 13 of the indictment under which Boyle was convicted of actually transferring $5000 in union funds to an account set up
