Lives Of Generations Reflected In Farmer's Diary By 1'AT HENRT Family News November It, MM: "A year ago Aulsey left our house for his home in Texas The first gang of wild geese that 1 have heard going south this fall passed over our house to knight." Like the instinct of wild birds to migrate, the ciar- ion call to that promised land. Texas. lured away the six children of Hardy J. Dean. Tennessee farmer.

He records this exodus, typical of his time, in a diary, a copy of which is in the Texas Tech Southwest Collection. The original diary, written in a ledger, is a keepsake of Dean's granddaughter, Mrs. Grace Sanders of Hart. His children prospered in Texas and multiplied. "Sallie, our baby," late Mrs.

Similar comments on important events such as national ejections, his weather observations, his details on family life and his recipes for home remedies furnish valuable original source material for students of that era. The diary covers the period between 1S74-1888 with several entries for each year.

The setting for the story gleaned from the diary is Chester County in West Tennessee. The cast of characters is provided by a family tree copied from Dean's Bible. Ke was bom Jan. 6, 1821. a date which he consistently enters in the diary usually preceded by a weather conunent.

And he generally adds a comment on the weather conditions of the day he was bom: '18SO-F i -nine years ago today there was quite a snow on the ground in Kentucky as I have bin informed by my parents." He faithfully remembers his wedding and anniversary. "Feb. 14, 18S3: Quite warm and raining some yesterday and today. Quite a contrast in the weather today and 40 years ago which was on Tuesday.

It hailed and snowed that evening and knight I well remember. For that was the evening about 5 o'clock that I and Jane was married." Dean signs each entry, and on the anniversaries he adds his wife's name, "Mary Jane Dean." He records his resignation as justice of the peace.

Twenty-eight voters had elected him. "No one else was run." He also marks his triumph in a lawsuit involving money he had borrowed. Calculating future dates fascinates him. He observes that Rutherford Hayes, elected President by "fraud and corruption," will be inaugurated on a Monday since in 1877, March 4 falls on Sunday. He figures subsequent inauguration day Sundays throuh the year 2221.

On the fifth Sunday in February, 1880, four of his children visit him. He writes, "It is said that there was five Sundays in February 29 years ago. Consequently I do not expect to live to see five Sundays in February anymore or to see as many of our children together wonder if any of the children will be alive to make a note when the fifth Sunday occurs again in February. 1880-1909-1938-1967." Christmas draws comment; "1879-We had a little family eggnog this morning;" "1880-A social party at our house." On holidays he counts the number of children still living with or near him. His oldest, Fannie Walker, and "hur little family" move to Texas in 1876: his only son, Aulsey, the following year.

Dean expects Aulsey home for a visit two years later and fattens up a goat to barbeque. But Aulsey delays his trip home until 18S1. This is the visit which Dean recalls in detail on Nov. 12, 1882. Aulsey helps his father "plow in wheat," tours relatives' homes and has his picture made in nearby Henderson.

Two weeks after Aulsey returns to Texas, Dean puts another daughter, Luellah Hern, and her baby, who is "quite sick," on the train for Bryan, where Aulsey meets them. In 1881 Dean writes, "Fannie, Aulsey and Luellah are all spending this Christmas if alive in Texas are widely separated as a family." On the Deans' anniversary in 1882: "None of our children at home with us tonight except Sallie, our baby." Within three years Sallie has married a neighbor boy, Thomas Priddy. "Feb. 14, 1885: We are very lonely living by ourselves and not a child living with us. H.J.

Mrs. Dean is in Henderson nursing Sallie through her first confinement. Along at home, Dean writes, "It is trully a sad thing for Parents to separate xvith Rosette-Timbale Set Males delicious dessert treats or patty shells for vegetables, creamed chicken, etc. Set of two rosette forms and two patty shell forms with double handle, for easy use.

Back at Aulsey's, the Deans pick: cotton and visit a few more weeks. They arrive home on Oct. 15.

West deals. NORTH OKJ32 AJ96 TOST EAST AQ86S 09764 A10753 SOUTH 085 The bidding: West North East South 1 NT Pass 4 Pass Pass Pass Opening lead: Ten of 4k East realized that cashing out promptly was of the essence in defending against South's four heart contract. His main problem, however, was in deciding how many tricks to try for in each suit. North's opening one no trump bid was standard. consisting of 17 high card points, protection in three suits and a high honor in the doubleton.

South was willing to gamble out a game with a semi-solid seven card suit and, since he was not interested in no trump, he proceeded directly to four hearts. West opened the ten of spades a the ace a piayed from dummy. The ace of hearts was cashed and the deuce was led to declarer's jack. When defenders followed to both rounds, the trump situation was cleared up. South led a spade next and in North's nine.

East was in with the queen, and he pased for a moment to reconstruct his opponent's holding. From South's play so far, it seemed apparent that the declarer had started with seven hearts and three spades. This left him with three cards in diamonds and clubs. If he held the ace of clubs in addition, then the contest was over, for that added up to ten tricks. In order to defeat the con- tract then, East must play his partner for the ace of clubs.

Now, if South's remaining cards were divided two and one between dis- monds and clubs, there would be a problem in guessing how to it was perfectly clear that, just as soon as declarer regained the lead, he could run enough spades to bring his trick total to ten. In an attempt to "probe for more information, East shifted to the eight of clubs. This appears to be a "top of nothing" lead and it was his objective to induce West to shift to a diamond. The fall of the spots in that suit might clarify the picture. West put up the ace of Clubs and dutifully returned the four of diamonds which was most revealing to his partner.

Since the four was presumably fourth best and the four trey and deuce were clearly in view in the dummy and his own hand, it became obvious that West had a maximum of four diamonds and South therefore held two cards in that suit. East confidently cashed the setting tricks in diamonds with the queen and ace. Observe that, if East makes the conventional lead of the king of clubs first, unless his partner overtakes with the ace, he has no chance to recover, for South ruffs the continuation and runs for cover. grandmothers of the future bridegroom.
