Mti Saturday July 3 171 THE KANSAS CITY TIMET 3A National Anthem on His Hit List mm Wk i Hp (W Stotwa vJ (a cn i it By Robert Dye A Member of The Star's Staff There are rough days ahead for Harry Jenks those 4th of July holidays again and that means playing all kinds of patriotic songs in which his listeners seem to detect the slightest error Jenks organist for the Kansas City Royals at the Municipal Stadium breezed through the Star Spangled Banner last night without a mistake before 11050 fans watched the 2-1 loss But he admits there is occasionally a slip of the finger on the keys in the harmony they might not he said if in the melody Well you just keep gqing You stop' worry more about the National Anthem when playing it than any other song because you want to make a mistake in No one doubts that he has had plenty of practice playing the national song Since Charley Finley asked him to play for the Athletics a decade ago Jenks figures he has pumped out the National Anthem more than 800 times at baseball games here And that count the -basketball games conventions political rallies rodeos and nu--merous other events at which nhe Star Spangled Banner as 1'played by Jenks has started the proceedings He has played the anthem more than any other yet it is never requested from the combos and dance bands he has played with over the years The number of times he has played it is in the thousands but he venture a guess as to how many Jenks first played the Star to which Francis Scott Key penned a message In 1814 during the bombardment of Ft McHenry near Baltimore pretty much the Jenks said play it like you sing it with the pauses at the end of each He tells the students who study piano and organ with him to stick to the original version and not add flourishes to make it sound like jazz or slow it down like a ballad hate to see it he said man to his own taste but it bothers me I think it ought to be During the Royals home stand with the Chicago White Sox Jenks will be at the keyboard at 7:30 pm tonight 1:30 pm tomorrow and 3 pm Monday for the double-header The anthem just gets played once during a double-header Jenks notes but there will be plenty of other patriotic songs included for the holiday crowds When not watching out for i a in those well-known numbers Jenks intersperses popular segments at least twice each inning as a team takes the field He adds a few notes of encouragement when the Royals get a hit but nobody plays anything when the opposing team is active also the one who plays those bugle calls for the yells and starts the simultaneous hand-clapping with a succession of staccato chords Jenks is looking forward to continuing his career as the man who has probably played the Star Spangled Banner more than anyone else in town He said with a broadening of his continual grin that he will soon be moving out of the hot organ box enclosed by plastic panels into a comfortable air-conditioned version at the Harry Truman Sport Complex Harry Jenks relaxed in the stands while the Chicago White Sox were the field in the Municipal Sta- on Smart 2800 and 3200 coatdress and shirtwaist styles Cool easy-care cottons many
