W. Harpster, Gen. Arthur St. Clair. Sbvekxxce, Aug.

SO, 18S8. Fbicxd Muxes: In tbe issue of the Chief of August 9th, I found an interesting ketch of the battle of Tippecanoe, in which memorable mention is made of the part my great-grand-father. General Arthur St. Clair, took in securing the independence of this country. Frequently have I thought that his name was forgotten, and his deeds unknown to this generation, outside of the line of descent; but in your sketch of the old man's life aad services, I wa pleased to know that there waa one west of the Mississippi, who had not forgotten him, nor waa willing te let the centennial anniversary pas without paying a just tribute of praise to his valor and patriotism in the straggle for independence end liberty of this country.

That old homestead on top of Chestnut Eidge, though rude, and without any mechanical display, environed by forest trees, with no other habitation within miles, I still love, yet it has been thirty years since I laat vie wed it. Tbe old General had tbe title so fixed that no one of his descendant who fell beir to thi tract of land could make title in fee simple, as it was heriditary property. At my fatber'a death, it fell to me, according to tbe provisions of the entailed instrument, being my father'a oldest male child. And just before the war, negotiations were pending for tbe sale of my life lease, which were closed after I enlisted; I was then unmarried, which brought the purchaser to time in connection with my contract to stop rebel bullets, no doult thinking, if not prajiog, that he would hold tbe land forever. But be was on happily surprised to find that I came through with sufficient strength to raise three boys, of whom the oldest bears the name of tbe old General, and who, after my death, will fall possessor of the old homestead.

It ha been and is yet the uncharitable fashion of tbis country to remember longer Pirk-I ps Aboat Doalphaa. Mr. O. Edwards will give a lawn party at ber residence, two miles north of Donipbaa, Saturday evening, August 25th. All are invited.

We feel that we are getting a "hot box," and run ning down, aa it were. Our readers can see this, from the meagre amount of editorial wa have been able to grind out, for the last two or three months. Wa need oiling, and winding np, so we can put in good licks, the remainder of the campaign. The very low excursion rates offered by tbe railroads to Ohio and return, on aeeount of the Grand Army Keunioa at Columbus, have set us to longing for th wooded hills and valleys. and tbe clear streams running over pebbly beds, where yon ean see tbe minnows dis port themselves, and tbe crawfish craw among the periwinkle shells, back in Ood's eountrv.

Last year, they were a little late in getting out but this year, they are in plrnty time for all to get their exhibits ready who wish to make entries. While tbe premiums are not so large aa are offered by associations who have a whole State or States to drpmd up on, they are sufficient to pay for the trouble and expense the exhibitor will be at, and it is hoped that every citizen of tbe County, this booming year for crops, will try to make an exhibit that will cause those peo ple who are forever depreciating their County ashamed of themselves. Tbe title ia fully earned and the St. Joseph Ioter-State Exposition is being recognized aa one of the permaneut institutions of this country. This year it will begin on Monday, tbe 10th day of September, and will coutiune six days.

Tbe coming exhibition will be tbe tenth annual fir of th is association, aud the directory is determined to make it the crowning one of tbe decade There will be tbe usual attractions in addition to fine racing, dplay of blooded stock, exhibit of agricultural products, ie. Tbe crops of tbe Missouri valley being assured, the display of cereals will not ouly be fine, bat tbe farmers will have "money to throw at the birds." Kansas City holds no fair this year, bence many of its patrons most come to St. Joseph to see what tbe season has produced. Look ont for the biggest crowd ever on the grounds. Doniphan Doings. Mr. Adam BreDner and lady returned home, last week, from an extended tour through the North-west, having visited and tarried for some time iu Chicago, Milwau kee, etc. Miss Nell Morse, a charming young lady of Las Animas, is a guest of Miss Kate Brenner, this week. Tom Langan is quite sick, again, having suffered a relapse of his old malady neu ralgia of the stomach, we believe the doctors call it.

Dr. Johnston, of Atchison, wa up to see him, Sunday last. Albert Waller, "formerly of Deniphan," now of Humboldt, surprised and de lighted bis many friends in this section by a brief visit, last Saturday. He came down to attend the regular meeting of Doniphan Lodge, A. F.

St A. M. Dsn. Quin has caught the prevailing epi demic "mountain fever" and talksserious- ly of migrating to Colorado, this fall. Mrs.

Quinn has been in the mountaius for sever al months past, and has written back such glowing accounts of that wonderful coun try, that Dan is "almost persuaded." The political pot simmers but feebly, as yet, in this part of the moral vineyard. But then, we of Doniphan are ao far removed from the busy world without, that we rare ly hear aught but the echo from the strife and turmoil, and see little save the dust and smoke from the distant battle. Loto-eat rs we are, creaming our lives away in peace and tranquility, "the world forgntting, and by tbe world forgot." Extensive preparations are making for the moonlight picnic at Doniphan, whieb, weath er permitting, will occur Thursday evening. Aug. 33.

The proceeds are to be nsed for the repairing of the M. E. church building. The object being a lau lable one, a li beral patrouage should be extended. The regular semi-annual announcement that Doniphan is to become a railroad town iu tbe near future, fell upon our startled ears, this week, with a "dull thud." Tbis chestnut is so old aud shop-worn, that even the worms refuse to tacklu it.

The hull is musty and the kernel withered away to naught. "And the trail of the serpent is over all." The Arcadian tranquility of our little village was rudely disturbed, last Saturday evening, by what might be termed, in sporting parlance, a "set-to," the casiti belli beiug the manner in which "Epluribus" commented upon tbe death of the lato C. U. Matbeny, in last week's Chief. Tbe language nsed by "Epluribus" waa, to say tbe least of it, uncharitable, and entirely unnecessary.

"Revile not the dead," is a Divine command. Chari should cast a mantle o'er tbe bier of our departed brother, and hide all his im perfections beneath the sod that rests above bis bosom. Strained relations bad existed between "Epluribus" and the deceased, but that "Epluribus" should carry his enmity beyond the grave, should stab the dead man in bis coffin, should add to the weight of woe already pressing heavily upon the mourning widow, startled and shocked tbis entire community. Although the life of the deceased had not been, probably, as exem plary it might have been, still, be bad many warm friends friends whom ha had endear ed to bim by bis many good qualities of bead and heart, and it was but natural that some one of them should seek to punish the traducer of bin memory. ''Epluribus" might well be likened to a blind snake be strikes at everything which touches bim, good, bad or indifferent, and bis stream of venom flows unceasingly fortunately, however, it is innocuous, being auto-antidotal.

Rev. Dugald, of Wathena. preached to a goodly congregation at the M. E. churcb iu Doniphan, last Saturday night.

Father Col man conducted the regular semi monthly services at tbe Catholic churcb, last Sabbath. Tom Flannagan sold bis farm north of town, last week. 18, 1888. Club held an open air meeting on tbe hotel lawn. A large number of visitors. both ladies and gentlemen, were present. Mr.

Lavender, of Kansas City, sang a cam paign song in a very pleasing style. The President next introduced A. W. Brewster, of White Cloud, a tbe orator of the evening. Mr.

Brewster is a fine speaker. His argument in favor of Republicanism were well weighed and unanswerable. A reference to that "most nnnatural alliance of Democrats and Prohibitionists" waa loud ly applauded. The large audience present gave him the closest attention, aad was much pleased with his splendid effort. Mr.

Lavender waa then called for. He gave aome excellent reasons for being a Re publican, and challenged any Democrat present to give reason for being a Demo crat. Of course none of them could answer. Club then adjourned Speaking again, next Saturday evening. C.

We have often cautioned our corres pondents against personalities that are lia ble to cause bard feelings. It is claimed for these trains that on account of their being connected by steel hoods all danger of telescoping in case of accident is removed, tbe train being practically one long car. It is certain that tbe oscillation of the cars is greatly reduced, and it is also certain that the vestibule trains afford the greatest com fort yet known to travelers. The adoption of this style of train by tbe Chicago, Santa Fe St California Railway between Kansas City and Chicago is a strong bid for the passenger traffic between the West and Chi cago. Tbis new road is in many particulars ahead of any of its older competitors, and will undoubtedly be the popular road to Chicago. A Throng) Nice per le Chicago.

Ian Him t3fa. SaOOS ides, 19a. IE COB Si.SOdJi TO. the slips of a man than the times he stood fast and fell not. This, to a certain extent.

was the case of General St. Clair. Tbe old hero gave the glad morning of bis life to en counter dsnger, endure hardship, and make sacrifices to keep the wolves of war from the doors of others, while he had to spend its evening in neglect and poverty, and to have the wolves of want at his own door Ob, what do fine words amount to, if they mean no more than this? General St. Clair mortgaged his entire manorial estate, consisting of thousands of acres, and loaned the money to the Conti nental Congress, to purchase supplies, and to arm and equip the Continental army, and this boon wa never repaid. And then, for the old General to pass his declining years in abject poverty, was certainly disgraceful on the part of tne Government.

I have oftimes seen it in print, aud heard it from tbe rostrum, that "Lucie Sam is a gentleman." Now, I am as proud of the stars and stripes, and love this Government as strongly as any man; but the way it treat ed General Sinclair aud his heirs. I cannot concede the compliment which tbe declara tion implies. I do not refer to early days, when the colonists were as poor as churh mice, bnt at a time when the Government was amply able to palliate the old General's condition, and wipe the tears from his eyes. Just before tbe war, lhi beirs took some steps to keep tbeir claims before Congress At that juncture, Floyd and Pillow stole money aud arms belonging to tbe Govern ment, when back went tbe surplus, for long rest. So, if you get Uncle Sam's name npon a note or bond, it is better than gold the world over.

But let bim get into your debt on verbal promise, and the most profit able thing to do with your claim, no matter how just it may be, is to sell it for fire cents on tbe dollar, if a purchaser can be found at that; if not, keep it to boast ou, that Uucle Sam owes you through the generosity of your ancestors. But, then, these vain boasts will not extend a credit, or palliate tbe verity of a Sherifl's execution, nor buy bread and clothing for tbe children. Neither will it keep one from filling a pauper's grave, which has been amply verified in -the condition and claims of the soldiers of the late war. Yours, etc. Geo.

E7 A petition ia being circulated, asking tb Rock Island Road to make an under ground crossing in front ef Lewi Zimmer- uTs place. There ia a large amount of travel on that road, and the crossing ia very dangerous. Psrhaps, wbea it first built the road, it would have made such a crossing, if they had been requested to do so, instead of every obstacle being thrown in the way of the work, and exorbitant damages being de manded by the property owners, wljich could not adjusted outside of tba Courts. t7 A perfect complexion, free from pim ple or blemish, is very rarely see because few people have perfectly pure blood. Mrs. Frances Holub, who is now keeping a restaurant at Colorado Springs, sends us a copy of the Daily Gazelle, of that place, containing an account of the arrival of the first wagon at the summit of Pike's Peak.
