It was an innocent looking apparatus, and it designated drop press." Ths uses of this press arc varioue. Among other things it is used la ths nefarious industry of the counterfeiter. This is the use to which this particular press was to be pot the manufacture of bo fire dollar piece. The cottage was rooted, about ths fourth of las present aMOthfrom Tagrgert Jt XKagee. by a yeang man who gave the nana of Joseph F.

About four or firs days ago detectives Lees and Coffee, of San Francisco, were tan ding oa the corner of Montgomery and California streets in that city. Suddenly their attention was' to the suspicious actions of a drayman and a young; man on the opposite corner of the street.

On the dray was a piece of machinery. Ths detectives inspected the apparatus. They found that it was a drop press -A the latest Improved pattern. They followed the drayman to Dram street, to Davis, to East, to the Oakland ferry. He drove oa board the ferry boat, the detective still following.

Arrived in Oakland the drayman drove up Eighth to linden, along Linden to Twelfth and thence to Jackson. He stopped in front of the modesk little cottsge at the corner of Eighth and Jackson streets. The press was taken from ths dray and carried into the basement. The young man. who had accompanied the drayman, then hurried to the train.

The detecttvee kept close upon hie trail. They boarded the same train. They followed him to a room on Montgomery street. They had found the laboratory and ths storeroom of the counterfeiter. Their PLAH OV OFKKATIOH Tor his captors was formed immediately.

Last night Chief of Police Crowley, accompanied by de tee tires eii. Meagher, and John Coffey, earns to Oakland. They mads a thorough examination of the lonely little cottage. Aa they had anticipated, ths new tenant had not moved any household effects into the premises he had rented. In the basement ef the house thfX found the drop press.

It was In position and ready for business. It is an excellent press. It is peculiarly adapted to the work for which it was" intended in ths present instance. Ths detectives, however, had no use for ths machinery at that time. They left the basement much pleased that they had had an opportunity of inspecting the press once more.

One man went on ths "lookout Hs poised himself whsrs he could observe anyone who approached the house. The others waited. Presently the signal was given. Somebody was approaching. The new tenant waa probably returning: to bis unfurnished cottage.

The detectives hid in the bashes. Ths man entered the garden. He entered stealthily. He mads no attempt to enter the house. He was probably aware that nobody was at home.

He quietly walked to the south aide of the house. He knelt down, and began to dig. Ths oil Is very soft in this part of the garden and easily disturbed. The man was not a gardener, however, although HZ OWHXD "A PLAHT." To an uninformed spectator the oc-cuDation xf this mysterious individual would have seemed inexplicable. He would have inquired, "What is this man digging np his garden for!" He would have been skill farther mystified when ths planter drew something from under his coat and placed It In ths hols which hs had excavated; also when ths man carefully covered the thins be had placed in the hole.

It might have beea the evidences of a horrid crime he was attempting to conceal. Suddenly hs lifted his bead. He stood upright. Then, with a single bound, he reached ths street. Captain Lees aad detective Meagher remained in ths Tioinity of ths little blue cottage. They were not disturbed. This morning they also returned to Saa Francises. They ware certain that they would meet the mysterious "gardener" of the aright before.

They were not mis taken. They encountered him oa the ferry-boat that left San Fr ncumai seven o'clock this morning. He was ponied by his mistress.
