Football league (1957-61) Len Dawson probably had no thoughts about winning any pro honors Such awards as player of the week and allleague were for the active participants not for bench-based quarterbacks as he was in Pittsburgh and Cleveland In his eight years away from the Dawson was deluged with more honors than he can remember The most significant of course was the most valuable player award in the Super bowl last January Yesterday the Associated Press announced that Dawson had been selected as Player of the Week for directing the Kansas City Chiefs to a 26-14 victory over San Diego last Sunday It was an honor that Dawson normally take lying down But he was stretched out By Robert Moore Auoclattf PrM Sport Writer Ten seniors and Joe Wylie of Oklahoma a sensational sophomore halfback were named yesterday to the 1970 all-Big Eight conference offensive football team of the Associated Press Every Big Eight school placed at least one player on the honor team and champion Nebraska Colorado and Kansas each had two selections Two of the three players who returned for action this season from the 1969 all-Big Eight team earned berths again They are quarterback Lynn Dickey of Kansas State and tackle Lamm Jackson of Missouri Wide receiver Mel Gray of Missouri failed to repeat Newton is regarded as a sure pro prospect Jackson the other tackle is a devastating blocker with good balance and agility Lawson at 263 pounds is the leaviest player on the offensive unit and extremely quick and fast Havig has fine speed and toughness and has been heavily scouted by the pros The defensive ends are Herb Orvis of Colorado and Mike Kuhn of Kansas State The tackles are Dave Walline of Nebraska and Ron Yankowski of Kansas State and the middle guard Ed Periard of Nebraska With Murtaugh the linebackers are Oscar Gibson of Kansas State and Steve Aycock of Okla-loma Washington Clarence Scott of Kansas State and Monty Johnson of Oklahoma are the defensive backs The defensive unit averages nearly 209 pounds Orvis and Aycock are both juniors Murtaugh had 71 tackles and 61 assisted tackles far more than any other Nebraska player Johnson is tough and fast and is able to diagnose plays in the secondary more readily because of his experience as a high school quarterback Scott proved over and over again his ability to get to the ball as fast as the receiver repeat selection speaks for itself Periard the little 5-9 middle guard got 41 tackles and was in on 29 others Twelve of his tackles lost yardage Orvis and Kuhn rank with the best defensive ends in the country Opposing coaches mapped out game plans to stay away from them as much as possible Walline had 18 tackles and 15 assists in third-ranked drive to an unbeaten season At 238 pounds he is the heaviest defending player Yankowski does everything well a good pass rusher is strong and has outstanding quickness Kansas State dominated the defensive unit with four selections Nebraska placed three Oklahoma two and Iowa State and Colorado one each The defensive team is composed of nine seniors and two juniors Both holdovers from the 1969 club repeated linebacker Jerry Murtaugh of Nebraska and defensive back Tony Washington of Iowa State The offensive backfield consists of Dickey Wylie halfback Joe Orduna of Nebraska and fullback John Riggins of Kansas Dickey who broke every Big Eight tackles Dennis Havig of Colorado and Steve Lawson of Kansas at the guards and Don Popplewell of Colorado at center Popplewell the 240-pound center from Raytown is one of the best bets for all-American Opposing coaches and play-ers constantly praised the play of Popplewell regarded as the best center in Colorado football history In 2-for-l Deal Luis Aparicio Goes to Red Sox By Joe McGuff The Star's Sports Editor Los The Boston Red Sox who have had three disappointing seasons since winning the American league pennant in 1967 yesterday made a bold move to re-establish themselves in a strong contending position by acquiring shortstop Luis Aparicio from the White Sox To obtain Aparicio the Red Sox gave up Mike Andrews their regular second baseman and Luis Alvarado who played both shortstop and third base as a rookie last year The Boston-Chicago trade came as the highlight to a second straight day of feverish trading activity most of it involving American league clubs The Baltimore Orioles the team that has everything picked up a little bit more yesterday by acquiring pitchers Pat Dobson and Tom Dukes from San Diego The Padres received pitchers Tom Phoebus Fred Beene and A1 Sever in-son and Enzo Hernandez a minor league shortstop The Mets made a deal with Atlanta giving up pitcher Ron Herbel for infielder Bob Aspromonte The Red Sox believe that by making the Aparicio trade they have established a set line-up and will be able to avoid the juggling that went on last season With Aparicio at short Rico Petrocelli will become the regular third base-man Doug Griffin a rookie acquired in October from the Angels is being given the opportunity to place second base George Scott moves back to first Yaz to Play Left Field Carl Yastrzemski who played first base through part of last season will return to left field Billy Conigliaro will be in center and Reggie Smith has agreed to move from center to right which is the most difficult of all outfield positions to play in Fenway park The big gamble the Red Sox are taking is in regard to Griffin Reports on the young second baseman are outstanding and he batted 325 last season with Hawaii of the Pacific Coast league However he has yet to prove he can play in the majors If Griffin fails to make good the Red Sox can use John Kennedy or Tom Satriano at second Aparicio is 36 and probably can be counted on as a regular for no more than two years but the Red Sox believe they are developing a replacement for him in Juan Beniquez a young minor league shortstop Aparicio batted 313 last season Griffin does the job then trading Andrews is not a Manager Eddie Kasko said is a good ball player but he got off to a bad start last year When you do that hard to make it up I think it will take a See LUIS Page 5B Kansas City-San Happy Days KU Whips Long Beach Nt Bex Score on Page 5B By Fritz Kreisler A Member of The Ster's Sports Staff Lawrence Kas Kansas poked a big hole in Long Beach shiny basketball reputation as the Jay hawks opened the season with a 69-52 victory last night before 13000 fans in Allen field house In fact for a half it looked as if the 49ers had left their eighth-ranked game back on the drawing board in California Missing their first 14 shots and handling the ball almost as badly they found themselves in an atrocious 32-8 hole at half time They managed to do somewhat better in the loosely-played second half once creeping to as close as 13 points before Kansas answered with its final burst Defense was the major item the Jayhawks because their own ball handling was far from flawless But with Brown getting in a couple of early blocks and by putting so much heat on the ball the Jayhawks were so demoralizing that the 49ers were out of the game soon after the opening tip Kansas ran off 13 straight points before the 49ers got on the board with a couple of free throws and it was 19-2 before Ratleff hit a soft jumper from the side for Long first fielder with 9:25 left in the first half With Pierre Russell leading the way Kansas ballooned its margin to 32-4 while Long The Jayhawks mentioned among the powers too rode a smothering zone defense the rebounding of Roger Brown and the scoring of Bud Stallworth and Dave Robisch Robisch the 6-foot-10 scoring star collected 18 points the 6-5 Stallworth converted to guard only a month ago led with 21 Brown also 6-10 snapped up 11 rebounds and did outstanding defensive work around the basket Top scorers for Long Beach State were Chuck Terry with 15 points and sophomore Ed Rat- leff with 14 Beach was missing its next seven shots and again Ratleff ended the drought with 1:44 remaining For the half the 49ers hit only 2-of-26 shots for 77 per cent and their eight points represented the fewest points for a half in Allen field house The next low was a 9-point half by Portland on the way to an 80-37 loss three years ago Long Beach came out pressing and shooting in the second half They were accurate enough to increase their percentage to 27 per cent but Kansas fairly consistent at 48 per cent all game was never in any real danger All that remained for the fans in the second half was to cheer and stamp their feet Kansas has another home game Saturday night against Eastern Kentucky The draggy first half was marked by several unexplained time outs which turned out to be the result of a bomb threat An anonymous caller told police that a bomb had been carried into Allen field house and was scheduled to go off at 9 University officials requested both coaches to extend the first half past that time so an unhindered search of the field house could be made Cats Start Right By Del Black A Member of The Ster's Sports Staff Manhattan Coach Jack Hartman showed up in a purple coat The Kansas State crowd
