game between Kansas State and Nebraska was only a little more than two minutes old when Jerry Murtaugh intercepted a pass thrown by Lynn Dickey and returned it 25 yards to the Wildcat 30 Johnny Rodgers ran an inside reverse on the first play from scrimmage and scored Thus began an afternoon of unrelenting horror for the Wildcats who were routed 51-13 Dickey was intercepted seven times The Wildcats gave up the ball once on a fumble and fought a losing battle against poor field position They had to start inside their own 34-yard line on 15 of their 18 possessions Nebraska led 21-7 at the half and put the decision completely out of reach with a 16-point third quarter The third-quarter touchdowns came after interceptions gave them the ball at the Kansas State 30 and again at the 12 Joe This game was an excellent demonstration of power football Only 16 passes were five in the closing moments when Kansas made a desperate attempt to pull out the victory There were only 25 yards of the first staggering blow by putting together a 56-yard touchdown march midway in the first period Riggins who scored on a 22-yard run had 34 yards on the drives but he received good support from Jerome Nelloms and an 11-yard pass from Heck to Ron Jessie Stung by the show of strength Oklahoma retaliated with a 66-yard touchdown march climaxed See Page 3S Star photos from Lawroneo Kas by John
