The man is Mario Lewis, partner and producer for the first 12 years of Ed Sullivan's CBS show. Como's first show will be Oct. 3. * * * Maybe producer Robert Saudek and NBC know something. They have specified that the series Saudek proposes to film for the network, based on material in "Profiles in Courage," a book written by President Kennedy in 1955 when he was a senator, will not be presented on the air until after the elections of 1964. * * * Another prospect for 1964-65 — they really work ahead in this business — is a one-hour filmed weekly dramatic series to be created by William Inge, Pulitzer Prize playwright. The tentative title is "All Over Town," with a cast of continuing characters representing life in a small midwest- ern community. * * * Since the new "Harry's Girls" series is being filmed abroad, mostly in France, for a fall debut on NBC, what do they do about the laugh track — use foreign laughter? Not at all. The sequences are run off for laugh- recording purposes to audiences consisting of Americans recruited through consular, Navy and other agencies in the Nice area which have Yankees at their beck and call. —Jack Gaver Carol Burnett will record an album of Jules Styne songs for Decca records. Galesburg Register-Mail, Galesburg, III., Fri., Aug. 2, 1963 TV—7 Henry Fonda Stars in Politics (Continued from page 1) when he played the title role in "The Young Mr. Lincoln." But that was a story based on historical fact and Fonda hastens to point out that "this makes quite a difference." "When you got involved with a contemporary theme, particularly if it is as explosive as the one in 'Fail Safe,' you've got to be doubly careful," said Fonda in a recent interview. "Despite its realism and message, the movie, like the book, is pure fiction, and there certainly is no attempt on my part to portray President Kennedy. "Frankly, I don't think 'Fail Safe' is about today's world — meaning 1963 — but rather a glimpse into the near future, like perhaps the early 1970's. It trjes to present a terrifying picture of what could happen if the arms race and the cold war hysteria continue." Fonda's great scene comes in the final moments of the film when, having learned via the "hot line" that the United States has inadvertently attacked the Soviet Union, he gives the okay for a similar assault on New York to prevent the situation from exploding into a global inferno. (He has learned from the Soviet premier that an attack on New York is the only way the premier can appease belligerents in the Kremlin). Is there a self • consciousness in playing the president of the United States in such a dilemma? "No, not really," said Fonda. "From an acting standpoint, it does no good to try to imagine the immense burdens and responsibilities that go with the world's most difficult job. "It is always better to simplify a situation, rather than make it more complex, and what I have tried to do is to reduce it to a as general a problem as possible, simply to portray a man with enormous responsibilities facing a trying and horrifying situation. "This recent business of playing politicians is just a coincidence. I only took the role and those other two you mentioned because they were challenging to me as an actor. "That always has been my only criterion." Pickled Tongue-Twister ST. LOUIS (AP) - When the National Pickle Packers Association picked Dill L. Pickle of Hollandale, Miss., as its "Man of the Year," the St. Louis Post-Dispatch couldn't resist pointing out that Mr. Pickle was in a strong position to challenge the legendary Mr. Piper in th tongue-twisting department. A whimsical article offered the following as a new tongue-twisting test: "The National Pickle Packers picked a man of the year, a man of the year the National Pickle Packers picked. If the National Pickle Packers picked a man of the year, Dill L. Pickle is the man the pickle pack< ers picked."
