Member of The Star's Sports Staff) Any doubt the Kansas City Chiefs may have harbored about an upset here yesterday faded in the first quarter and reappear the rest of a sunny New England afternoon The Chiefs built up a 14-0 lead midway of the first quarter and coasted to a 31-0 victory over the Boston Patriots before a gathering of 22002 fans in Boston Alumni stadium So complete was Kansas City's domination that Boston had only one mild threat That came just before the half when the Pats reached the 37 their only sojourn into hostile territory all day The whole field must have seemed hostile to the Patriots who dropped their second straight contest by a convincing margin The Sunday before they lost to Denver 35-7 The Chiefs moved to 2-0 and in two games have outscored the opposition 589 This was the first shutout for the Chiefs since the fourth game of the 1967 season when they ripped Miami 41-0 The Pats pulled a repeat in the shutout department having been blanked by Houston 16-0 in their home opener last year While the game lacked suspense it had a cast of exciting performers especially for the Chiefs Mike Garrett scored his first touchdown of the season in the first quarter on a 22-yard pass from Len Dawson Then in the second period he bounced off a linebacker and cut back to his left to score on a 4-yard run Noland Smith brought back memories of last year when scooted 64 yards up the right alley on a punt return to set up the second touchdown Otis Taylor chalked up his third touchdown of the season outlegging safety John Charles to the end zone flag to capture a 16-yard scoring pass from Dawson who apparently felt no pain from his right hand ailments Robert Holmes dented the Boston line for one yard for the wrapped up the scoring with a 16-yard field goal after adding four extra points The Chiefs score in the fourth period although they tried pass off a fake field goal from the Boston 12 I was intercepted On defense the Chiefs had a roll call of stars with Willie Lanier at middle linebacker Emmitt Thomas at right corner and Jim Lynch at right linebacker standing out noticeably Boston whose future appears as bleak as its recent past because of the stadium situation and other problems found a ray of hope in Carl Garrett a rookie running back from New Mexico Highlands Garrett who has declared himself in the race for A rookie of the year honors against 0 Simpson flashed some nifty moves especially on a 43-yard kick-off return in the sec- ond period But the defense was so stingy that Garrett gained only 21 yards in six carries and Jim Nance the powerful veteran running back mustered only 22 yards on seven attempts total offensive yardage was an even 100 Mike Garrett paced the Chiefs with 79 yards rushing and with his five pass receptions tacked on another 49 yards for a 4 the end zone again Smith caught a punt at the 20 picked up key blocks from Gene Trosch Willie Mitchell and Remi Prud-homme and headed down the right side While making a cat-back 64 yards later he was caught from behind On the first scrimmage play Dawson pitched to Taylor for a 16-yard score In the second quarter the Chiefs drove 59 yards in seven ground plays to mount a 21-0 lead Garrett outmanuevered the linebackers with a 29-yard run on a pitchout to spark the march He climaxed it on the sweep right in which he knocked linebacker Marty Schottenheimer off at the 2 and cut back to the left for the touchdown An 80-yard drive netted the Chiefs their final touchdown Gloster Richardson got a step on Larry Carwell on the sideline for a 20-yard pass gain from Dawson Two plays later Carwell pushed Richardson at the Boston 3 for a 30-yard penalty then Holmes wrapped up the final from thei Down 28-0 the Pats found things getting worse in a hurry Garrett their new hope fumbled after Aaron Brown closed the hole on him at left tackle Lynch made the recovery at the 16 The Chiefs fought off penalties to penetrate to the 5 and the 9 then in quarter-final By Tom Marshall Assistant Snorts Editor of The Star Boston The opportunity to fall on their face was there for the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday but they came away from it in grand style A 31-0 victory over Boston caused Coach Hank Stram to repeat that this edition of the Chiefs is much better than his 1966 Super bowl team Workmanlike methodical meshing of the offense and defense was a pleasing yictory Stram added Newspaper stories in Boston greeted the Chiefs when they arrived Saturday hailing Kansas City as a super team maybe the best in the world at this time The Chiefs were a 20-point favorite at game time and in some quarters a 29-point pick It was a terrific buildup for a fall But complacency and over-confidence never crept up on the Chiefs this time Too Many Memories It has happened before Jerry Mays veteran end and defensive captain admitted after the game But he added too many of the old heads had memories about other days about Jim 200-yard rushing days of Gino Cappel-letti kicking a 40-yarder in the final seconds The struggles were fresh in mind me defense was ready It took away running and forced Boston un der pressure to go to the air Stram said the Chiefs were consistently solid and had a tough approach never go into any game thinking that it's going to be he added But the chance was there this time The heat pump will heat a new home and cool it too In the summer it collects heat from the air inside and releases it outside just like an air-conditioner In the winter it reverses the process extracting heat from the air outside and releasing it inside (Compare it with the operation of your refrigerator) The heat pump creates the perfect climate indoors year-round Flamelessly Quietly Automatically And really charming it does
