Irish stopped once but a personal foul penalty gave them a second chance and they made the most of it Theismann passed 29 yards to Gatewood to put the ball half a yard from the goal and Gulyas carried it over to make Notre lead 24-7 with two minutes gone in the fourth quarter The Irish who came into the game with a 408 scoring average the best in the nation obviously hoped to raise their prestige by turning the game into a rout but even though Theismann remained in the line-up until the closing minutes Missouri refused to yield any aaditonal points Theismann had an outstanding day completing 15 of 24 passes for 209 yards He also gained 56 yards rushing Gate-wood who led the nation in pass receiving coming into the game had eight receptions for 123 yards The Tigers who have been weakened by a series of injuries gave a courageous performance They were still in the game until Notre Dame scored its final touchdown but they simply generate enough offense to keep up with the Irish Notre of The Star's Sports Staff Lawrence Kas The Nebraska Cornhuskers put a football powerhouse on display here yesterday In defeating Kansas 41-20 before a Memorial stadium crowd of 50200 the Huskers did just about everything expected of a team ranked fifth in the country They chewed up the defense with a stunning and well-balanced attack that netted 515 yards choked off Kansas completely in the second half and demonstrated the ability to come from behind As one-sided as the game became it was not that way throughout as Kansas struck for three electrifying touchdowns within a 7-minute span in the first half to turn a 10-0 deficit into a 20-10 lead At that point the Huskers perhaps showed great resiliency Faced with a rapidly-deteriorating situation they had every opportunity to fold Instead they answered in nine seconds with an 80-yard touchdown play from Van Brownson to Guy Ingles and followed up with a 73-yard touchdown drive to seize a 24-20 half-time lead In the second half they maintained control of the game by cutting off Kansas without a scoring threat until the final moments and keeping its own attack clicking at a devastating pace The leading figure in the Nebraska triumph was Brownson making his first start of the season at quarterback The 6-foot-3 junior who shared time almost equally with Jerry Tagge last year in the 2-quarterback arrangement had been shoved into the background by an injury this season and early effectiveness He was instrumental in victory over Missouri a week ago and brightened his image considerably here yesterday Proving himself an strike to Ingles he threaded a 5-yard scoring toss to Johnny Rodgers the sensational sophomore His runs were for 15 and two yards Rogers Ingles Haul in Passes Rodgers and Ingles were the major
