Tigers mashed out 421 yards rushing with an exhibition of ball control that wounded but never quite knocked desperate defenders Illustrating the dominance is this statistic: Missouri ran off 111 plays By Gib Twyman (A A'lember of The Star's Sports Staff) Columbia Mo In case anyone had forgotten this is what Missouri football is supposed to look almost There was the return to the wing-T type offense hammering at the tackles and stomping through on the power sweep the action one associates with Coach Dan Devine There was ball control no make that ball captivity so completely were the Tigers in command There was the defense that lives in a Missouri uniform It was the almost however that provided the only doubt as to what the Tigers were all about yesterday as they methodically took Colorado apart piece by piece in their Big Eight opener The almost was big enough that it could have changed the final 27-14 score Amazingly it was three breakdowns by that proud and powerful defense that almost let Colorado get an upset in edgewise Anyone worth a Tiger button knows it is the offense that almost costs football games The defense never But while that contradiction set the pace for a day of paradoxes Whatever Missouri did wrong was eventually and completely lost (Continued-on Pag 3S) Bob Anderson the quarterback who went into the game as the Big total offense leader Colorado got the ball with 11:39 left in the game on it 20 after Henry Brown missed a Missouri field-goal attempt from the 25 On first down Anderson faded to pass Monte Huber the right end who was split out broke into the open at midfield But just as Anderson launched his throw Wallace tackled him The ball popped into the air short of its target Davis intercepted on the Colorado 42 and returned to the 36 From there the Tigers got the put-away touchdown in nine plays This was an important drive for more reasons than the obvious This could be the 3-minute period in which Terry McMillan grew up as a quarterback Radford jr Oregon State Falls By One To Kentucky the first 50 minutes The breaks fell to the Huskers first then to Kansas as the score went from 6-0 to 6-2 to 9-6 to 13-9 Then the Jayhawks who would have been forgiven by their fans if they had only fought off the powerful Huskers for the rest of their game drove goalward with quarterback Bobby Douglass putting together an almost perfect 14-play 73-yard drive that jumped the Jayhawks back in command this time to stay Rodgers thought about that drive after the game and said was what you might call a physical He called the shot perfectly defenders were up to the challenge with end John Zook and Hicks teaming to stop the bid Kansas proceeded to salt away its first victory here since 1961 by traveling 27 yards in seven (Continued on Soldiers in olive drab uniforms with rifles at their sides ringed the Olympic stadium yesterday but inside the dove of peace symbol of this Olympiad withstood the threat of being supplanted by the bayonet The Olympics opened precisely on schedule and without incident the only shots heard were from a battery of ceremonial howitzers Athletes from the world over marched around the stadium to the applause of 80000 spectators and then took their positions in the middle of the infield President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz of Mexico declared the games open in a brief speech Forty thousand colored balloons were released and soared off into a partly cloudy sky The Olympic flag was raised Enriqueta Basilio of Mexico carried the Olympic torch into the stadium and lit the Olympic flame to the cheers of her countrymen The 10000 pigeons were released circled the stadium to gain altitude and climbed swiftly away the ceremonies came to a close proud Mexicans chanted Mehico! The self-congratulatory mood of the Mexicans is understandable The troubles that have beset this Olympics are without precedent First there were objections to the altitude Then it was said the construction of facilities was hopelessly behind schedule The threat of a boycott by several nations including Russia developed when a decision was made to admit South Africa The decision was later rescinded Then Mexico City was hit by student riots virtually on the eve of the Olympics The thought was given to calling off the Olympics But finally it was decided to go on Yesterday the day of days arrived The pageantry and color of the opening ceremony unfolded slowly and movingly Mexico had proved herself before the eyes of the world Greek Delegation Leads Long Procession THE START OF the ceremony featured the release of the five Olympic rings made of light inflated plastic They were colored red green yellow blue and black There was a stirring at one end of the stadium as the Greek delegation appeared and began to move briskly around the track Thereafter the various nations followed in alphabetical order except for the Mexicans who came last The Australians marched by the women clad in yellow suits and the men weering green coats and white pants The Bermuda delegation was what Bermuda shorts The Bulgarians wore drab gray suits The color suggested a close out sale at Sing Sing The first prolonged cheering was heard when the Czechoslovakians walked on to the track The fans stood and cheered as the Czechs walked by and many waved handkerchiefs The applanse spread from section to section as the Czechs passed The Czech men attired in blue suits and white straw hats lifted their hats and waved to the spectators as they walked The cheering reached its peak as the Czechs passed in front of President Diaz The United which is Estados Unidos in Spanish and therefore well up in the alphabetical came on the track just as the Czechs were leaving The delegation received a warm but unspectacular welcome If anything the Russians were greeted a little more warmly than the Americans But the Russians had to use (Continued on Pago 2S) Blazers Look Sharp As Blues
