Monty Python and the Holy Grail 1:00 6:15 2:45 8-00 4:30 945 OOOOOOoooi saOOOOOl An annual miracle is what Ingeborg Heuser who has single-handedly made El Paso a ballet-loving town manages to do with a tiny company of semi-trained dancers Her which opened last night at Magoffin Auditorium has become a local tradition to which the faithful flock each Christmas in high expectation Ably supported by an energetic Ballet Guild the University Civic Ballet never fails to provide a colorful musical entertaining evening This season is no exception although Miss Heuser has wept bitter tears over the fact that dancers like athletes graduate and go away leaving great spaces where their strength used to be FORTUNATELY one of the best remains Andree Harper is noteworthy for her loyalty to the town and the company for she is a magnificent dancer who mi easily find a place in a larger sphere Her arabesques are pure elegance her line is flawless and she brings excitement to everything she dances Watching her with Michael Stammer in the Divertissement from I felt the surge of pleasure which comes with recognition of art is of course an excuse for a series of divertissements or short feature dances intended to show individual prowess It is consequently a problem for a young group only just developing its skills Miss Heuser choreographed Act I with complete understanding of her needs with new surprises for the audience as she does each year and with such a strong sense of the historic Victorian family Christmas party that only Charles Dickens managed to be more in sentimental mood The opening scenes families walking in the snow parents trimming the tree children peeping in through a door which descended and stuck alas halfway guests arriving and the whole magic of gift-giving even to Santa Claus this left most of us breathless and four years old again The effect was a Christmas card come to life TANYA BARRIENTOS as Clara became a graceful little girl who was given a magic nutcracker by her friend did Dr Drosselmeyer whose gifts were all exciting They included dancing dolls wound up by key and set in jerky action very realistically Jill Jacobs and Quin Baird arrived in big doll boxes and emerged mechanically to the delight of children on the stage and in the audience Mr Baird was a favorite throughout the eveningHe is a capable acrobatic dancer who spins in mid-air effortlessly and all alone danced the Wild Ivan dance of Act Two with more fire than the usual three Cossacks I am glad he soloed it for he would have been hard to match The guest artists were attractive but not exceptional Both Alexis Hoff and her partner Fleming Halby are well-trained dancers Miss Hoff has line and grace but whether because supports were uncertain or because these artists are unsuited to each movements the duets of their Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier were stilted and lacking in finesse Each did better as a soloist A YOUNG DANCER to watch is slender fstida Hernandez who carries excitement onstage with her and has unusual purity of line Not yet quite ready for the taxing Snow Queen she was excellent as Marzipan Shepherd in partnership with pretty Jill Jacobs Michael Stammer in each of his appearances supported well and moved with authority It is impossible to name the entire company The Waltz of the Snowflakes was particularly a White Ballet in the old tradition and the battle of mice and toy soldiers was fun The Spanish dance was lively and Mother Ginger and her children were as usual as ftuuy as the Littlest Angel were touching Costumes by Miss Heuser and Rosa Barrientos were richly beautiful Bert scenery lighted imaginatively by Robin Quarm was exactly as it ohnyid be and of course the Ballet Orchestra- under the baton of Laurence Gibson accompanied well A daniw himself in his little spare time Maestro Gibson loves and understands the special needs of ballet His tempi never falter nor do they intrude He makes happiest score sparkle as it should It plays at 8 pm tonight 2:30 pm tomorrow and next Sunday aooeeeeeeeeaeeeeeeeaeeaaeeeeeeeeeai mm SHIM Montwood 2 Now Showing 592-8106 HELD OVEIti STATE 106 SAN ANTONIO 533-7032 Positively Last 8 Days Pofor Cushing David Ploasonco SSSt mSS aOOOOOl iGeI STARTLING NEW MOTION PICTURE FOOTA MfeOFTHE ELUSIVE CREATURE The LEGEND Of BEGFXMJT Si Now Showing RSjhaaaimjhsJ momwooa 3 6:10009140 THE PALACE ms arm aanaimiTtiau net ca it lama CHI TB nmn FH TITUS 5331522.
