Star) COLUMBIA MO The best summation of spring football game is that it must have been more fun to play than it was to watch The Tigers (Black and Gold teams) wait at each other with obvious enthusiasm but the true lovers of football were the 500 or so fans who huddled bleakly under an assortment of golf umbrellas while rain that varied from showers to a downpour chilled them First Units First 19-6 For the record the Black team won 19-6 This was as it should have in any kind of weather The Black squad was composed of at least the best 22 Missouri players If there was a bright spot it was the play of quarterback Gary Kombrink He displayed poise and confidence throughout something he lacked during the middle stages of last season Kombrink completed 5-of-8 passes for 59 yards He scored the first touchdown on a 4-yard keep and the third on an excellent 45jyard run Another sign of good things for the Tigers next season was the performance of the Black offensive line The standout was Mike Wempe the sturdy tackle Wempe Where Action Is Wempe caught the eye of the fans something unusual for an offensive tackle He wore a white helmet only because it was the only one that seemed to fit If you watched the white helmet toe ball carrier arrived at that spot more than 50 per cent of the time Early in the game toe Black unit used Russell Washington at the other offensive tackle When Washington and Wempe lined np side-by-side in an unbalanced alignment the blocking effect was sure and potent Whether it was the weather the blocking of the Black line straight ahead or something hidden in toe rain and gloom it was noticeable that the Black team made great use of toe straight dive play Repeatedly Black backs squirted through for gains of more than five yards Most successful and durable was Bill Powell the Black fullback who gained 76 yards in 23 carries He scored the middle for the winning squad on a one-yard smash in the second period Lischner Looks Strong Too Powell took over midway blocking through last season after a series of backs failed to fill the gap left when Barry Lischner was injured in the Illinois game Lischner his knee repaired by surgery in toe off-season was the starter for the Gold team He also played well gaining 23 hard yards in nine slashes at the powerful Black defensive line When toe Blacks were forced to give np the ball the panting chores fell into the capable hands of Steve Kenemore the sophomore halfback from Summit Kenemore averaged 48 yards on four attempts booming in succession spirals of 44 48 58 and 60 yards For those who care for figures the way the scoring The Black got its first on a 54-yard push in the second quarter Kombrink scored from the 4 on the 11th play of the drive The big play was a 17-yard gain by Larry Moore on a deep pitch from Kombrink Chris extra-point attempt hit the upright and bounded wide Then wifo 1:35 to play in the half Powell scored to cap a 67-yard 14-play drive Twice Kombrink hit halfback Greg Cook with passes back to the opposite side from which he rolled The first gained 12 yards the second was good for 15 The Black went for the 2-point conversion made it but a clip set it back to the 23 From there Flynn missed toe point Block Fake Spring Kombrink Kombrink made it an 16-0 game on the sixth play of the second half His 46-yard run was aided by a fine block from Moore and his own nifty move that faked off the linebacker Flynn kicked the point The Gold drove 62 yards for its on its next possession The score came on a 19-yard pass from Garnett Phelps to halfback Bill Schmitz who made a well-timed diving catch on the goal line That was it From then on the most important item was the time left The rain fell by the bucketful and the temperature just fell Getting frostbite at a football game may not be unusu al but it is when it happens in May By the time it ended there were more players in sight than ans The Missouri official statis-ician estimated the crowd at then he added might be a little BLACK GOLD First downs 14 9 Yards rushing 231 99 Yards passing IS 42 Passas 6-11 4-22 nteroaptions by 1 0 Punts 4-48 7-372 Fumtlse lost 4 2 ird penalized 55 40 ACK the tour since the Masters At one point yesterday he was 11 under Casper had a 2-over 73 the first day partly accountable to a e-stroke penalty assessed when he lost a ball that hit a tree limb at the edge of the ninth fairway He followed with a 68 Friday Behind Palmer and Casper were Frank Beard at 207 and Harold Henning and Dan Sikes at 209 Bunched in a 5-way tie for sixth at 210 are Kermit boles both on short one only 18 inches and the other 2 feet George Archer winner of this Greensboro Open got caught in a threesome with Hogan and Palmer He started out 4-under four strokes off the
