SUNDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 21, 1030. THE PAMPA SUNDAY NEWS-POST PAGE THREE Here they are, Santa Clans, the scores of letters you asked the News-Post to keep for you. Every letter that was legible has been prepared for publication, and those missives which do not appear today will be published early this week. And be sure to notice, Santa, how generous the children are this year, and how many of them have told you to divide their toys with' the poor boys and girls. The pupils of the Woodrow Wilson school wrote many of the letters that follow, but dozens of others came through the mail.

The News-Post is sure that Santa Clans Avill be glad to have the information in the letters that appear below: IS THERE A SANTA CLAUS? nuts. NORMA JEAN McKINNEY. One September day In 1897. a queer letter came to the editorial of the old New York Sun. It was a nimplc query from a little girl who quite obviously had experienced the chfll ol disillusionment in in Santa Claus, and wished the matter settled finally, positively.

The letter was turned over to Frances Pharccllus Church to answer. "And Church," says a contemporary, "bristled and pooh-poohed but lie took the letter and turned with MI air of resignation to his desk." He did not know that, thirty years hence, hir, name would be remembered only for the reply he dashed off. Church, we learn, was; born in Rochester, New York, on February 22, 1939. He was graduated with honors from Columbia College in 1859. His study of law was soon discontinued, however, for he realized his life could be fulfilled only by writing.

So, he wrote. He died April 11, 1900, and the following day readers of The Sun were informed that the reply to Virginia O'Hiuilon's letter which they had grown to love, was from his pen. Perhaps no 'newspaper article has been reprinted so many times as has classic of sentiment. Fathers nnd mothers the world over have come to look for it every Christmas season, and boys and girls, who now listen to it, will doubtless some day be reading it to their children. It is a part of the literature of the race.

Here it is, just as it unostentatiously appeared in The Sun, September hi, 1897: REMEMBERS ORPHANS Dear Santa I am not going; to ask you for much. I want a doll with curly hair, and a bicycle for my brother and me, together. Santa Clans, do not forget tho little orphans, and make nil the poor children happy. "We take pleasure in answering at once and thus prominently the comniuniciiticii below, expressing at the same time our gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun: Dear am 8 years old.

Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? VIRGINIA O'HANLON. 115 West Ninety-first Street. "Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been atfccted by the skepticism of a skeptical age.

They do not believe e.xcepti they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or little children's are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole truth and knowledge. "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

Ho exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your lite its highest beauty and joy. how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as. if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We shculd have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight.

The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. "Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch. Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coining down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can sec. Did you ever see fairies dancing 1 on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they arc not there.

Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there unseen and unseeable in the world. "You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is) a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? jAh, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. "No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever.

A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the hearts childhood." RECORDS IN BACK Dear Santa Clans. I want a doll that you can put records in her back and she talks. Put the pedal on my tricycle will you please? I want you to dress up Mary Lou too. Don't forget the poor children. Love from, DOROTHY ANN DILLEY.
