('client league baseball season for 1 000 took place at Hanover park yesterday afternoon when Bristol defeated Meriden 5 to 4 It was a horrible day for baseball and the 150 spectators shivered and danced around in a vain effort to keep warm Not onec during the game was a bit of sunshine seen and it was difficult to arouse much enthusiasm in the face of the cold penetrating north wind which swept the stands Considering the wintry atmosphere noth teams played good ball Bristol took the lead at the start and was never headed although the visitors had a great scare in the main inning when Meriden made all their four runs and had three men on bases when Mathison struck out it was a great finish and reminded the eianks of tnc champion team ol that won many a game by sensational work iu the final inning Clay and Sullivan the new Meriden players showed up well and were a big improvement over their predecessors Clay caught a good game made a hit in the ninth and also made a clever sacrifice his lirst time up Sullivan allowed he was a good waiter and walked twice (During the lirst eight innings Meriden had a number of chances to score but with men 011 bases the following batsmen were useless with the stick and many opportunities were lost Bn-i-i was also weak with the willow they securing but three hits off Touts as against five off After the third inning Tout was invincible and but for loose work behind him Bristol would not have won Neither side tallied in the opening inning but in the second the visitors bagged a trio of 1 uns when sharp work would have held them down to only one Charlie Kennedy opened with a rattling two-bagger to right center With two strikes on Courtney ami no trails Foutz went up in the air and was unable to locate the plate the ex-Meridenite walking Manley grounded to Unglaub who cleverly lined the trail to first retiring the batter In the meantime Kennedy reached third on a passed ball and Courtney stole second Green hit a slow bounder to Jordan who had ample time to retire the better but instead threw to the plate in a vain effort to catch Kennedy who was safe by a yard After Green stole second Mack retired with a pop fly to Wilson Pfen-ninger came to the rescue with a fine sin-ble scoring both runners Kelley scored fof Bristol in the third He was hit with the ball stole second and came home early on very bad error of Courtney tap Foutz fumbled the grounder and then threw wildly to first last run was made in the seventh Kelley walked on balls and stole second Clay's throw was low and the horsahide went through Wilson the runner keeping on to third With one out Courtney grounded to Foutz and Kelley was caught between third and home It looked like a cinch out but Unglaub threw high and although Clay stopped the ball he could not hold it What the spectators began rooting for in the ninth wan to save Meriden the ignominy of a shut out The outlook was dubious when Mathison was retired on a grounder from third to first Sullivan got a free pass and when Oountnoy stopped grounder and then threw wildly to second allowing Sullivan to reach third hope was revived among The fans Wilson promptly stole second and a great cheer followed when Greer hit to Theisen who could have retired the batter but instead threw home to catch Sullivan but failed by a hair Brooks followed with a fine single to right and two more runs came in Clay also singled to right Unglaub who was very weak with the stick all day then struck out but Jordan filled the bases by getting hit with the ball after having two strikes called on him Foutz followed and Manley gave him four bad balls preferring to take chances with the next batter rs Foutz had previously made a two base hit and is considered the best hitter in the Meriden team When Foutz walked Brooks came home and the score was 5 to 4 with three men on bases and two out and the crowd in a frenzy Mathison ended the excitement by striking out On the first ball pitched lie jumped out of the box in an effort to get hit with the ball This trick failed to work with the umpire and one strike was called on him He struck at the next two balls hut failed to connect and the contest was over The score: MERIDEN ab bh po a HORSE SALE!
