THE KANSAS CITY STAR THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 8 1968 14 9dwcl Stats' PRO GRID BILL BLOCKED Rep Emanuel Celler of New York Says House Judiciary Committee Will Not Act on Anti trust Legislation This Year Stapleton Cyclones Rated His All-Time Best MERGER TO GET ANOTHER LOOK Commissioner Pete Rozelle Says Failure Calls for Re-evaluation of One-League Plan Celler Gives Go-Ahead By Bill Sims (Aisisfsnt Sports Editor of The Star) PERHAPS the greatest thing that could have happened to Iowa State this season would have been the opportunity to completely reverse its schedule No one connected with the coaches players or fans hesitates to comment that this should be the best team ever in Coach Clay Sta- numbers 60 and Stapleton is happy not only with the additional numbers but the added talent available fed our offense will be improved as well as the Stapleton says is no doubt the over-all picture is better than it was last year at this time but our schedule may make it tough to improve on that 5-4-1 record may be overly impressed with this squad bat for the first time I feel we can compete with anyone in the Big Eight except Nebraska Of course knowing Boh Devaney like I do aad what a great psychologist he is interpret those words to mean tried to set him np for the kill probably use them to heat die hell oat of as not what I meant them for just trying to be realistic a fine football coach He has a fine the team to beat But I believe Nebraska is out of our reach think potentially this is the best football team had at Iowa State But while T- think we have our best team I also feel our conference is the best it has Van alder Key Man Probably die player most responsible for the enthusiasm about Iowa prospects is the most confident young man wearing a uniform in the Big Eight this season Tim Van Galder The spider-legged strong- 8-year tenure Yet a ack-hreaking could gun do' breaking early schedule lown Iowa State tics bat Van Galder has no donbt improve on them this campaign A loquaefowr vonug man whose late father was backfield ccftch at Wisconsin Van Galder is not one to underrate his ability or that of his teammates Stapleton comments on that this way nothing I can tell you about Tim that he already told you Van Galder already is so keyed up about meeting Wisconsin in the opener in Madison that the coaches are fretting just a bit because they fear be so that it may affect his performance There certainly is no fear however that be looking past the first game Van prime aerial target will be Eppie Barney senior split end who really came into his own last season (Continued on Page 17) Washington Rep Emanuel Celler (D-N Y) turned down a plea from Commissioner Pete Rozelle today for legislation that would exempt the merger of the National and American Football leagues from antitrust laws After merging from Cel- office Rozelle said failure to get the legislation will call for a re-evaluation of the merger which is supposed to be launched with a title game between the two league champions next January It was reported from another source that he said the merger NEW CONTRACT FOR STEADMAN Chiefs' General Manager Is Signed for Three Years hopes for a tremendous record The Cyclones open with Wisconsin then face in order Oklahoma Nebraska Kansas Colorado and Missouri before finishing the season with Oklahoma State Kansas State Arizona and Colorado State Thus they met all of their top contenders for the first division in the Big Eight conference in the first six weeks of the season If they survive fairly well through this torturous period look out Stapleton is more optimistic this year than a kid locked in a candy store But it must be pointed out his optimism is tempered by the thought that even though there is more talent available this season than ever before the final record Cyclones Capsulized PREDICTED Fourth TEAM Excellent passing attack Solid running game Good sophomores as replacements on defense TEAM Lack of Rozelle flatly he would not act on any legislation this year He said he advised Rozelle to go ahead with the merger however in view of the fact that neither the Justice department or any individual had filed suit attacking it The Senate has passed a bill that would provide a broad exemption for all major professional sports from the antitrust laws However Celler co-author of the Celler-Kefauver act which outlaws mergers held to be in restraint of trade has long been opposed to such exemptions He said he told Rozelle that granting congressional approval of the merger to the two professional football leagues would open the way for other businesses to try to get similar antitrust exemptions Golfers Set For Pro-Am In Carthage Carthage Mo A field of 22 professionals and 66 amateurs will tee American League Lest Ret Behind A READY WITH BEST Odom Nash and Krausse Will Be Kansas City's Starters in 3-Game Series With Detroit Opening at Municipal Stadium Tomorrow Night TEAM GETS BEADY FOR BIG PUSH Manager Al Dark Will Use Front-Line Players to Get Athletics as High as Possible Starters Bullpen in Fine Shape By Sid Bordman (A Member of The Star's Sports Staff) When the Athletics bump heads with Detroit this weekend Manager Al Dark will go with his best pitchers Blue Moon Odom Jim Nash and Lew Krausse are TL0 A'c Aw-r-ae his choices against the 1 ne 5 Mvera9es second-place Tigers in the 3-game series in the Municipal Stadium Nash and Krausse will do most of the starting the rest of the pointed out Dark (Catfish) also might start but over the weekend I want to use him in Hunter an 8-game winner rejoined the two weeks ago after recuperating from an appendectomy The Athletics cleared the deck for their encounters with Detroit last night whipping California 6-3 in the rubber game erf the series They moved into a virtual tie for seventh place with Washington and earned a 9-9 record with the Angels in the season series Krausse garnered his 12th victory and Aker his 24th save as the jumped their home record to 38-34 way the schedule is set Dark said can probably stay with a 3- or 4-man starting rotation There are some off days and no double-headers want to finish as high as possible We can finish seventh but have to beat Detroit and Baltimore to do After taking on the Tigers the rest Monday Then they play three games in Cleveland and two in Washington before returning to Municipal Stadium to face Baltimore and Cleveland in a 3-game series The wind up on the road against Baltimore and Detroit Both are 2-game sets The bullpen brigade also is primed for the seventh-place campaign is the way Dark described his relief crew is strong again and Stock has been doing a heck of a job So have the Aker had a tough two nights against the Angels in California late last month Then Dark gave him a 7-day rest was said Dark if I would have needed Aker that Sunday Nash pitched in California I would have used him you have somebody like Aker tough to keep him out of there You have to make yourself rest Stock who two seasons ago was one of the top relief pitchers in the game ran into shoulder trouble in 1965 The 32-year-old right-hander was released by the before the start of the season He went to Vancouver as pitching coach I left the this spring Dark told me my arm would come said Stock who has not allowed a run in his last eight outings In the 10 innings of work Stock has yielded only three hits He has struck out 11 walked 6 and reduced his earned run average to 256 A month ago it was 450 Stock who rejoined the July 1 says his arm is as strong as it was in 1964 when he fashioned an 8-3 record with a 213 A arm felt answered Stock fact it felt good when I came here in July All of the pain had Los Angeles (AP) A daring run by the amazing Willie Mays on a game winning base hit by a brand-new rookie playing in his first major-league game gave the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers last night in the 12th inning of a 3-hour
