V-' Unbelieveable! But true! In 1978 Governor Lamar Alexander crossed the state telling everyone: If elected, I will dedicate myself to being the best Governor Tennessee had ever had. The Governor would be the first to say that living up to that promise has been helped along by dedicated department heads, staff members, a cooperating legislature and a devoted electorate. In 1980, after two years as the State Chief Executive, in fepite of a declining national and world economy, capital investments in Tennessee approximated 130 million more than the total for the three years previous. In 1980, existing Tennessee industries announced 129 expansions costing $853,470,000 and producing new jobs. New plants accounted for 52 percent of the investment ratal and 57 percent of the new These industries invested $922,894,000 in 80 plants that will create 7,294 new jobs.

The Governor's goal has been to raise the level of family income which stands 42nd when.compared.to other states. His success, at recruiting new industry puts his goal in sight. The announcement last week that Consolidated Aluminum Corporation plans to spend $600 million on additions to, its plant -at New Johnson ville and new construction for a fabricating facility af Jdckson, is a strong indication that 1981 may very1 well be a better year than 1980 for recruiting new industry and adding to those already herp. Most exciting to the people of Middle Tennessee, Rutherford County and Smyrna in particular, is the construction of a $300 million Datsun truck manufacturing plant by Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corporation U.S.A. This plant, when completed in 1963, will provide' 2200 well-paying jobs for local people with tremendous spinoff benefits for the retail and commercial community.

While industrial development and expansion, producing more jobs and' a higher standard of living for Tennesseans is currently the Governors main focus, he has not lost sight of concerns bam of a poor national economy and world energy shortages. I 'J! Significant is the Tenne-Senior program which provides the aged with discounts available at thousands of participating businesses across the State. It has-been welcomed by an age group whose incomes have been devastated by inflation and highprices in the marketplace. The Class-X Crime Law has done much to reduce felonious crime, If properly administered it can do much more to lessen our fears with respect to safety in By MASON TUCKER AMTRAK Amtrak is making a serious study of the railroad tracks between Nashville and Atlanta with the view to restablishing passenger service (three trains daily, both ways) between these two dtifs. -A fact which apparently spared us of something even worse. Its strange how an expensive store-bought Valentine would probably have been lost and forgotten, but a memory produced by something so personal, lives on and on and on. During his remarks, Governor Alexander stated that 99.5 percent of the people- in Tennessee and Rutherford County welcome Nissan. Some of the benefits to be derived from Nissans presence in Smyrna, the Governor pointed out are: the Datsun in 1983 all' the Datsun trucks sold in the United States will be made by Tennesseans in Smyrna Nissan begins thi month to spend at least $200 million in construction, mostly in Tennessee, and to hire up to 3, 000 construction Tennesseans. Then they. will hire 200 Tennesseans at an average bf $20,000 per a $40 million annual in Tennessee. At the present time, Tennesseans enjoy an overall tax fate that is the fourth lowest among all other States.
