visitors Tuesday evening was somewhat interesting if all reports are correct When Mr Pattee stated that he schools had exceeded their appropriations for fuel there was an incredulous smile on perspiring faces but it was shown that every district in the town with one the had exceeded its allowance The Prattsvillo school had been allowed $250 and the bills ran up to $450 the Railroad's $225 allowance showed $34122 spent for fuel the Old Road and in fact all the schools had spent from forty to eighty per cent more than their allowances Mr Pattee stated that it was an unusually severe winter the members wanted to know whether the district committees ran up these extra bills alone or whether Mr Pcttee was first consulted Mr Pettec stated that the coal bills were brought to him for auditing The business was delayed by there being no tabulated figures on the expenditures and us one member stated: had last estimates and a wholesale demand for raising wages to work The fuel question was tabled until the next meeting which will be held a week from tonight when Mr Pettee is expected to have figures with him for the joint committee to work upon I Cj i 4 I 11 iv Committeemen British yacht Valkyrie up to the present ought to ho peculiarly gratifying to Americans Every one has heard the old saying that an Englishman never knows when he is whipped and in no class of contests does it have a more apt application than in those for the America's cup Our transatlantic brethren have been defeated in race after race of the long series but they have never been convinced that they were beaten They have admitted readily enough and with sportsmanlike fairness that the challenging yachts wore beaten on their merits but they have fallen back on the assertion that these were not representative craft This assertion has in general been well founded The Cambria the first challenger came hero simply because: her owner Mr Ashbury desired to make an attempt to get back the cup This gentleman having sailed his schooner against a fleet of fourteen and having finished behiud nine of them was so dissatisfied that he built a now schooner the and came back to try again In five three against the Columbia and two against the she lost four The point to be noted is that neither of Mr schooners had demonstrated her right to be regarded as the best that England could send us and the II-CiFTIIH 8 WOODS EDMORDS OH SILVER Summer pleasant' ferin of Canada she was certainly representative of nothing but misguided enthusiasm This enthusiasm broke out again four years later when the Canadians sent the Atalanta In the first race she finished so far behind that she was not timed in the second her competitor the Mischief beat her nearly thirty-nine minutes After that Canadian enthusiasm sank It was plainly evident that the Countess and the Atalanta were not representative vessels In 1885 the challenges of the Genesta and Galatea arrived and the preliminary arrangements gave the preference the former postponing the races to the following year The Genesta was recognized as a good cutter but not the best in her class while it was generally conceded that the Gala-tea was less speedy Tho Genesta was beaten several times in the spring regattas in England and the Britons were thoroughly justified in declaring that neither she nor the Galatea was a representative yacht On the other hand the and the Mayflower represented the higher designing skill in this country and were chosen to defend the cup after trial races which demonstrated their fitness for the task In 1887 the Thistle was built and she came pretty near to being a representative yacht vet she was beaten several times on her merits in English waters before she came here The Volunteer on the other hand was indisputably the fastest and most powerful American racer This year however the conditions are all changed and the Valkyrie will come over unquestionably a representative while the yacht chosen to defend the cup may or may not be The Valkyrie has won every one of her races in which the conditions have been of the best kind She has failed only when disabled or when enabled another yacht to win by time allowance She is without a shadow of a doubt the fastest yacht in Great Britain Her superiority over the Britannia however is so small that Mr Royal Navahoe will also have to meet George Edmunds in an interview yesterday said in regard to the Sherman silver purchase law: am as much responsible for the existence of that law as any man who supported it But I voted for it ns I believe every other senator from New England New York New Jersey Pennsylvania Delaware and Maryland did because it was a question whether we bad that or absolute free coinage I say it openly that we canvassed the senate and found a majority which would have passed a free coinage bill if we bad not compromised on the so-called Sherman act As I remember it and I will not try to give exact figures about three-fourths of the Democrats and about one-fourth of the Republicans favored free coinage In the Republican caucuses I proposed and argued in favor of limiting the Sherman act to five or ten years Tthe free coinage men would not you believe it should be do and I see no substitute iegisla tion which is likely to be agreed to If I wor in congress possibly I would support a measure establishing a ratio between gold and silver at about the real difference in value perhaps 1 to 18 or 19 if those be the figures now But it will be impossible to make a ratio which will he lasting because of the unequal production of gold and silver From time to time the ratio must be changed to meet this difference in production I do not desire to at on the use of silver as money but I would favor a repeal of the Sherman act and a return to the old law which existed prior to 1873 Lot the government buy whatever silver it needs aud coin it have been at a loss to know what can lie done if the next congress repeals the Sherman act I do not know whether it will lie possible to pass a bill Which Mr Cleveland will sign He is sound on this question His opinion that free coinage would bring financial disaster coincides with mine I believe he is honest and has sound judgment on this matter but whether even if ho brought the immense patronage to bear upon men who can see nothing in statesmanship lurger than an and I do not criticize him for doing can bring congress to enact legislation which will restore confidence 1 cannot CLOTHIERS SEVERAL MEN KILLED IN BOHEMIA Vienna June One
