Many comets too 8m ail to aee without a telescope appear in our sky But since 1900 only four comets bright enough to be seen in the daytime have appeared One at these was the Ikeya-Seki comet that visited os last tell and because of it astronomers rate 1966 as the year of a great comet Some of us sow the fuzzy tail of Ikeya-Seki in the dawn skies of September and October Most of us did not see it at but the news of it certainly made pen pals mighty curious about comets Every comet is a member at (fee sun's family and belongs to our solar system Like a planet it travels around the son on its own orbit Bat the orbit of a planet is mere or less circular which means that the planet stays mere or less the same distance from the sub A orbit is a long narrow elliptical oval At two ends at the path there are sharp U-turns and one at them loops close around the sun The other loop is out beyond the orbits of earth and the inner planets are out beyond the orbits of Saturn and distant Uranus We see the comet only when it comes to make its close U-turn around the sun As it crosses the orbit at Mars the radiant pressure of the sun sends streamers of dusty gases out behind it Soon the comet and its filmy tail catch the sunshine and glow with golden light We con see it night by night or even day by day getting closer to the sun It gets brighter and travels faster and faster as it swings around sometimes close enough to pass through the gaseous atmosphere of the sun Then it goes back on the other side of its long orbit It slows down and loses its golden glow and it may take years or even centuries to chug along to the other end of its orbit There it makes another turn and starts back for another visit to the sun The Ikeya-Seki comet came from a long lonely journey through the solar system The other comets also come from journeys through the vast empty spaces between the planets and there they return when their short dazzling visits to the sun are done A comet is a showy sight but actually it is a small member of the solar system There is enough material in our moon to make a dozen or more razzle-dazzle comets And comet material is a bulky mass of stones and frozen gases Experts suspect that the glowing tail may be made mostly of fine gaseous fragments torn from the comet Most comets are smaller and weaker after each visit to the sun A few have broken apart and years later two or more of the pieces have returned as separate comets IB Aady sends a World Book Adas to Earl Bay 16 Long Island City for his question: Why are hurricanes named after girls?
