Street, Lincoln NEBRASKA STATE HISTORICAL NADIASKA SOCIETY The Cairo Record JUL 27 1964 Serving Cairo and Community Since 1902 VOLUME 61 CAIRO, HALL COUNTY, NEBRASKA FRIDAY, JULY 24, 1964 NUMBER 1 Nebr. 1500 Boelus hands Cairo second defeat Boelus trailing 4 to 1 at the end of 5 innings used a 7 run 6th inning in defeating Cairo 10 to 7 on the home diamond.

Marv Casperson highlighted the big inning with a 3 run home run that broke a 4 all deadlock. Walt Stoeger capped the Boelus scoring in the 8th inning with a 2 run homer. Cairo jumped off to an early 4 run lead in the 3rd inning off Jakubowski with back-to-back singles by Ostermeier and Myers with one out followed by Tesmers run scoring double, an intentional pass to Mader to load the bases, Wilber Spiehs infield single and John Tooley 2 run single. John Stokman took the loss for Cairo and was relieved by Ed Rathman in the 8th inning. Stokman allowed only 1 hit over the first innings before disaster struck.

Arnold Jakubowski went the distance for the winners scattering 11 hits. Wilber Spiehs, Art Ostermier, and Bob T'esmer each collected 2 hits for the losers. On Wednesday night Cairo defeated Doniphan 16 to 10 under their new lights. Cairo built up a 16 to 2 lead after 7 innings and held off a late Doniphan rally. John Stokman, Ken Lauritsen, and Bob Tesmer shared the mound duties for the winners.

Stokman pitched the first 5 innings allowing 2 runs and 4 hits in collecting the win. Jerry Myers and Bob Tesmer led the 13 hit Cairo attack against 3 Doniphan hurlers as each collected 3 hits. Tesmer collected 3 singles and Myers a single and 2 doubles. Tom Sorahan and Glen Frauen homered for the losers. Sorahan connected for a 2 run homer in the 4th inning and Frauen closed the Doniphan scoring with a 3 run home run in the 9th inning.

Frauen also added 2 singles to his credit. Cairo with a 13-win 2-loss-reeord will play 4th place Alda (7-8) on the home diamond Sunday night, July 26th at 8:30 p.m. Alda is currently riding a 3 game winning streak. Ravenna will play at Boelus and Wood phan. CAIRO 16 Ostermier J.

Boesen (Continued on Legion elects officers 1 U.S. Senator Miller visits In Calro Cairo in general, and Erv Whitehedd in particular, was host to a distinguished guest Monday morning, in the person of U. S. Senator Jack Miller, (Republican) of Iowa. He was returning from the National Convention in San Francisco, and stopped to see his father, Forrest Miller of Wood River.

The elder Miller and Mr. Whitehead attended country school and graduated from college together. In the last few years they have spent many hours together, and Mr. Miller brought the Senator to Cairo to visit Erv. Girls softball team The girls high school softball team of Cairo has a record of 3 wins and 4 losses, including one game which is in protest.

The first game of the season was at Ravenna, where Cairo lost 16 to 5. The second game played here with Hazard with a final score of 14 to 5 in favor of Cairo. The next game was held here with Pleasanton No. 1, which Cairo lost 8 to 5. Following this was a game with Pleasanton No.

2, Cairo losing 20 to 6. The questionable game was with Mason City leaving Cairo to lose 12 to 11. This game may be re-played. The next: game was here with Litchfield, and Cairo won 18 to 13. The following one scheduled with Poole was rained out.

The last game played thus far was with Ravenna here, Cairo winning in the last half of the last inning by a score of 13 to 12. We now have five regular games left, plus the make-up game with Poole and a non-league game with a Grand Island ladies team. The five regular games are to be played away from home. Cairo has a very fine chance for winning a good place by the end of the season. William Behrens dies aha William Behrens, 81, died in a Hastings hospital Saturday evening.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Steele Funeral Home, Loup City. Burial was in the Loup City Cemetery. Mr. Behrens was born Dec.

6, 1882, in Hamburg, Germany. He came to the States with his mother and sisters when he was 16, locating near Loup City where he farmed. He continued farming after his marriage to Christine Luebs. He is survived- by. his wife; two sons, Ed of Cairo and Lloyd of Cheyenne, four daughters, Mrs.

Earl Galloway of Newport, Mrs. John Ammon of Bassett, Mrs. Murray Nelson of Ord and Mrs. Helen Casey of San Francisco, 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Floyd, on April 2, 1964.

Post 333 endorses Lowry The Cairo American Legion Post officially endorsed Bob Low. ry, who will enter the race at the State Convention in Grand Island for National Alternate Executive Committeeman. Bob has served the American Legion in many capacities in the last fourteen years, as er of the local post numerous times, District Commander, Area Commander, and has been chairman of the state oratorical contest for several years. Shower honors Mrs. Robertson Mrs.

Mike Robertson, the former Joan Stoeger, was honored at a miscellaneous shower at- the Cairo Aid Hall Saturday night. Mrs. Vernon Heupel introduced the program which included vocal numbers by Diann, Marilyn, Renee, LaJean and Lynette Harder. The first number was accompanled by LaJean on the clarinet and the second on the guitar. Cindy Mieth played piano solos.

Glenda Schuett, Gloria Lundquist and Lois Brehm sang trio numbers ac companied by Joyce Sorensen. Peggy Stoeger, sister of the bride, was in charge of the guest book. Cindy Mieth received the gifts. Unwrapping the gifts were Mrs. Chuck Pokorney, sister, Patty Lea Bruhn and Virginia Stutzman.

Mrs. Don Rich registered the gifts and Mrs. Jerry Watson, sister of the bride, filled the ribbon pillow. Among the guests were the grandmothers, Mrs. Barbara Keck, Grand Island, and Mrs.

Luella Stoeger of Cairo; Mrs. George DeSoe and Mrs. Don Rich of Omaha; and the groom's mother, Mrs. Wil liam Robertson of Grand Island. Mr.

and Mrs. Robertson are residing in Cozad. Little League season ends LITTLE LEAGUE STANDINGS Cubs 7 2 Sox Bums 5 Tigers 0 2 7 The Bums emerged victorious in the final game Monday night and ended in possession of second place the only spot that was I in dispute. The Cubs had first sewed up a week ago, and the Tigers had last in the bag, but the Bums and Sox were tied for second and third. With the Bums decisive win over the Tigers, and the Cubs win over the outcome eliminated any ties.

Leagues have had a highly successful season in many respects. For one thing, not a single game was rained out, and for another, most of the games were close, due mostly to an outstanding array of pitchers, who all had their share of strike-outs. Ted Stoeger's observe 25th anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Ted Stoeger recently observed their 25th wedding anniversary by entertaining their family and his mother, Mrs.

Luella Stoeger and Miss Patty Lee Bruhn at a supper in Grand Island. Ted Stoeger and the former Miss Minnie Wyatt of Columbus, were married there July 8, 1939. They lived near Columbus for a year and a half, before moving to the farm southeast of Cairo where they have since resided. They are the parents of five children; Carl (Bud) and Peggy at home, Mrs. Jerry Watson and Mrs.

Chuck Pokorney, both of Grand Island and Mrs. Mike Robertson of Cozad, and three grandchildren. Diana Church was dismissed Sunday from St. Francis Hospital where she had been receiving medical attention. Circle, 13 of Blessed Sacrament Altar Society held their annual picnic in Hulett Park recently with 60 guests attending.

Special guests were Mrs. Amel Hruza, president of the Altar Society, and Mr. Hruza of Grand Island. Rites held for B. J.

Orndoff Election of officers was held at the Wednesday night meeting American Legion Post 333 of Cairo. Harlan Nelson is retiring commander. Al Veeder was elected commander; Stanley Grandstaff, vice commander; Harley Stutzman, adjutant; Bob Larson, finance officer; Alvin Jewell, service officer; Adrian Schuyler, employment officer; Stan Grandstaff, membership; Paul Mecham, chaplain; Stuart Mieth, disaster and relief; Burdette Caswell, community service; Bob Veeder, Americanism; Richard Mohanna, publicity. Delegates to attend the state convention in Grand Island the last part of August are: Harlan Nelson, Bob Larson and Burdette Caswell. Alternate delegates are Harley Stutzman, Alfred Veeder and Bob Lowry.

The newly elected officers will be installed at the next meeting. Legion Midgets win over Ord With the Legion Midgets Tour. nament the 27th of this month at St. Paul, Cairo's youngsters put out their finest effort Tuesday evening by beating a strong Ord team 2 to 1. Dennis Harb gave up only one hit to the losers, and struck out 12 batters with a blazing fast ball.

Cairo picked up only four hits but scored runs in the first and sixth. Harb, Swanson, Roberts and Baasch all hit singles. On July 27, the Midgets open the tournament with St. Paul, who they have beaten once during the regular season. Weather stays hot Again mother nature displayed her unpredictable temperament as temperatures soared into the 100 degree range this week.

Monday sleeping uncomfortable for those without air conditioning, and Tuesday the mercury reached 102. More hot weather was on the way according to the weatherman, and the possibility of thunder showers were most remote. HELP ONE ANOTHER CLUB The Help One Another Club held a non-hostess picnic at Hulett Park recently, with 8 members and one visitor, Mrs Ora Wilson of Ord, present. Ten point pitch was played with Mrs. Ernest Johnson winning high score and Mrs.

Wm. Schaupdach, low. The annual family picnic will be held August 23, at noon, at the Hulett Park. CAN I CAN EXTENSION CLUB The members of the Can I Can Extension Club went to Ravenna Thursday afternoon where Mrs. Mary Harris hosted the meeting in the State recreational park there.

The ladies took a picnic lunch. While in Ravenna they also went to the rest home and visited Mrs. Opal Piersol, Mrs. Kappler, and Detlef Bruhn, who reside there. On the evening of August 19th the club members and their families will meet for a picnic at Hulett Park in Cairo.

RUTH CIRCLE MEETS Ruth Circle of the WSCS met at the home of Mrs. Chas. M. Giffen last Wednesday afternoon. Mrs.

Jim Dryden had charge of devotions and the lesson. She showed a film strip on Elisha and Elijah. Mrs. Giffen served refreshments following the meeting. Funeral services for Bryan J.

Orndoff, 66, were held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo, with the Rev. Homer Long, Methodist Minister from Wood Rievr, conducting the services. Burial was in Cairo Cemetery. Mrs.

Alfred Veeder, pianist, accompanied herself and Bob Larson as they sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond The Pallbearers were Harry I. Turner, Harold Dunlap, Larry Stutzman, Wayne Sorensen, Pete Murie and Lester Claussen. Honor Guards during the ice were H. H. Nelson and Bob Lowry.

Bob Lowry folded the flag and Nelson presented it to Mrs. Orndoff. Taps was played by Gloria Lundquist. Mr. Orndoff died last Wednesday in a Grand Island hospital to which he had been admitted the day before.

He had been Ill for several months. He was born on a farm near Cairo, Nov. 6, 1897. His parents were Edward James and Mary Carr Orndoff. He married Muriel Cunningham July 1, 1930, at Madison.

He was a barber at Cairo for 27 years and was ansociated with the Turner Grain Company for the next 20 years. He retired in 1961 because of ill health. He was a World War I veteran and a member of American Legion Post 333 and Grand Island Platte-Duetsche Society. Mr. Orndoff is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs.

Bill Enderle of Omaha and Mrs. Byron Neiman of Crawfordsville, seven grandchildren; one brother, Duard Orndoff of Wenatchee, and two sisters, Mrs. Opal Irvin of Spokane, and Mrs. Anna Brundage of Crawford. Relatives 'present from a distance were.

his two daughters, Mrs. Bill Enderle, Mr. Enderle and family of Omaha, and Mrs. Byron -Byron-Neiman-of-Crawfordsville, Mrs. Carl Fletcher, Hillsboro, Mr.

and Mrs. Wilmer Orndoff, Mitchell, So. Mrs. Beryl Cunningham, Omaha; Mrs. George Summer, Mr.

Merton Schweitzer of Cairo, completed an artillery survey course at the Army Artillery and Missile Center, Fort Sill, July 20. During the course Schweitzer received instruction in the use and care of surveying equipment, communications procedures and reading and interpreting of military maps. He entered the Army in February of this year and received basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Schweitzer attended Cairo High School and was employed by Missouri Valley Construction Company in Grand Island, before entering the Army. Stork's Nest Mr.

and Mrs. John Gossin of: Lincoln are the parents of an 8 lb. 6 oz. daughter, Patricia Lynn, born July 17. Grandparents are Mr.
