very short After referring to the Lamp committee petition for a gasoline lamp at the corner of Cooper and Meridian streets the report of the hone railroad committee wu taken from the table and adi pted Its provisions are follows: That the City Surveyor be authorized to give the Meriden Hone Railroad company the grade on which they may lay their tracks which shall be the present grade of the streets through which said company proposes to build its road provided that any change in grade or gutten made necessary to accommodate said railroad shall be made at the ex-oe of said railroad contact with any water sates they shall be varied a sufficient distance to allow tha Water Department free access te said water gates That the special committee of five shall be continued and with the Mayor and City Surveyor shall have power to decide all matters regarding the building of said railroad which may require action between the meetings of the Common Council and may make such changes in the above orders may be deemed necessary or expedient provided that the order tie substantially complied with Said one of the directors of the Horse Railroad company to-day: "Wa have not yet held a meeting to decide whether the road shall make a direct connection be tween Hanover and Pratt streets by running through Perkina street or even by going from Hanover street to Main ana east te Pratt street The matter will come up at a meeting to be held this week It is safe to uy however that such direct connection will be made there seems to be a popular demand for It" Now that tha Council ku carrying in hia hand a valise which appeared to be very heavy This stranger after looking around awhile approached Mix's teamster and persuaded him to carry the box te a point near where he unloaded it The stranger then hired Pring'a man to carry the box to tha point near when the box was found telling him another man from Cheshire would meet him and take the hex The man did not meet him and he left the box little is lance from where it wu found For his services he received a dollar and a drink of whisky from a bottle exactly like the one found What afterwards became of (tha stranger no one knows and tha valise found is said to be the one he carried The theory now advanced ia that the box found ana the one carted by Mix's and Pring'a men are identical and that if any team wu to have met the stranger it did not do se and tha box wu hidden where it wu found The developments are sufficient anyway to warrant an attempt to find tha stranger and once found the rest it ia believed will be a and Col Bario representing Tomlinson and Reynolds re-fpectirely openly defined the issue because there was no use in trying to hide it Mr Higbywas quite eloquent in his praises of Milford's favorite son and but for Col telling little speech it is quite probable that enough of the labor element would hare followed Mr lead to defeat the Reynolds delegates As it was CoL Bario'i re marks solidified the Reynolds forces and settled the matter in his favor The state delegation it is said will be for Cleveland The congressional delegation contains at least three member who will endeavor to get the convention to endorse George Mansfield the labor candidate They will stand by the nominee who ever he is For senator the Meriden delegation will be solid for Dr 8 Davis of this city and he probably will be the nominee The contest between him and Mayor Doolittle for senatorial honors will be a very pretty one LET ITBOOX Now that the matter of grade is settled let the Horse Railroad Company folkide-cide to build the line from Hanover street to Pratt street through South Colony and Perkins streets and then push the work so that we can ride on the cars next winter The people are deeply interested in the project and will patronize the road so liberally that its success is assured from the start The representatives of the labor organizations believe that with Dr Davis they can carry the Sixth senatorial district Next Saturday the new one dollar silver certificates will be issued Well soon bid good by to the cart wheel dollar and hide it In the vaults It's a curious fact that only
