"FIRST FAMILY" of the nation's big missiles include from left Honest John a medium to long range artillery rocket capable of carrying either a conventional or nuclear war head Nike a high speed long range guided missile which is designed to track and destroy the fastest military plane and Corporal a long range guided' missile capable of carrying a conventional or nuclear war head and used against surface targets El Paso Is one of the centers of the nation's sixth largest Industry which today Is providing natural gas service to more than 30(000f000 American homes shops and fao toories The City serves as headquarters for the far-flung operations of the El Paso Natural Gas Co and is the divisional headquarters for the Southern Union Gas Company According to Kelley Southern Union's Division Manager the utility provides gas service to more than 42000 local customers and on addition supplies a perfect fuel to many comerdal and industrial establishments in the El Paso' area Construction expenditures of Southern Union amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars in El Pass in 1956 Mr Kelley pointed out and present plans call for an investment of an additional $600-000 this year to meet the city's growing natural gas requirements Organized in 1929 The development of the natural gas industry in the Southwest has closely paralleled the growth of Southern Union Gas Co Mr Kelley pointed out Southern Union was organized in 1929 to operate gas distribution systems in several West Texas towns In 1944 it purchased the system at El Paso and today employs nearly 300 men and women in the area to distribut gas obtained from fields in Lea County New Mexico and Southwest Texas "V- Today the company not only distributes natural gas but is also engaged in exploration production and transmission activities It operates in 65 cities and towns in Texas New Mexico Arizona and Colorado and supplies natural gas to nearly 300000 customers To do this it maintains more than 5000 miles of pipeline facilities located in such widespread areas as Port Arthur Texas Durango Colorado and Flagstaff Ariz Employe 200000 The phenomenal growth of the $20 billion gas industry which now accounts for more than 25 per cent of the energy needs and -employs more than 200000 people has been aided by three primary factors First the demand for more energy to fuel our American economy has been constantly growing Since natural gas 'possesses qualities for so many different economical uses' it is becoming more widely used each day for cooking heating refrigerating and air conditioning Second the post-war development of a great network oT natural gas pipelines has afforded nearly all Americans the use of the fuel Third through intensive research many new uses of natural gas have been developed for -Industry commerce and the home Distribution of natural gas in the -A "A I discoveries Geologists have calculated that unproven gas reserves in the may eventually total as much as 1200000000000000 cubic feet Southern distribution of natural gas last year helped boost foe 1956 consumption total to more than 10000000000000 cubic-feet Since it has been estimated that by 1966 foe consumption of natural gas will reach 16 000000000000 cubic feet a year new facilities costing millions of dollars must be built each year by the industry to provide ample fuel!
