i THE CHADRON RECORD Friday August 7 1987 Page 5 West All-Stars Hope Quickness Can Offset Size pppap SCOTTSBLUFF-The West Saturday night when the 10th hopes quickness will help offset annual Western Nebraska All-the size advantage Star Football Game is played at Kickoff for the game will be 8 at Bearcat Stadium The series is tied at 4-4-1 The game will be shown over the Nebraska Educational Television Network at 8 pm Monday Aug 10 on a tape delay Jaggers will spell starter Aaron Smith of Gering as the signal caller Dormann said It was planned that Jaggers would also see some action at cornerback but been bothered by a sore back and will probably limit his activities to offense the coach related guard spots Dormann said The other area players will probably serve as alternates Dormann said They are Jeff Jaggers of Rushville at quarterback Herb Haller of Rushville at defensive end and Tom Peddicord of Gordon at linebacker Bearcat Stadium in Scottsbluff as quick as we are be in said Harlin Dormann of Leyton the head coach for the West Dormann said by telephone Thursday night that his team has shown lots of improvement the past couple of days particularly on offense defense is still probably a little bit ahead of the offense but the offense has been coming the veteran coach noted DORMANN SAID several players from northwest Nebraska are playing key roles in the strategy Particularly impressive he said have been Tucker Thompson at defensive tackle and Hay Allen Terwilliger at cornerback Dormann called Thompson enthusiastic and one of the bright lights so The coach said of Terwilliger a keeper I really planned on him playing wide receiver because I know how well he can catch the ball but we let him go over to defense and they give him Terwilliger will start at cornerback Dormann said ANOTHER CHADRON product Eric Hanson or Dan Pianalto of Hemingford will start at one of the offensive These northwest Nebraska gridders will be playing in the 10th annual West Nebraska All-Star Football Game in Scottsbluff Saturday night Kneeling from left are Tucker Thompson Chadron Dan Pianalto Hemingford and Herb Haller Rushville In the back are Eric Hanson Chadron Jeff Jaggers Rushville and Tom Peddicord Gordon Another member of the West squad is Allen Terwilliger Hay Springs Good Bad News For CSC Football Team fensive line SMITH SAID he will serve as the defensive coordinator while assistant coach Jeff Briggs will be in chaise of the offense Another full-time assistant Scott Ritzen will work with the defensive backs Smith noted that generally the head coach is in charge of the offense and the top assistant is the defensive coordinator However he related that as a college player he was a cornerback while Briggs was a runningback talked it over and we agree that it will probably work best for me to handle the defense and for him to be in charge of the offense still use my offensive system which will be the spread slot but be the coordinator for Smith said pari of the season because of injuries are definitely going to need some help from Smith noted MOST OF THE coaches will be new this fall The only member of the staff who helped last year is Phil Busby who will be in charge of the defensive line A player on last team Mike Kozeal of Sargent will serve as a student assistant and will probably work with the linebackers Smith said Another former CSC player Mike Barry of Grant will be a graduate assistant and will work with the wide receivers The other graduate assistants will be Glen Campbell of Blytheville Ark who will be in charge of the runningbacks and Bill of Des Moines who will handle the of- assistant coach for six years prior to moving to CSC last spring SMITH CALLED Lockwood of the most enthusiastic and exciting players ever been Lockwood has two years of eligibility remaining and will be able to play this fall the CSC coach said should help us a lot in an area where we have much Smith said The Eagles have just one returning letterman at wide receiver He is Scott Charron of Omaha mm About 80 players are expected to report for the start of fall drills at CSC on Sunday Aug 16 The group will include approximately 48 players who participated in limited spring drills at least 25 freshmen and a half dozen transfers loss means the Eagles will have just seven starters returning from last year and two of them missed the last Chadron State College Football Coach Brad Smith received some good news and some bad news this week The bad news was that linebacker Lary Robinson of Scottsbluff will not be able to play this fall because of a shoulder problem Robinson was the Lai7 Robinson leading tackier midway through the season last fall when he required shoulder surgery He informed Smith this week that doctors have advised him to forego football this year but said he plans to play again in 1988 The good news was that a highly-regarded wide receiver from Peoria 111 plans to join the Eagles He is Mike Lockwood who played two years at Western Illinois University where Smith was an by Com Marshall c- 1 While the rest of the pro football world is sweating its way toward the season openers on Sept 13 the Arena Football League has already completed its inaugural season That means Terry Hinn has been relaxing in Rushville the past week or so before heading to Colorado State University where he will complete work on his degree and help coach the gridders this fall Hinn is still excited about his experience although the 2-4 record that his Chicago Bruisers posted tied them for a spot in the basement He said the Bruisers treated their players well the fans were excited and the game was fun Hinn particularly liked the fact that he could play both offense and defense something most gridders above the high school level find as foreign as the Model these days lerr nn The game is perfect for small quick players such as Hinn who is 5-10 175 pounds With a layout half the size of a regulation size field players who could cut and dart into an open space were the most successful he said Defenders better have quick reactions or it was a touchdown he added The league scored plenty of anyway The scoring average was about 48 points per team per game Certainly not everyone could make the grade in the eight-man league Terry was one of just six who received a second look and one of only three who eventually earned spots on the teams from among the 510 men who tried out in Denver about a month before the league began its six-week season There were just four teams this year with those in Washington DC Denver and Pittsburgh joining the Bruisers Jim Foster of Des Plaines 111 who dreamed up the league said from 10 to 12 teams are expected next year Each team carried just 16 men on the roster first game was probably his best he said He returned an interception about five yards for a touchdown with 43 seconds left to allow Chicago to tie Denver and send the game into overtime He received the that was given to the player who did the best on both offense and defense The 1982 Rushville High grad also scored a touchdown on a pass reception during the season Altogether he estimates that he caught about a dozen passes He also returned kicks including one that he carried 38 yards He was a on offense and something of a cross between an outside linebacker and a free safety on defense Due some back spasms that sidelined him for a game midway through the season Terry said he was fearful of being cut However he stuck with the team and has been guaranteed an invitation to training camp again next year when the season is expected to run from March through Labor Day Since all of the other Chicago players had spent at least a year in the National or Canadian Football Leagues most of them felt the salaries were peanuts but Hinn has no complaints Like the other players he received $750 a game plus $100 for a victory All their expenses Were paid including milage to and from the practice fields Next base salary has been set at $25000 and incentive bonuses could increase them to the $40000 to $60000 level reports indicate Hinn said the crowds made the games extra exciting Since the fans were so close to the action he said they got the contests The league averaged nearly 12000 per game The noise was so great it was almost impossible to audible he related Yes Terry Hinn liked his first year of Arena football definitely looking forward to more of them No doubt about it former CSC Football Coach Glenn Brady was one of the most interesting personalities I have ever met He guided the Eagles just one year 1972 leading them to an 8-2 season and lots of memories for me Brady once told me that he hoped the opponents would scout the Eagles often because the more they saw of his offense the more be confused The Eagles employed several offensive sets that year and the foes never knew which formation encounter although the plays were basically the same I recall that Wayne State had some huge players on its team that year Brady told me prior to the game going to fight a fat boy I want to make him run Thus the Eagles ran sweep after sweep against the Wildcats in the first half and fagged the visitors CSC won the game 30-8 Indications are that Brady is still a bit unconventional Chadron current football coach Brad Smith is a Brady protege They came to Chadron together in 1972 with Smith serving as a grad assistant under Brady Smith recently showed me a program from the National Wellness convention at Stevens Point Wis Brady was the speaker at two sessions His topics were and Parable of the Poision Of course neither Smith nor I had a clue what the titles might pertain to But this mail included a flyer from Brady plugging his new book entitled Whole Armor of God and Poison It helped me understand one of his topics a little better The subtitle is Christian Guide to Total Health and Well Inside is this statement: person who reads and works through this is in for a tremendous surprise-what starts out as simple leisure reading will turn into a spiritual journey What may have been curiosity or a desire to Hose a few become a redirection and regeneration in Christian Growth and Brady and his wife Annette now run The Lifestyle Institute at Zachary La The book retails for $1095 Brady is trying to do his protege a good turn sending a young man Jerry Thomas to play football at CSC a good kid and a to Brady said in his note One of runningbacks in 1972 was Hay Springs native Rick Hcssler who lives in Chadron and works for the Railroad Rick undoubtedly does more than anyone to keep the Elks Midgets and Juniors baseball programs alive in Chadron He also still likes to play the game too and took part in the CSC alumni game last Saturday Something happened during the game that made me recall what Hcssler once told me Rick said that he preferred football to baseball because generally the harder one works at football the better the results But in baseball he said the batter can hit shot that somebody catches for an out while the next batter hit a marshmallow 10 feet in front of the plate and reaches base with a hit Guess who was the victim on Saturday? Hesslcr hit the ball hard all four times he batted and on all four occasions he was out His hardest hit was a rocket back to pitcher Ben Eichcr Eichcr never moved his glove The ball just stuck in it It nearly undressed him I saw Hessler shake his head as walked to the dug-out His words from a number of years ago had definitely proved true one more time Regional Pokes Are Riding High Hawk Fall Sports Get New Coaches The other event leader from the region is Clint Johnson of Spearfish SD who had pocketed $43412 in saddle bronc riding He has a lead of over $10000 over Derek Clark of San Marcos Tex Third in the saddle bronc standings is Tom Reeves of Lewisville Tex formerly of Eagle Butte SD Reeves has earned $30566 the PRCA Two cowboys from the region are leading the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association standings in their pet events Scott (Ote) Berry of Gordon holds about a $6000 lead in steer wrestling over Rod Lyman of Great Falls Mont Berry had earned $37932 through the end of July older brother Wade who hails from Miles City Mont is 11th in steer wrestling with $21812 Golf Tourney This Weekend Olson of Cody Wyo They birdied the final two holes for a 119 to edge two teams that finished with scores of 120 The playoff for second was won by Dr Dan Johnson of Chadron Jerry Hartman of Whitney and Lee Baumann of Monroe La Also involved in the playoff were Dr Pat Colgate of Chadron and his sons Bill of Omaha and Bob of Chadron As of late Thursday 26 teams had entered the annual Three-Man Scramble Golf Tournament that is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Ridgeview County Glub south of Chadron this weekend At least one of the three players on a team must be from out of town Last tourney was won by Matt Kanarick and Dave IGuse of Chadron and Neal Mike Montgomery who has been the assistant coach the past three years will serve as the head football coach and Kirk Isabell a 1987 graduate of the University of Wyoming will be the volleyball mentor Montgomery will be entering his eighth year at Hay Springs He also teaches English and physical education He received both his and degrees from Chadron State College The Hawks have had a cumulative record of 16-11 the past three years when Montgomery has helped John Weitzcl coach the football team Weitzcl resigned last spring to become superintendent and principal at Sidney St Isabell is a native of Shoshoni Wyo Hiles said He is married and has a young daughter He replaces Lark Durnell who resigned after serving just one year at Hay Springs Tourney Results Softball Tonmey Results Monday Second Round VillagcHers 14 All Seasons 3 120Smokics 19 South 40 5 120Smokics 16 All Seasons 12 120Smokics 18 VillagcHers 10 120Smokics 20 VillagcHers 10 1st 120Smokics 5-1 2nd VillagcHers 3-2 3rd All Seasons 2-2 Tourney Results Job Corp 21 South 40 1 Drillers 11 Job Corp 5 Drillers 16 South 40 5 Drillers Job Corp South 40 The fall sports coaches have been named at Hay Springs High School Supt Ron Hiles said 3 Chadron Golfers Place At Gordon Three Chadron golfers were placewinners last weekend at the Oglala Nation Golf Open held at Gordon Rod Flceman won the third flight Dale Engelhaupt tied for second in the first flight and Dale Williamson was third in the championship flight Williamson had rounds of 75 and 73 for a 148 total The championship round was won by Joe Prue of Pine Ridge with rounds of 70 and 71 Bob Mendoza of Eagle Butte was second with scores of 75 and 71 The first flight was won by Mike Kosmicki of Alliance with rounds of 80 and 76 Engelhaupt and South Dakotan Nelson Cottier had identical rounds of 81 and 78 for their deadlock for second They did not have a playoff scores were 93 and 82 kind of got used to the course the second he said Burk Shoots Well A Chadron man Lorry Burk did well at the recent trapshoot at Hot Springs Burk initially hit 99 of 100 targets to tic for first with two other men Sllvin Mulloy of Keystone and Hubert Joe VunGocyo of Rapid City Mulloy won the shootoff by hitting all 25 targets while Burk and VanGocyc hit 24 apiece They squared off again In the Class A shootoff with Mulloy again scoring a 25 and Burk a 24 SEAMLESS GUTTER SYSTEMS 900 WATERTOWN RC SO 57701 NOW 10 OFF Have new SEAMLESS GUTTERS Installed on your home while we are in your area and save 10 BAKED ENAMEL FINISH EXCLUSIVE WARRANTY 1605343-7595.
