and that the general purpose of the decree will be misunderstood LEADS IN PITTSBURGH The Rev Humphrey Shifted rom Milwaukee to Pennsylvania City Word was received in Indianapolis yes terday of the superintendent of the league In Wisconsin with headquarters at Milwaukee Recently the league has been strengthening its corps of workers In the East and it was decided to have the Rev Mr Humphrey take charge of the Pitts burgh district He will leave Milwaukee Sept 1 John Woolley Prohibition candidate for President in 1900 will suc ceed the Rev' Mr Humphrey at Mil waukee Mr Woolley once was superin tendent of the Antl Saloon League in the Hawaiian Islands and James assured them that he would be all right in a few days It is evident that neither of the Hoops drank any of the concoction until Tuesday night or if they did they did not partake of It heavily for Robert Hoop was not taken serious ly ill until about 8 in the evening Up was seized witn convulsions and despite all the efforts of Dr AV Min ikin died Tuesday evening at midnight DRINK AT Julius Dodson a laborer and Ira A Neese a barber friends of the Hoop fam ily were notified of the death of Bob Hoop and offered to sit up with the corpse Tllpre was some more drinking from the fatal jug Julius Dodson went nome about this morning At 6 In the morning his mother went to his room to awaken him but Dodson did not reply She entered her room and found him unconscious and breathing heavily Dr Millikin was summoned again but he was unable to arouse him He continued in a stupor until 12:30 this afternoon when he died William Hoop remained up all night at the side of his dead son drinking of the preparation from time to time At 9 this morning his sight began to fail He gradually grew worse dying shortly after 1 In the afternoon Neese went home where he became vio lently ill during the day but by that time it was understood that those dead were the victims of wood alcohol and strong emetics were given to Neese with the hope of saving him His sight began to fail however and at 3 this aft ernoon told his son that in the distance looked like Some hope was held out for recovery but at 8 tonight his son received a telephone message at Zionsville that his father was sinking rapidly rank James was taken to the hnmA of his daughter Mrs Lawrence ulwlder wife of a farmer two miles and a half north of Zionsville Janies probablv will live as he was sitting up yesterday at tiie home of his daughter but there is not the slightest hope that he will ever recover his sight a mystery tn me how this thing said James explain how wood alcohol got Into the Jug Juat as I have said to others I went to Indi anapolis riday and bought two quarts of grain alcohol from a drug store where I have often traded before 1 laid $150 on the counter and received two boltles I came back home that night and mixed it with water have been a sufferer from kidney trouble and I have been 1n the habit of putting some poplar bark into the alcohol This time I as I did not have any poplar bark handy took a cupful of the stuff Saturday right and while it didn't make mo feel bad I thought I would nearly sleep my self to death the next day It wasn't until Monday morning that I knew 1 was blind hut the doctor tells me that likely to be blind for good say you have often bought grain alcohol from the same Indianapolis drug "How often would ou buy almost every time was up to town maybe every week nr "Were your bottles labeled 'grain somehow or other I guess they this do you account for 1 just exactly PROVIDED MONEY HIMSEL you think it is strange that previously when you purchased alcohol in Indianapolis the bottles were always labeled and on this particular occasion that the druggist failed to fio telling the say in Whitestown that Wil liam Hoops gave you 75 cents tn buy alcohol that you made that statement 1 admit that 1 did tell that to some men from Whitestown that came out to see me but 1 tell them the truth Bill didn't give me a cent 1 put up all the money While making this statment James did not know that William Hoops was dead though he had been informed of the death of Robert It was during the afternoon that red Neidlinger Booher Charles Scott Ira Hull and Charles Hines business men and residents of Whites town made an automobile trip to the ulwider farm where they liad a talk with James it was then that James Is alleged to have told his callers that AVil liam Hoops had put up the money to buy the alcohol or tiie reason that fo many conflicting stories have been told as tn the purchase of the wood alcohol Whitestown people are not inclined to give much credence to them More faith is put in (he statement of a small sou of Robert Hoops who said that the wood alcohol had been mixed with the grain alcohol so that it would not cost so much ami that the mixing was done knowing ly though undoubtedly in ignorance of the direful possibilities HAS NO EAR OR CORN CROP Duroc Breeders' President Says 1u the name of the people would like to ask the gentlemen who make this kind of speeches who it is that is going to buy this power from this corporation? is not people down there that are going to do
