Moon Wheel The Register; Danville, Va. Sept. 27, 1966 3-A i Mca jcpi. I TOO Byrd Cancels Campaign Appearances Until Congress Adjourns i When it comes to downhill travel, Leroy Buck, of Ramsey, 111., is a hard man to beat. Buck invented this Moon Wheel, which is balanced gyroscope fashion while a motor pulls the large outside wheels to propel the machine.

Buck says the name has no significance and that he invented the thing just for fun. Harry F. Byrd Jr.

until Congress adjourns. Byrd, declaring he will not be "a part-time senator, announced that after a speech Monday night at Shenandoah he would cancel all campaign appearances until adjournment perhaps three weeks away. His Republican foe in the Nov. 8 election, Lawrence M. Traylor of Heathsville, reacted immediately with a telegram suggesting a face-to-face debate "either before or adter adjournment on "the real issues.

Byrds statement, which very likely means he will not resume his personal campaign until mid October, said he would rely in the meantime "on my friend and supporters. carry the brunt of the campaign. I am faced with the choice of campaigning or attending to my duties in Washington. With the heavy workload in the Sen ate, no longer can I do both. feel my primary obligation to serve ginia.

Ould Jr. told Campbell County voters Monday night they can "beat LBJ a quicker way by helping elect Republicans to Congress in November. "Tell your friends not to wait for 68 to register disapproval of the Johnson-Humphrey administration.

The time for action is now 1968 could be too late, the Lynchburg mayor said in an address prepared for a GOP rally at Brookville High School. Ould warned that the nation "is in danger drifting from one-party to one-man government, and said GOP efforts in Washington have succeeded thus far in protecting "rights that Virginians hold dear notably the states Right to Work Law. "But these Republicans cannot hold out against the challenge of the Johnson administration indefinitely, Ould said. "If more Republicans are not elected in 1966, there will be no Right to Work Law to protect in 1968. For two years, Ould said, Congress "has been so one-sided that it has failed to play its historic role as a check on the president.

We are now in danger of drifting from one-party government to one man government. Ould is opposed by Democrat William B. Spong and Conservative F. Lee Hawthorne in the congressional election. African Negro Student Removed From Ga.

Church MACON, Ga. (AP) "It's been an agonizing experience," said a Negro student from Africa who was forcibly removed from a Baptist church Sunday. Sam Jerry Oni, first Negro to attend Mercer University, said Monday in an interview: "I have been living with this nonsense of segregation in the church for the past three years. It's been an agonizing expcri-, ence, and it's been a faith-shattering experience." Oni, 25, of Ghana, said he was placed in a police car and kept there until he agreed to leave the Tattnali Square Baptist church. The student said he.

intended to continue seeking a seat in the church because "missionaries from the Southern Baptist Convention came to my land teaching the word of God, but when I attempted to practice their teaching, I was refused the opportunity in this country." After Oni's ouster, the church congregation voted to fire their pastor, assistant pastor and music director, all of whom had pressed for an open-door policy for Negroes. The vote asking for the resignation of the pastor, Dr. Thomas J. Holmes; associate pastor, the Rev. Douglas Johnson and music director Jack W.

Jones, was 259-189. The -dispute began, last June 26 when two Negroes attending a summer program at Mercer went to services at Tattnali Square, which is on the Mercer campus. Lane of Richmond-Hem ico. Godwin, speaking briefly, said he would like to "add my voice in support of Byrd and Spong and predicted an easy Democratic victory. Spong took note in a short talk primary by only 811 votes over Sen. A. Willis Robertson and promised he would stump the state for support between now and the general election.

Byrd stayed at the headquarters only a few minutes, then headed back Washington, where he said the Senate "will at take four weeks to finish the legislative backlog. In a telegram laced with sarcasm, Traylor wired Byrd: "I understand completely the decision of you and your campaign managers to stay in Washington. .1 understand the burdens of long weekend trips to the 8th, 9th and 10th Districts and the danger of statements made under the pressure of ft heavy, schedule. 'I and the people of Virginia, however, are still anxious to see and hear what you have'to say about the real issues that face us.
