Farewell Celebration to the Dummy Line.

The old dummy line running from Tern-escal to Berkeley was abandoned last night. The horse cars ceased running and the usefulness of the dummy was a thing of the past. Tbe little engine and its lone car left Dwight way in Berkeley promptly at 7 o'clock. The engineer drew open tbe tnrotue and as tbe little train moved out he pulled on the whistle cord. The tram msde no stops before reaching Temescal and tbe whistle never stopped blowing.

Residents along Telegraph aveane had gathered along tbe side of tbe street to look on the old dummy for the last time. nor over nrteen years it has been a mixed source ot -accommodation and annoyance. But a double track electric road has come to- take its place, so as the people waved their handkerchiefs in farewell to the old tram they were glad it was gone. with the whistle blowing the little tram putted into Temescal. The engineer nut on tne Drakes and camped oat of the csb.

tne nreman put oat tbe fires and went home. The old dummy line had gone into history. The slowly escaping steam iroui the open valves seemed like the last breath of a wornout steed, attain and tbe subtle electric power had contended for victory ana tne steam naa lost. The hundreds of students who have rid' an in tha nli-? Hnminv train uinia fakaf Jones first collected fares iu the little bob- tau car named oy tne ooxea-up engine in cnarge oi u.a uiiariey, toe engineer, will remember the many incidents of the ride to and from the University. The crowds ot pretty girts who used to go out to neid days or class day bops will recall tna panting tittle engine that sometimes topped sail way up tne hill near the Uni versity.

The memories clinging around the old dummy are many and varied, yet everybody seems glad it has gone. workmen began tearing up tne track today and in a very short time the electric cars will make trips every five minutes from early morning till late at night, from tbe University grounds to the foot of Broadway. How Many Wills Did Hugh Slicer Make? Which of Hugh Slicer's many wills is tbe last will and testament is still puzzling the heirs and courts. II ad 1. on Kaaton Have Located la Oak' I land. A new grocery store has been estab lished at 853 Franklin street, under the Galindo Hotel.

It is one of the most complete establishments of its kind in Oakland, for it is stocked with an endless variety of every grade of fancy and staple groceries, and what is more the stock is perfectly new. lue new establishment is conducted by Madison Keaton, gentlemen with years ot experi ence in the grocery business. For a long tune they conducted stores at Vacavilie and Elmira and the firm was the most favorably known in all Solano county, By their honest and fair dealing and by their courteous treatment of their pa- trons Madison Keaton established for themselves a reputation such as very few other grocers have been enabled to gain, The new store just opened in this city is well worth visiting, lor it has many new features heretofore unknown in the trade of Oakland. Then again, everything in the store is direct trom tbe manufactur ers and can be guaranteed by the pro prietors of tbe establishment. Hurt While Huntlag.

One man la hired by the regents Tfor the pur-Tjoee of watcbins the buildings, herding In- traders off the aronnds and keeping a sharp lookout for fixe. There are eight-large and a doxsn small buildings tor the raardian ot the toeace to watch, the aame time keeping in subjection the aeTeral buudrad acres of Bonte's domain. In order to cive' legality to the acta of the watchman, he has been made a special officer bv tbe Berkeley Board of Trustees.

The bare cower to do. however, baa not made the employment of the watchman ail it waa intended. It is an impossibility that one man should be everywhere in the Univenitv grounds at one. The niiar- ious crowd that haunts Heagerty's place lost outside the grounds every night and Indu'ee in tbe classic sport of baiting the festive white porcelain badger, must be watched. THK MCBBT TBKSHKAH.

Then there is the vandal freshman with his bucket of paint, who must be warded oft from buildings. Marauding bands of cattle that have elided the vigilance of Pound master Anderson must, be herded awsv from the manv dollars' worth of costly plants and shrubs growing around the hothouses just beneath Observatory bill. The apples and pears up in the Um- varsity orchard const be guarded, for there axe bugs and worms in those apples tbat are watched with tender interest by the Agricultural Department. Now and then a little green arsenic is dropped around, and it would not do to let a rretn man at night biie open an apple lull of arsenic, for when green meets green some- thing happens cone, per naps. i But above- all North Hall must be watched.

The 20-year-old pile is not in snred. Since the boys are forbidden to smoke within its dry, old walls there is not so much danger, but one ot Howison'a Ideas might sit down for a quiet smoke with one of Pntzker's puns or the shadof Green's (92) whiskers and a spark might settneold house on fire. It is evident, therefore, tbat one man has bis bands full if be even attempts one-ball of what is ex-- neoted of him. When a gang ot fellows 'and two friaky maidens from gan Francisco, attired only In nature's garb, ran races around the cinder track one night notions ago, the watchman was making a tour of tbe build ings on the bill. When the freshmen painted '96 all over the-, gymnasium a few evenings since they waited until Abe watchman was away on his rounds before they attempted their bold deed.
