Connally aces The request that the state pay defense trial costs is di rected to the Santa Clara Coun ty office which has indicated opposition Miss Davis has been jailed in the county's Palo Alto facilities while workmen remodeled a section of the main Santa Clara County Jail here for her Officials the new living quarters arefjust about ready for her but sheriff spokesman say it has not been determined when she will be irioved shootout The defense now says widespread publicity about the cost of the trial and security expenses will prevent a fair trial So they have asked that it be moved again Chief defense attorney How ard Moore Jr said he also has asked the court to order pay ment of expenses from public funds for Miss defense He has contended that her de fense fund is nearly depleted and expenses are running be tween $5000 and $15000 month The defense also has filed two motions attacking selection of a jury panel Moore has ex pressed concern about possible discrimination trial Jan 31 on murder kidnap ing and conspiracy charges steamming from the Aug 7 1970 shootout at the Marin County Civic Center in which four persons died But the trial has been de layed to hear the Slates Appearance In Court for Defense Arguments WASHINGTON (AP) Sec retary of the Treasury John Connally the top Democrat in aRepublican administration is facing an election year di lemma: which party to back in the 1972 presidential election This decision and the politi cal implications it holds for both President Nixon and Con nally himself figures in the re curring rumors that the secre tary may soon resign and re turn to Texas These rumors surfaced last week when Democratic Nation al Chairman Lawrence O'Brien said he would not be surprised if Connally quit be fore fall conceded he had no inside information and spokesman for the secretary termed the prediction ridicu lous or Nixon the stakes in Con decision are high: the former Texas pres ence in his Cabinet is a partial shield against Democratic at tacks on an economic program whose results remain uncer tain And it neutralizes the top Democrat in a state with 26 electoral votes or Connally the stakes may be even higher: a chance in one party or the other to getthe nomination this year for vice president and in 1976 for Connally has refused to talk selection and asking the state about his political future 2nd longtime friends say even his wife probably know what he will do and when he will do it These friends describe as false one rumored reason for a possible Connally resignation the desire to help his protege Lt Gov Ben Barnes win the Texas governorship and per haps his brother Wayne the lieutenant governorship If Barnes and Wayne Con nally win the Democrat ic nomi nations in primary fights this spring they
